February Dumbledore Silver Trinket Awards Poll - Reopened
It is that time of month again; the time where we raise our esteemed authors upon a pedestal.
The nominations are in and it is up to you, the users of SIYE, to decide which stories are of a caliber that demand recognition.

Voting is open to registered users only. Please take the time to vote for your favourites.

The poll will be open until March 7th.

VOTE HERE

Due to technical difficulties, the DSTA poll has been reset. Due to significant differences between the intended ballot and generated one, all votes cast before Mar 1, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. EST have been cleared. If you voted on the previous ballot please recast your vote.

Regarding the differences seen in the Trophy Room, they are correct, the score now equals the number of nominations received. All adjustments have been removed. One nomination contributes one point to the score, in all cases.

The problems regarding Best Author, both in the Trophy Room and on the ballot, have been fixed.

Congratulations to all the nominees and best of luck. Nomination results for February can be viewed in the Trophy Room.

Thank you for your support and understanding in this matter. Please don't forget to nominate your favourite stories for March.

Um. Maybe I'm slightly brain-dead because I have been studying for the past couple hours, but is it me, or is there a problem with the Best Author catagory? All I see is the one line stating that it's the Best Author etc etc, then it immediatly scrolls down to the Best One-Shot. No options to vote. Glitch in the system, or am I imagining things again? Haha. Anyways, there's a great variety of stories this month (and there's going to be some stiff competition). Good luck to everyone!! -alex

Dragnew came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.01 - 03:25AM to say:

I can't see best author either. Is this a problem or is it meant to be like that this month for some unknown (to us mere mortals) reason?

carolquin came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.01 - 06:49AM to say:

there is no best author selection.....

lecook4 came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.01 - 07:57AM to say:

Guess what, there's no... Oh I guess you read that already. :-)

longhorn came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.01 - 09:39AM to say:

yeah, man, add my vote to this as well. there's still no best author...

fake a smile came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.01 - 09:52AM to say:

I also noticed the issue with the Best Author voting, but I noticed another issue as well. In the Trophy Room, the Score column is merely repeating the total number of nominations a story/author received rather than giving out the number that you actually use to score the stories. I am also curious what ever happened to the debate we had a couple months back about your new scoring system. As far as I can tell, nothing has changed. If you did change anything, I don't recall it ever being pointed out and the change was so insignificant that I failed to notice. I don't mean to start a big controversy or anything; I'm just wondering what, if anything, came of that. Thanks. -Matt

lecook4 came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.01 - 11:05AM to say:

Glad to see you fixed the Best Author. As far as fake a smile's comment, I think it was but not sure myself. I really am unclear on the whole math process anyway. It didn't make sense to me before and it still doesn't, but that's probably more me than it. :-)

well that my votes cast for another month & it was good to see taking control back in the running plus having echos & normacly being to get more reconition as well it just a shame you can only vote once in each catogory.

Marauder Evans came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.01 - 01:39PM to say:

Well, good luck to everyone! Especially fake a smile, who had me desperately voting for ages just to win one catagory, lol. =) May the best story/author win!

I just want to say thank you to everyone who nominated my story After the Fall and also my one-shot entry in the challenge Daddy Tell Me A Story First. It has been a thrill just to have the feedback, but to be nominated is a great feeling. Thank you all for your vote of confidence. I don't have to win, because your comments have already given me my reward. - Le

I just wanted to say good luck to all those in the polls. I would like to send a big shout out to all of those authors who were nominated but didn't get enough nominations to make the polls. I really admire the fact that you are all willing to put it out there each month. Keep up the good work... all of you. On a more personal note, I'm absolutely thrilled to see my two favorite stories in all of fanfic fandom back in the running this month. Good luck fake a smile for Taking Control and intromit for Harry Potter and Fate's Debt.

Cordova came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.02 - 10:11AM to say:

Firstly, congratulations to all nominated authors. Secondly, might I make a small suggestion, even though perhaps this is not the proper venue… I notice that on the Featured Story section of the Home Page, all the featured stories are past winners of something or other. Would this section not be better served to present stories/authors that would be considered worthwhile reading, who do not have the readership or popularity because they’ve not built up a following, etc. Worthwhile being a subjective and relative term of course. Or perhaps something like the Staff Recommends or perhaps even a Member Recommended section. The DSTA Trophy Room and the Categories section already feature these stories in some form or another. This is by no means an innovative idea, just stop off at your local B and N and you’ll see a Staff Recommends section. Personally I would never read anything that a certain popular talk show host – who’s name rhymes with Okra – recommends, but that’s just a personal pet peeve of mine. Sorry now I’m editorializing and going off on a tangent. While the DSTA is a wonderful way to honor a certain few authors who deserve the accolades for their literary achievements, there are quite a few Engine That Could stories out there worth our time and effort who might not otherwise see the light of day. Thank you for your attention and please forgive my presenting this suggestion on this particular forum. Again, congratulations to the Nominees and best of luck. Happy Writing.

