Muggle Field Trip (2-2007) Challenge
Hogwarts’ Muggle Studies instructor has proposed a field trip to any Muggle town/city/location in order to observe and interact with non-Magics and their world for a weekend. Knowing that they have grown up in Muggle households, the professor approaches certain students to assist in this, including Harry. Satisfied that adequate security measures have been put in place, a thrilled Arthur Weasley strongly encourages his children to join in as well.

Although leery at first, Harry decides that he would love to show his friends (especially Ginny) more of the world in which he lived before coming to the school. The problems arise when no one anticipates how seriously isolated from Muggle life most of the students have been. These are compounded when certain non-Magics become suspicious of the visitors and their own seemingly strange ways.

The author’s challenge is to write a story to include:

1. A Muggle capital city of any European country, except England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland, that they will visit which will seem wonderful to them, if somewhat mundane to us. There are officially 41 European countries left to choose from.

2. The field trip will include an overnight stay in a Muggle hotel.

3. Describe at least three Muggle situations that they will encounter, will have trouble understanding, but may come to enjoy.

4. Describe at least three Muggle objects/structures/individuals, the purpose of which will be misinterpreted by teacher and students alike.

5. Tell about a close call with a suspicious Muggle or Muggles, and then how Harry and Ginny are able to defuse the situation (perhaps turning it to their advantage).

6. A special romantic moment between Harry and Ginny that occurs specifically because of their interaction with the Muggle world.

7. A unique lesson that a student or students realize they have learned from their experience.

Rules:

1. All general submission rules apply. Huge stories over 10,000 words are discouraged but not prohibited. R-rated stories are allowed but discouraged. Judges are not required to read stories over 10,000 words or any R-rated stories.

2. All entries must be submitted under Muggle Field Trip (2-2007) sub-category under SIYE Challenge and be submitted by midnight DST, Monday, April 30, 2007.

3. Multiple chapters are allowed as long as all the requirements are in the chapter(s) that are submitted by the deadline.

4. The categories for judging are Best Overall, Romance, Adventure, Humor

Bonus phrases for extra creativity are the following. Using any or all of them is not required. A good, creative story will always count much stronger than any bonus.

· “You really might not want to touch that if you value your…”
· “What is the worst that could happen if…”
· “There is no such thing as…”
· “You have got to be kidding me mate.”
· “I have got to get me one of those!”
· “You [blank] just like a Muggle.”
· “[famous Muggle name]? I’m sorry, I’ve never heard of him/her.”

PS: This Challenge is from the creative mind of one of our own staff, Spenser, after drinking a lot of his own home-brewed, Burundian Kowtow coffee. (It doesn’t look like coffee and it doesn’t smell like coffee) But he has been challenged. (Monopoly?)

PSHH. I read it at 12:20 when you originally posted it. Why did you take it down for a couple minutes, btw? lol. I suppose I'll rewrite my original comment. The Challenge this month is really great. So many ideas can come from this topic. Good luck to the authors entering!

There was a minor format problem and I "lost" the ability to edit it as posted. So I deleted it, corrected my draft, and reposted it. Sorry for confusing you.

I love this challenge idea!!! Eric....I can't wait to read what Spenser and the gang will be doing!!

I am certainly going to post a story to the Challenge, and I may include something about that ridiculous Monopoly tournament as well. Unfortunately, since I came up with the idea (which Sir Ollivander greatly improved upon), I don't believe that I should be competing. If a few people though spit their coffee out while laughing at something in my submission (no, not over the keyboard), then that's great in itself. Eric B.

Can't wait to read what comes out of this challenge. Looking forward to some good stories.

I'm so gonna enter this challenge. My first ever, I hope I will actually finish it, which is my usual problem. I already have all kinds of ideas bubbling up. And you better prepare yourself Amsterdam, you have some British wizard and witches coming your way. Good luck to everyone who attempts to write a story for the challenge!

Great challenge! I may enter.. after all, spring break = time to write fan fiction! Either way, I can't wait to read the entries! I wonder how many will be in Paris...

Sounds good! I hope to see Harry, Ginny, Ron and Hermione in Spain! we are ready for them! my country in April is wonderful!

melindaleo came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.02 - 08:45AM to say:

Oh, what a great idea! This sounds very fun, and I look forward to seeing different authors' interpretations of this one.

