Spoilers about Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
If you haven’t heard by now, let me tell you. The seventh and last Harry Potter book by J.K. Rowlings, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” will be released for sale at midnight, morning of July 21. I’m sure by the end of the weekend, not only will every SIYE member have their own copy, but most of …er…us, will have completed reading it.

With this latest book comes a new category on SIYE for posting stories, Post-DH. This category is for all stories written after the release of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.” However, not everybody will be able to get their hands on a copy and finish reading it within the next few days. I already know the sign-up list at my local library has over 38 names on it. We don’t want to ruin anybody’s anticipation from hearing how the book ends before they have a chance to read the story for themselves.

Therefore, SIYE will not post any Post-DH stories until August 1, 2007. Stories in the validation stack will remain there until that date. Any stories that do make it past the validation stack and onto SIYE in any way will be immediately deleted, no warnings given or questions asked. Also included are any comments, reviews, author’s notes, or any other avenue on SIYE that leaves any SPOILERS. This goes for EVERYBODY. We want every reader to be able to enjoy the 7th story on their own without being told the ending or any other parts of the story in advance. So, spoilers will not be tolerated. After the 1st of August, we’ll let the gates open and we can talk all about it. I hope to see some really good stories to come out based on this latest and last book.

Torak came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.21 - 05:39AM to say:

Well, the downloaded version I found is genuine - the first chapter matched the one in JKR's reading. Anyway, so Snape gets a piano dropped on him, Voldemort flees to his secret lair inside a volcano (where he's prepared a super-secret death ray to destroy the world), and Ginny decides to abandon the magical world (because of Harry) and becomes president of France. What, you don't believe me? :-p (Oh, all right. Within the staff we've been amusing ourselves by making up increasingly ridiculous fake spoilers. And seriously, nobody could believe those, could they?)

Just finished reading mine. I'll leave off my impressions for later, but I will say this: It's very hard to believe it's over. Almost so much so that it seems nearly anticlimactic.

Fortunately, my fanfic-plot creating mind can see many, many opportunities for some interesting stories to be written by the whole community here at SIYE and the HP fanfic world in general.

The Harry Potter universe will have to live on through the fans, but because of the wonderful people that write and read for this site and many other's, that's not a bad thing at all.

I hope you all enjoy the book as much as I did. And I hope you'll all stick around when it's over. - Qway

Marquis Potter came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.21 - 08:53PM to say:

I was worried when i saw the epilogue in the list of chapters but thankfully it was vague enough that fanfiction will have something to write about.

Exile250 came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.21 - 09:03PM to say:

Overall i have mixed feelings about the book. Like Marquis said it was vague enough to keep fanfiction alive. I don't really like what happened with some characters, but that is what fanfiction is for.

RyokoTenchi came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.21 - 09:06PM to say:

true the epilogue does create many post-Hogartws possibilities but i will always love playing in the realm of hogwarts as young adults. after school should not matter much in my opinion. and as for Dumbledore. Well people who know me know how much i am gloating at the moment^^

iluvginny came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.21 - 09:49PM to say:

well that was a great book maybe my favorite i cant wait for the post-DH books to come out though!!

Drakir came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.21 - 10:02PM to say:

I'm under the impression that JKR will only -possibly- be writing a HP Encyclopedia now that the series is done, ILG. Then again, she -did- say that she would outright rule out the possibility of future HP novels, though it -is- unlikely...

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.21 - 11:09PM to say:

Over the last couple of years I have written one or two...stories (including three book-lengths). I seem to now be the victim of my own work. Having created a seperate universe for my boy Spenser, it is about to strike back at me. I've joked that Harry's wonderful biographer had altered some facts to appease the Muggle readers in her books, and pressed forward with my own version. It is in many ways too different from the now-canon. I've produced some things of which I am very proud, and I hope that people have enjoyed them...maybe smiled once or twice. I started writing because I was angry with J.K. Rowling (Harry's break-up with Ginny). She has redeemed herself. I still have a little bit of mischief left in me, but maybe the fat lady is warming up to sing. Eric B.

werekitten came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.21 - 11:22PM to say:

Aww, I think my earlier comment got deleted as being too spoiler-ish. Sorry 'bout htat. Anyways. Overall, I was very pleased with the book. It will keep fan fiction going for quite a while -- I already started a Post-DH. Couldn't resist. XD. I think it's a shame that Ginny-- *pulls self away from keyboard* I am trying very hard not to do anything spoiler-like. Right. The book was good. That's a safe comment. I loved reading a part, then thinking, "Wow, that's a lot like what I read in ******'s fic!" But I'm so sad that it's all over... :(

I am prying the book aways from my sisters dead hands...Jk....She would never give that book up. Even in death. I was unlucky to fall asleep (from lack of from reading) and she took the book a few hours ago. She won't give it back and she's gloating! Too bad when you wave a piece of wood and say "Stupefy", it doen't work quite as well as when Harry does it. Still....I want that book back!