Bloodflower came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.03 - 03:53AM to say:

Cordova: This has been much talked about, I think. Or at least I hope it's been much talked about (*glares*). I would guess the problem is that the staff would have a hard time seeming unbiased in such a situation. And I would also guess that the "Staff Recommendations" at B&N aren't really staff recommendations. Or at least not staff in the plural. It would seem that impartiality -- or just the appearance of impartiality? I don't know -- is of some import to the staff of SIYE. While personally I would be very much in favour of such a feature, in which stories that are not necessarily the most popular are chosen based on the merits of the writing/plot/et cetera, it is realistically a difficult thing to manage. As for a Member Recommended section, that rather seems like the Trinkets. To me, at least. Perhaps you mean an individualised thing, in which each author makes story recommendations. I don't think the current build of SIYE would work well with that. But there is this mysterious Phoenix project in the wings.... I believe a staff-selected Recommended Stories section existed before the Trinkets, but between the Challenges and Trinkets, there just doesn't seem to be much room for anything else. Pity. *Glares in an obvious manner* Get to it.

AdminQ came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.03 - 02:08PM to say:

Blood & Cordiva: I see no reason why Phoenix cant have a rec a fic section where users and feature stories they liked, and others can read what fans suggest. In fact, I like this idea, it will happen. Count on it ... -AdminQ

fake a smile came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.03 - 08:17PM to say:

I'm afraid I'm a bit confused on how such a user recommended story section would work. What users would get to pick what goes up there? And isn't that part of what the favorite story/author features are for? Not only do the favorites allow us to show our appreciation to the authors of those stories, but they allow other users of the site to see the stories we like and would recommend. I'm not saying it's a bad idea; I'm just wondering about the feasibility of such a thing.

AdminQ came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.03 - 10:25PM to say:

I see it like the DSTA method. People can click a link and vote for the story to be apart of the rec list. Every story is an option, and there can be separate categories, etc. Every user can pick what goes up there no limits on this what so ever. This would be just another section of the site, a little more variety. Right now the featureed story author box is mostly DSTA winners, and why those are great reads there are litterly hundreds if not thousands that are just as good and should be read too. If there was a rec section they might have a better shot of picking up readerships. Just my 2cents

Cordova came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.04 - 12:57AM to say:

Bloodflower, AdminQ, Fake a Smile…My desire is to see a section that would recommend a story that would not otherwise be featured. How that would come about is where things can get a bit complicated in that I would like to avoid the repetition of a popularity contest. The DSTA’s do a wonderful job in singling out authors and stories of exceptional value, but as with any contest it can be contingent on popularity rather than content. And that is fine and has its place. I vote the DSTA’s because I enjoy being a part of that process and to show my support for author’s and their stories. But that is not what is in question here, that forum already exists. Perhaps a staff or author recommended section would better showcase stories that would not otherwise garner attention from readers. Again taking a page from the booksellers, have the SIYE staff or members or authors feature Up and Coming Authors, or stories of Notable Mention, or the Staff Recommends, One-Shot Gems or even an A Rookie of the Month take your pick or all of the above. It just seems redundant to have a Featured Section that features DSTA and Challenge winners. I do not in anyway see it as a conflict of interests for the staff to highlight a story or it’s author. We’ve almost 3,000 stores, 1,000 plus authors and almost 8,000 members, it’s easy for good stories to get lost. SIYE is by far my favorite HP Fanfiction site for a variety of reasons. The way the site is set up, it’s easy to navigate and I personally believe the majority of the authors and members are erudite, generous and kind in their reviews and responses. So I leave the why’s, wherefores and how’s to the Staff, I’m sure you can come up with a section that could best showcase a Featured Section. Thanks again for your attention.

A Rookie of the [time period here] has been suggested before. Why it did not fly? Who knows. But we still haven't seen those End-of-Year awards. Maybe "Rookie of the Year" is in the wings as well?

Rookie of the year? I like it. There have been lots of good comments in this section. All should be looked at and thought about.
