June Silver Trinket Awards
Congratulations to all of the nominees for the June Dumbledore Silver Trinket Awards. But it is now time to name the winners.

Best Author: melindaleo

Best Overall and Drama: Harry Potter and the Nightmares of Future’s Past by Viridian

Best Romance: Harry Potter and Fate’s Debt by intromit

Best Action/Adventure: The Seventh Horcrux by melindaleo

Best Comedy: Roughing It by deenas

Best Angst: Shadow of the Serpent by KEDme

The Awards system is still a work-in-progress, and as such, it has been a learning curve for the staff. The only category that has had a different winner each month has been Best Comedy. Many of the stories that are winning are long multi-chaptered stories that, because the author updates multiple times during the month, garner a huge fan base. While these stories are well-written, exceptional stories, if the same story wins a category all year long, it will make the annual December awards rather one-sided.

SIYE feels that many wonderful shorter stories might be overlooked. Because of this, we are excited to announce that as of August you will see a new category for the awards. Best One-Shot.

There will be more changes as the year continues. If you have any suggestions, you can leave your ideas as comments or email me at professor_scroll@siye.co.uk

Congratulations, people, you're all awesome. By the way, I really like the idea of a "Best One-Shot" category. :)

Congrats to everyone!

Jim McGuffin came out of the woodwork on 2006.07.22 - 05:41PM to say:

In general, most one-shots are Comedies anyway, since it takes many chapters to develop a full-fledged fic of another genre. This probably explains the current trend.

Congrats to all the winners! : )

Congratulations to all the winners, and many thaks to all the voters! I love the idea of a Best One-Shot Category. That sounds like a great idea.

KEDme came out of the woodwork on 2006.07.22 - 11:08PM to say:

Congratulations to all of the niminees and winners. I think the idea of the best one-shot is a great idea. As for the same people winning... I think some of the same names are there but not all of the categories have had the same winners. I know I was given the award for best author last month and this month Melindaleo won it. The month before that was Intromit, I think, or Viridian (I'd have to check). This month I was nominated for and won Best Angst (the first time for both). So, technically, the winners have not been the same for every category. Maybe it just seems that way because we are seeing the same names up there. Personally, I think that if an author like Viridian, Intromit, or Melindaleo is winning every month there is a good reason. But I do think Best One-Shot will help recognize other authors who have some exceptional work out there that deserves recognition. That's just my two cents worth. But I do have a question... will this include challenge pieces? I mean, the challenges are voted on by a committee, not the readers. Maybe the readers have a different opinion than the committee. However, you may end up with the same people being recognized. I can see pros and cons both ways. Have you considered this?

KEDme came out of the woodwork on 2006.07.22 - 11:14PM to say:

Just an additional thought... you might consider a category for short multi-chaptered pieces of no more than 5-6 chapters. Or maybe stories completed within the month (i.e. Best story completed with the month of ____).

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2006.07.23 - 12:21AM to say:

KEDme you brought up an interesting point. A Challenge story is still a story and can be voted on for the Silver Trinket Awards. As for judging Challenges, they are voted on by authors and readers on SIYE, just like you. Each submits their 1st and 2nd choices for each category and I compile them. It's not a committee. Each judge is independent. I'm going to start recruiting more judges from the STA list of nominations.

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2006.07.23 - 02:50AM to say:

I personally welcome the one-shot catagory, and when Spenser recovers from his birthday binge I will explain it to him as well. It is simply my personal preference that my nominations be complete. I enter stoies as a whole, and that is what I want to be considered. My genre is humor, and it would be difficult for me to produce anything the length of Moby Dick that would continue to make the reader smile with each page. Hey, wait...I really did have one of my neighbors enjoying my entire story last month, and it was worth every bit of that nitrous-oxide that I had to purchase. We are not restricting the other, longer works...we are just putting the flashlight on the shorter ones as well. Eric B.

dramaqueen came out of the woodwork on 2006.07.23 - 04:02PM to say:

As an idea for a new catagory: Most Original. Just a thought.

Viridian came out of the woodwork on 2006.07.31 - 09:33PM to say:

I think the one-shot category is a good addition as well. I'd also like to congratulate the other winners and thank the people that helped make my day when I saw the results. (Okay, that came out a little confused, but I just updated so I'm a little loopy right now...)