DQBunny came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 01:21AM to say:

Werekitten: Hehehe, I've started a post-DH story as well. One random reference gave me a really good idea, and I'm hoping not too many people jump on the bandwagon right away! Spenser: You don't have to give up on your own universe since the last book is out now. I definitely understand how you feel, especially since I love to stick to canon as much as possible. But if you enjoy the characters and the universe that you created for them, definitely stick with them!

sapphire200182 came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 03:04AM to say:

Torak - Yeah I left out the end tag, but look who's talking: sapphire: Next time you use bold tags, please remember to close them... ;-) I'm not the only one to miss end tags =D

On DH...things in the Wizarding World got too dark too fast to believe fully, the writing sucked and I've read fanfic authors (Jeconais, Melindaleo, Kerichi) who are damn well better than JKR.

QwayMelqnu came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 03:33AM to say:

If you look closely, I was the one who put the end tag at the beginning of my comment to switch it back. I dunno why someone else didn't just do it before me :P

On a side note. I was looking at the categories and I was thinking that Post-DH and Post-Hogwarts sound pretty much the same. But I can't figure out what else to call them without making it a whole sentence, lol...yeah, okay, I'm tired, I'll go to bed. :)

Torak came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 06:18AM to say:

Amusingly, I put an end tag in as well - so it seems there were two unclosed bold tags.

Marquis Potter came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 07:11AM to say:

I don't think JKR rushed into the darkness too fast because i got a sense of it coming in HBP.

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 08:55AM to say:

I just finished reading (fell asleep before I could finish last night due to exhaustion) and I guess the best word for my reaction is.. satisfied. Not thrilled (though I was thrilled with some parts ) but, overall, satisfied. Which, considering some of the apprehensions I had (a few of which did come true ) is a good thing. However, after the "satisfied" reaction did come some degree of sadness and a sense of loss. And not just because off what happens with some characters and events in DH, but because of some uncertainty, at the moment , of how this will affect the fandom. I can relate to how Ravenclaw and sapphire are feeling. Thank goodness for the SITE archives and others. I'm also a big shipper for another couple outside the quartet ( in the name of non-spoilers I won't say who, but you might be able to guess ) so you can imagine how I'm feeling about that today. Which is why I'm on here sharing with the SIYE community. Spenser, please keep writing in your own universe. Given how the HP series has ended and my own particular interests, I suspect that the fanfic that I'll enjoy most wil mainly be those that pretty much ignore DH. There'll no doubt be some exceptions to this. After all, despite the epilogue, there's still a whole lot of information we don't know about the Quartet and a whole lot of other people who would be interacting with them. Despite the length of the book. I find myself yearning for more detail, particularly regarding Harry and Ginny, but on other non-relationship things as well. And I really would have liked it to be longer. A thought I'm sure would make the publishers and possibly JKR cringe. :-) I guess the fanfics and forums ( which up to now I haven't done much on ) will have to fill in the blanks . Considering the many times while I was reading DH that I mentally went "Oh, so and so (insert a fanfic writer's name) will like, or has done that ) I look forward to what we fans will come up with.

QwayMelqnu came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 09:36AM to say:

There's a whole 19 years to fill in, so there's plenty of material to work with. And don't forget the wonderful world of AU, which is what my next large fic will probably be.

On a side note. Whoever has the job of writing the screenplays for HBP and DH has their work cut out for them, lol.

Anniepaulie came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 11:36AM to say:

Finally finished reading...the book is great, but it does give you that 19 years gap to fill in. The time between the flaw in the plan to the epilogue jumps too fast, without clearing up many doubts...and I guess I'll have to wait for fan fiction to clear my doubts

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 01:28PM to say:

Old Fart - you caught that, too?! I had to re-read that to truly understand a time gap. Some proof-reader goofed.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 01:30PM to say:

So, to add my two-knuts in, I have just finished reading the book. What a wild roller-coaster ride. It's gotta be a four-hour movie to tell this tale on the big screen.

RyokoTenchi came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 01:32PM to say:

if it isn;t it is just not worth going.

hjp74 came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 01:37PM to say:

i agree with sir olivander its should be peter jackson as he seams to get book to moive translations as in this one there is hardly anything that you can cut from the book that wouldn`t lessen the movie 7 what time gap altough iam going to star my re read tonigh.

DQBunny came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 02:39PM to say:

Really, I'd love to see the BBC take on Harry Potter and do it as a series of mini-series. They do have the budget for good special effects - look at the new Doctor Who - and they would give the books the appropriate lengths they deserve.

jek519 came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 10:58PM to say:

finished that book in 7 hours. I must agree with harryluvsginny in saying that Molly's line may be the greatest thing in literary history. I have one issue with the book, but im not going to say it in case it spoils it for someone still reading. But pm if you want so i can whine about it =]

MG and NerdLee came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.22 - 11:00PM to say:

I couldn't stop laughing when she did that. I mean, what would you have done? Shes so protective of her kids. I absolutly loved the book, it hasn't really hit me that its over, but sadly it will come crashing soon =(. I really love almost everything about the book. JKR is amazing, and I hope she will continue to write; even if its not HP. She is way too good of an author to stop here. She has a wonderful imagination and could probably come up with something equally as enthralling as HP.