GinnyMarie came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.02 - 04:56PM to say:

sounds...interesting...LOL i might just enter...i dunno...depends on if i can write a story to go with all of that...hmmm...lol...can you just imagine Draco in a muggle city? and im thinking Prague...or Paris...we shall see!

GinnyMarie came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.02 - 05:14PM to say:

question...are we allowed to have them there longer than a weekend?

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.02 - 05:58PM to say:

Ginny Marie) - "for a weekend." and "The field trip will include an overnight stay in a Muggle hotel." So I would have to say no. *But if their travel arrangements get screwed up.....*

GinnyMarie came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.02 - 07:00PM to say:

Hmm...travel arrangments...getting messed up...due to war perhaps? this'll be fun!

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.03 - 12:43AM to say:

I'm almost afraid to post a comment since SIYE is running with my idea. Then there is that little thing about Jim Carey's Lego statue, the Monopoly Tournament, and the upcoming bell-hop's strike in Grand Feniwick (you didn't hear that from me). I did want to take a half-hour (I'm a slow typist) to remind you that Challenges do produce some incredible tales. They also are a wonderful learning experience. I would not still be writing if it were not for what I have learned, both from these competitions and from the input of those who have read and judged them. Besides which, they are so much fun, that I almost ignore the reviewing gnomes sleeping on my sofa. Eric B.

I'm hoping that the Admin feud will not affect the participation in this Challenge.... lol

QwayMelqnu came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.03 - 11:22AM to say:

I dunno. It won't be much of a challenge if some random Admin puts up a bestiality story that automatically wins best overall, lol.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.03 - 05:09PM to say:

QwayMelqnu - the Challenges are mine and mine alone. There is no coding or programming involved. All Challenge votes are tallied on a spreadsheet and posted by me. No other person is involved nor know of the results until I post them.
That doesn't mean my posts of winners can't be edited. That has already been done and admitted to during this April 1st fiasco.

QwayMelqnu came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.03 - 05:51PM to say:

lol, I was only foolin'. After a while of me hangin around y'all will see that I'm rarely serious about anything.

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.03 - 05:58PM to say:

Everyone-- Tom is correct and honest about his own strict control of the Challenges. Everything will be sorted out to the Peanut Gallery's satisfaction very soon. Please trust me with this…please (Eric, not Spenser). The purpose of all Challenges is to develop writing abilities with a suddenly suggested situation and a seemingly narrow set of conditions. Within the space of a month, you will find yourself creating a story, and perhaps learning a great deal from it as well. Do not be afraid of a few divergent personalities. This is your chance to shine with a submission, and I will tell you first-hand that people really read what we provide for these competitions. We are fan fiction writers, not Slytherins. If you allow this small setback to slow or stop you with your writing, then the wrong people win. Please drive on! Eric B.

werekitten came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.03 - 06:10PM to say:

Oh! So we can't have it be for longer than a weekend? Um.. I hate to be picky, but... the Challenge says "For a weekend," so can I interpret that as a longer amount of time that includes a weekend? And an overnight stay just has to be at least one, right? *grins hopefully* Because my story has a "culminating activity" on the trip that takes an entire day, and wouldn't work after just one day....

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.03 - 06:41PM to say:

werekitten-- I believe that an overnight stay in this context means that they are sleeping in hotels as opposed to returning to Hogwarts from a daytrip. It is just a weekend, and restricting it to a just a weekend serves a few purposes. It will give a tighter plot scene for the writer. I am sure that the intention is to influence the possibilities, make it a bit more uniform between entries, and ensure Ron returns the video rentals on time. Maybe part of the real challenge is to have it your own way, while still adhering to the rules. I just wrote a chapter in my latest where Harry and Ginny spend a week away in another world, while only seconds pass here. Just a few thoughts. Eric B.

GinnyMarie came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.03 - 06:54PM to say:

Spense, I just might be running with that idea of yours...only it might be a bit different! mwhahahahahaha!

werekitten came out of the woodwork on 2007.04.03 - 07:25PM to say:

All right -- that makes sense. Would it be ok to do a Friday evening, Saturday, Sunday trip?
