Comments moshpit came out of the woodwork on 2006.09.01 - 01:01AM to say: The new voting format is nice, thanks for all the hard work behind the scenes. Also, the nomination display in the Trophy Room is interesting, and reflects a lot of fun data. A few comments/questions: 1: in the graphical displays, can you put "Other" first, since it helps the colors line up better? Or make "Other" always a very distinct color like black or white? 2: Is the "New" column in the nominations data the new votes for this month, or something else? 3: Is the "Adjusted" column the final value, resulting from the shift in qualification dates so some votes might have been fractionally counted from last month, or something else? Thanks to everyone who nominated me, it was very generous of you. And thanks to the admins for their work. moshpit came out of the woodwork on 2006.09.01 - 01:03AM to say: Curioser and Curiouser. 1) Hitting "Back" in your browser posts a comment an additional time. Feature? 2) Why is it that the "News" comment section is processed differently from a "Reviews" comment section? News comments eat all while space like they expect HTML, whereas story comments or reviews don't. The Magic Geeks came out of the woodwork on 2006.09.01 - 01:27AM to say: @Moshpit: The graphs for the graphical displays get their colours assigned randomly, however the script generates a degree of contrast between adjacent colours. The first and last segments, however, are not explicitly set to contrast. In a pie with an odd number of segments, the first and last segment will be of a similar luminosity (dark or light). Setting 'Other' to a specific color will still result in the lack of contrast as the adjacent colours are not known before-hand (the random colour picking is used because the number of segments is variable). 'Other' can however be placed first, although, being a pie, the effect may not be that pronounced. The 'New' column is the number of users who nominated a story and have never previously nominated that story for that category. The 'Adjusted' column is an attempt at weighting first-time nominations higher than repeat nominations. The idea is basically that stories that can attract new readers get a higher weight than stories that have a constant read-base. The 'Adjusted' column, applies a 5% drop in the weight of a nomination for each previous time that user has nominated a given story for a given category. (e.g. if user U nominates story S as best romance, and has done so twice before, the weight of their nomination will be 0.95^2=0.9025 compared to user who has never nominated that story for that category before whose nomination would carry a weight of 1.0). It's the last oportunity and this story realy deserves for at least one silver trinket. cwarbeck came out of the woodwork on 2006.09.01 - 10:13AM to say: Hi. I'm very flattered that "The Five-Minute Test" was nominated again for August - thanks, whoever you are - but since it was published on July 19, I don't think it qualifies anymore. In the interest of fairness, I think it should be probably be removed from the list of nominees. Thanks again though! The Magic Geeks came out of the woodwork on 2006.09.01 - 05:07PM to say: @cwarbeck: There was a bug in the nomination system that allowed stories that were edited within the relevant time period to be eligible for the DSTA. Your story was edited on Aug 3rd, so it qualified. This bug has been resolved (Aug-30), however stories for August that gained nominations through this loophole retain them. Due to the number of nominations you received, your story's inclusion in the poll did not result in another story being left out. I have removed your story from the poll as well as the votes for your story (but left the nominations) and have contacted those who voted for it to let them know they may cast another vote for that category. Thank you for letting us know about this. Stories get the most attention when they are on the Recently Updated list, so that your story made the ballot when not on that list is definately a tribute to your literary prowess, while informing us of this error, that was in your favour, is a testimony to your character. lecook4 came out of the woodwork on 2006.09.01 - 09:47PM to say: I really love the Trophy Room addition where you can see the different stats. You guys keep improving things in ways that are so cool. Thanks again for all that you do to make this site so unique. melindaleo came out of the woodwork on 2006.09.05 - 09:52AM to say: Thanks so very much for the nominations. I really appreciate them, and they give such a boost to continue with the story. Best of luck to all the nominees, and thanks to SIYE for finding such a nice way to inspire its authors.
