Tech Update
Hello,

I had a few moments away from work, so I wanted to jot down a quick note. This is a bit of an update to the Tech department.

  • Yes, I am aware there are several, lots and lots, massive, and often high volumes of email being sent from the site in relation to story notices and updates.
  • Those of you who have sent me the emails, and were polite, and even sorry it happened, I thank you and assure you myself and Chris are working as fast and as often as we can on the site code to fix it.
  • Those who were rude, demanded it be fixed this very instant, or did nothing but complain, well you can kiss.. ah never mind, if you cant say nothing nice and all that jazz, it isnt like it was done intentionally or that the coders said, 'Hey wont this be fun..'
  • Phoenix is working, we will release the new site as soon as we can. Real life took over, that happens from time to time. I will tell you this much about Phoenix, SIYE will never be the same, in fact the new site is completely recoded by hand. (Thank Chris and his sleepless nights spent on coding it for you, you have no idea how much he loves this site, if there were ever a fan award, he gets it hands down. I count my lucky stars that he is on the Tech staff coding away.)
  • [edit] Another note: The stack and stories that are not posted, will be soon. Please keep in mind we do not have several admins to approve stories, and they all work as fast, as hard, and as long as they can. We will approve those stories ASAP. It just takes time. Some days will always be faster than others. I know it can be a royal pain, but it just can't be helped sometimes. So please stop flaming me about it :-)

There you have it a quick note. We are working as fast and as hard as we can and soon the glitch will go away. Instead of killing alerts altogether, they are left on so even if you get up-teen-zillion of them you still get them. :-)

Best,

Steve

[Edit] I have narrowed down the problem with both the broken submissions, and the broken emails. They are related. Please note the emails will be sent as I attempt to fix this. Some stories will post before the older ones in the stack, it is me doing it so please send all complaints and blames to me :-)

[Edit2] I have fixed the submissions problem. There is a catch. I had to disable the alerts, both fav author and fav story. The alerts were locking the story submissions, either this is due to the sheer volume of people who would get the emails, or it was the size of the story. I don't know yet. Expect alerts to remain offline until I have the time to seriously look at them. I'm sorry for the disappointing resolution, but its the best I can do in one evening. -Steve

[Edit3] Email notifications have been tentatively re-enabled. We are testing a method that will hopefully allow for validation to continue undisturbed, while also allowing email notification to resume. Over the next few days we will be monitoring the emails sent and will suspend the notifications if any problems arise. Thank you for your understanding during this transition. - Chris

If I'm really, really rude, do you promise I can kiss your ar... uh, sorry - it's just been such a long time since I had the pleasure of squeezing, much less kissing anyone's ... well you know what.. hehe.

lecook4 came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.07 - 09:43PM to say:

Sorry, I've been celebrating tonight and fear I've had too many fire whiskey's. Feel free to delete comments if deemed too inappropriate. - :-0

Not in a million years! those made me smile, and after getting 700+ bounced emails in my email box because of the site code, I needed that. Plus the 'hate' mail that was a riot, I should have kept them. but they were on my PDA, and sadly they are no more.

lecook4 came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.07 - 09:50PM to say:

Yeah, I know the feeling, I've just inherited a crackberry at work. Now they can reach me anywhere, in bed, in the bath... BUT at least I haven't had 700 emails yet. LOL!

AdminQ came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.07 - 10:13PM to say:

Yea, it killed my PDA. I had to remove the memory cards and and reset it to factory defaults to recover, and remove the offending email accounts form the POP list.

werekitten came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.07 - 10:37PM to say:

Yay, thank you so much! Good luck. I at least can wait a few days to get my updates, so don't stress too much...

lecook4 came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.07 - 10:46PM to say:

Thanks Werekitten. We really are trying to validate, contrary to some posted comments, but there really is a glitch and Steve is working on it. It's nice to see there are some of you with a little patience. All of the staff have been emailing each other trying to get the stories out of the queue, but we're all in the same boat until Steve can work his magic. Thanks.

Jessmentor came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.07 - 11:13PM to say:

I was ondering why I was getting Echoes of Power email updates at a rate of 20 a day. I hope ya'll can get this fixed soon, because it is driving me nuts! Bloody hell!

AdminQ is the Wizard among those who aspire such a title. I rarely see a 'thank you' for him and his staff, but boy do we profit by what comes out of his departmant. Eric B.

Thanks Chris- I love this site as well and appreciate your hard work and the rest of the staff!!

Thanks, Steve, Chris. And Lynn, you really ought to feel free to drink more firewhiskey. Quite entertaining, to say the very least. Really excellent job, though, Steve, Chris. I'm by no means knowledgeable in the world of tech, but I can imagine how difficult it is to fix everything. And Phoenix..... ;)

QwayMelqnu came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.08 - 02:13AM to say:

I have a hard enough time taking care of my little network here at home. I can only imagine the pain caused by managing a website. People just need to realize that things can go wrong every once in a while. - Keep up the good work! And I'm looking forward to Phoenix!

Chreechree came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.08 - 03:50AM to say:

I felt horribly guilty sending an email as I was sure it couldn't be an isolated incident and the staff had to be hearing about it from everyone. That's why I went out of my way to not be nasty (how would that help?) and also convey my gratitude for all of the staff's hard work. Let me say it publicly here as well: all that you do is appreciated. I hope the notice and subsequent fixes will help people relax while everything else is hammered out.

Mojomig came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.08 - 05:26AM to say:

I would like to echo others comments and say ,Steve et al, you do a great job. Patience is a virtue which I am happily prepared to exhibit while you build us a new world to play in.

Dave, you just gave me the worst flashback to high school English. Hang in there, Steve. The vast majority of us worship the ground you code on.

Bloodflower came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.08 - 06:08PM to say:

Ah, faux-Latin, how I adore you.... I agree with Dave.

I would also like to pass on my thanks to the admin crew. I had been wondering about the sites habit of sending multiple notifications for a while... hadn't quite worked up the motivation to query it with Steve though... then again, up until now I've never received this many of them... the sheer scale of issue at the end there was amazing. :-) that said... I've been getting doubles of most notifications for some time... more of some.. notable for only 1 notification though was the recent 30000 word chapter from fakeasmile's Taking Control, so I doubt the problem relates to sheer chapter length... :-)

amblewat came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.09 - 08:20AM to say:

You guys are awesome. I could never do what you do. Great job. We know stuff happens and are all professonal here.

sideline came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.09 - 12:01PM to say:

I'm not trying to be a pain, but in case it helps you guys I've received a double notice for _kb_'s unvalidated story and a triple notice for Sun Devil's validated story.

Mojomig came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.09 - 03:08PM to say:

Many thanks again to all the team. I tried to be patient and its paid off, both my submissions are up! BTW, I've stopped getting any emails, rather than multiples!

duckster came out of the woodwork on 2007.03.09 - 05:00PM to say:

To echo Sideline's comment, I also received three notices for SunDevil05 and I'm up to twelve for _kb_ (latest 4:45 EST, story still not validated)

The story Rogue by _kb_ is a testing story it will be unvalidated, and revalidated at will by myself and staff, I am sorry for the emails and confusion, but I wanted to leave a note.
