Hogwarts Express (3-2006) Challenge
Based on the thrilling novel, “Murder on the Orient Express,” by the famous English authoress Agatha Christie, we have “Murder on the Hogwarts Express.” The end of Harry’s sixth year finds the students returning home to Kings Cross Station on the Hogwarts Express. Shortly after leaving Hogsmeade station, a Death Eater is found dead on the train. Since Harry Potter has the most experience with DEs, the prefects appoint him as the lead investigator in the case.

The author’s challenge is to write a story to include:

1) Harry’s investigation into who the person was, what the DE was doing on the train, and the manner of death.

2) There appears to be no adults on the train except the engineer, therefore the entire investigation is to be accomplished by students.

3) Harry can use any student on the train to assist in his investigation.

4) There shall be at least five clues and/or pieces of evidence, and at least one false lead.

5) The investigation shall be completed with all the answers by the time the train arrives at Kings Cross Station.

Rules:

1. All general submission rules apply. Huge stories over 10,000 words are discouraged but not prohibited. R-rated stories are allowed but discouraged. Judges are not required to read stories over 10,000 words or any R-rated stories.

2. All entries must be submitted under Hogwarts Express (3-2006) sub-category under SIYE Challenge and be submitted by midnight EDT, June 30, 2006. But I don’t get out of bed at midnight just to close the Challenge.

3. Multiple chapters are allowed as long as all the requirements are in the chapter(s) that are submitted by the deadline.

4. The categories for judging are Best Overall, Drama, Adventure, and Mystery.

Bonus phrases for extra creativity are the following. Using any or all of them is not required. A good, creative story will always count much stronger than any bonus.

· "Hold on, what alibi?"

· "I never said it like that!"

· "That's not evidence, that's my lunch!"

· "So how come you have these handcuffs, then?"

· "Put that magnifying glass away."

· "I really don’t know how that got there."

· "Why is the evidence bag floating like that?"

Note: This Challenge is based upon the suggestion of an author, whose name I lost when my computer crashed last year. My apologies. (But I think it was Torak.)

Hooray! This will be great! I ca't wait to get started, but most of all I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with. HeHeHe!

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.01 - 10:10AM to say:

No Humor Catagory? THUD Great Gryffindor, Spenser just fainted! No worries, I'll just wave an espresso under his nose to revive him. Well we're getting a humorous one anyway, and I have to admit that I am going to get into trouble for making this person the killer. Great concept! Eric

Professor Scroll came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.01 - 12:46PM to say:

This looks like so much fun. I can't wait to read the submissions. Good luck eveyone.

Khrys came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.01 - 04:03PM to say:

I agree wholeheartedly with Spenser Hemmingway! A humor category is needed. Away I go to work on the challenge. I am so excited. My first challenge!

lucky_black_cat came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.01 - 04:44PM to say:

I'm going to love this! *pats Torak for coming up with such a great idea*

Great concept--kudos to Topak for coming up with it!

LilyEvansPotter15 came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.01 - 06:45PM to say:

Sounds Intriguing! Hopefully I can fit this in between writing the final chapters of J'espere... And I agree, there should be a humor category!

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.01 - 07:40PM to say:

Humor? - well...not this time. Thinking more of the movie, Drama, Adventure, and Mystery are a better choice. Humor is coming up next, believe me!!!

lecook4 came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.01 - 07:42PM to say:

"I agree. A humor category is definitly called for," says Hercule Poirot as he touches up his wax mustache.

amblewat came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.01 - 08:12PM to say:

My muse is going crazy. I hope with something tangible. This is going to be so much fun!

Is the trolly lady on the train too?

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.01 - 09:33PM to say:

The Trolly Lady is definitely canon.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.01 - 09:43PM to say:

Challenge #4, August, can be Humorous.

Challenge #5, October, can be Dramatic, even Dark.

Challenge #6, December, can be Fluffy and Humorous and ”The Twins”.

DQBunny came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.02 - 04:16AM to say:

Oh, this is absolutely wonderful!!! What a fantastic challenge!

MythWeaver came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.02 - 12:54PM to say:

As a lifelong ardent Christie fan, who has read EVERY Agatha Christie mystery at least 5 times, I say there should definitely be a humor category! Any fan of Poirot knows that there is much of the absurd prevalent in Murder on the Orient Express in particular! However, I can only express my knowledgeable opinion, unforturnately I do not have the voice catalyze change. I am, however, looking forward to this challenge with great anticipation!

Sibling Creature came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.02 - 03:38PM to say:

oooh I hope there are lots of entries for this one, I'm looking forward to seeing what people come up with. :-)

Ginebra Wood came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.02 - 05:32PM to say:

I can´t wait to read all the entries! Challenges like this one make me love being a judge!

meant_2_b came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 04:30AM to say:

I'll try writing one, but believe me it's not going to be very good as I'm facing writers block with "One Last Stand" this sounds like so much fun!

Crazygal4lyf came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 08:58AM to say:

I've never posted anything I've written on this site, but this sounds like fun, off I go to write! And I also think there should be humor, even if I'm no good at it.

meant_2_b came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 09:09AM to say:

I can't find the Hogwarts express sub catagory! =(

meant_2_b came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 09:11AM to say:

I can't find the Hogwarts express sub catagory! =(

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 11:30AM to say:

meant_2_b - the category can be accessed. There is no story posted there yet so there is really nothing to see. However, in testing the submission, the sub-category, Hogwarts Express, doesn't show up to choose. I have submitted an error report: Your ticket has been successfully submitted! Ticket ID: TYSQ3EHDPB

joanoneill came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 09:05PM to say:

Sounds sooo cool! I have one question, when's it due? If this is a stupid question, sorry, I'm new.

LilyEvansPotter15 came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 09:11PM to say:

joanoneill- It's due by midnight June 30th

SilverPhoenix came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 09:16PM to say:

Yeah, um, if someone could take pity on me and answer my question, that would be awesome. Silly me, I always mix things up or read things wrong, or skip over certain parts that happen to be important. I followed all of the rules that were laid down for this challenge, wrote the entire story today, and just as I finished it I realized something was wrong--my train was pulling into Hogsmeade for the start of sixth year, not the end at Kings Cross. Hmm, do you see my dilema? I would like to know if a challenge story like this may be written Pre-HBP, for that is what I accidentally did. Normally it wouldn't be a problem and I'd just switch around the times, but unfortunately the plot has an integral part rooted around Draco and the fact that sixth year hasn't started yet. I know that the answer is probably no, it cannot and will not be accepted, but I was just wondering. I hate my stupidity sometimes. So if anyone could just answer, even if it is to tell me no, that would be great. Thanks!

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 09:36PM to say:

Joanoneill - yeah, it was kinda stupid. But, hey, everybody's allowed one or two now and then.

2. All entries must be submitted under Hogwarts Express (3-2006) sub-category under SIYE Challenge and be submitted by midnight EDT, June 30, 2006. But I don’t get out of bed at midnight just to close the Challenge.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 09:47PM to say:

SilverPhoenix - Yeah, you do have a dilemma. I know of a couple of authors who already started writing their Challenge story. Changing one of the key points in the story now would not be fair. What you can do is write a most absolute, terrific, and fantastic story, that the judges will feel your story is still better than the ones that did follow the requirements. That has happened at least once that I recall. Also, turn your train around. If nothing at all, at least have it going in the right direction.

SilverPhoenix came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 09:57PM to say:

Yeah, I just decided to enter it as an AU because I can't think of any way to mold it to fit the requirements, and I thought that it would just be more fair to the story if I entered it as I had originally written it. Thank you anyway! I suppose I might jsut write another Challenge story, one better than the last!

casually_a_weasley came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 10:16PM to say:

Just want to clarify before I start writing anything. Is Greyback considered a DE?

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.03 - 11:02PM to say:

casually_a_weasley - Fenrir Greyback: His black Death Eater's robes are "uncomfortably tight" and his hands have "long yellowish nails." His voice is raspy and bark-like (HBP26). I would say yes.

Ginebra Wood came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.04 - 05:44PM to say:

Ok wait a minute, I found a fic that is related with the challengebut is not in The Hogwarts Express challenge section. This fic counts as one of the challenge fics or not? This must help to the judges to be in their job.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.04 - 08:48PM to say:

Ginebra Wood - no, it doesn't. Read SilverPhoenix's comments above.

joanoneill came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.04 - 09:20PM to say:

Yeah, it was kinda stupid of me. I had printed the challenge, and my printer must have cut part off. thanks for answering.

Torak came out of the woodwork on 2006.06.20 - 03:09PM to say:

I should check the site more often... I've got what, eight days to write an entry? Oh, and yeah - it was me. :)