Ravenclaw came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 01:38AM to say:

Can someone PM the time line mess up to me? I didn't catch it and I am very curious.

RyokoTenchi came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 07:59AM to say:

same here i seem to have missed it as well. shame on me

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 11:02AM to say:

I've catagorized all my stories as being Alternative Universe now. I've written too much in Spenser's world, and come to love too many of the original characters I invented to just abandon it all. I had a lot of fun bringing Mr. and Mrs. Weasley to Disneyland in my latest. I will make a couple of minor changes once we don't have to worry about spoilers, but I'm going to be diverging from canon henceforth (to a point). I'll see what the response is. Also, I've already been contacted about whether one story actually is a spoiler despite being almost a year old. Eric B.

Old Fart came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 12:03PM to say:

I was wrong about the error I found. Sorry.

whimsy came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 01:57PM to say:

I know that JKR has already stated that there will be no more Harry Potter books, a decision I support. But does that mean that there won't be anymore books set in the Potterverse? I'd love to see a book about the founding of Hogwarts.

HGB4L came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 02:12PM to say:

There were so many times when I was reading when I thought that it reminded me of a fan fic. I would be like 'WOW I think I've read this before' Then I would think I hope someone inserts a one-shot fan fic here because that would be so cool. I say congrats to any fan fic writer that predicted something in DH. I'm off to read DH for the second time ;)

MG and NerdLee came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 02:24PM to say:

this is such a good book and is my fav then i think it would hasve to go the the order of the phexiox because even thow this book is the last it says so much and answers alot of questions but left me with alot and that might say jk rowling is thinming of writtinga reuion piece i cant say why i tink that cuz i dont now how to put it with out spiolers so ya and i just find it great then it would go to half bloods prince soory i changed my mind becasue in half blood prince he finally gets told bby dumbuldore how to defeat voldermort and tahts by killing the horcruxes tehn it gose to the order of the pheniox becasue in that bok you find out why voldermort has chosen to go after harry you find out why harry is the one who has to defeat hiom it answerds everything you were yurning to now!

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 05:31PM to say:

As to whether or not there would be any more stories set in the Potterverse. I read an interview with JKR a few days before launch day ( I'll search through my bookmarks and see if I can find the revelant one ) where she was asked the question," Does this mean that we will never see anything more of the students and staff of Hogwarts...Wizardry/" Her reply was, "It's a very big world and there is room for other stories." She then went on to say that she wasn't going to say no and she was obviously not going to say yes. This could mean anything from a HP encyclopedia ( which would include the unpublished stuff from her immense files of background material ) or the "author's cut edition" of the earlier books both being projects she has mentioned in past interviews. It could possibly be another charity book or many other things. Jo stated in a very recent interview that one of the things she's most looking forward to is sharing Harry's story with her younger children ( now 2 and 4 years old) as they grow old enough for them. Who knows...maybe a few years down the road her children might start clamouring for more. And considering how important family is to Jo, and after having a few years free from the heavy pressure that she has been under, she just might agree. In the meantime, we've got lots of wonderful fanfics (glad you're rethinking your stand Spenser) to keep uo going.

Professor Scroll came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 09:16PM to say:

I agree. The plot bunnies are whizzing around right now. I'm in the middle of my second reading. I loved the fact that she went back to her descriptive style instead of the disjointed way she wrote HBP, which was my least favorite book. Molly has always been one of my favorite characters and she out did herself in this one. Best one liner in the book. I just hope that whoever they find to write the screenplay will keep the integrity of the book in place. Torak, why don't you write one and submit it for consideration?

gryffindor_girl101 came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 09:35PM to say:

gryffindor_girl101 came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.23 - 09:36PM to say:

It was so funny when me and my sister were reading the parts about Aberforth. When we were planning our fic (Sons of Dumbledore) we thought about how we would make Aberforth's personality. It was so cool when we read the book and found out he was just like how we were going to portray him in our fic.

Ravenclaw came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.24 - 11:02AM to say:

I'm feeling a bit better about it now, but I still have so many unanswered questions!

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.24 - 12:32PM to say:

I'm beginning to wonder if the large numbers of unanswered questions and the sort of incomplete feel of the epilogue from DH might just be something of a gift from JKR to the fandom. After all, she said at the time she announced the completion of the book that the fans who enjoyed the forums should not fret because there was still going to be lots of things to discuss and that could include the fanfic ( which I'm sure she's aware of but probably can't discuss because of legal reasons ). Given the good attitude she seems to have towards the fans (as exemplified by her own website with it's Wombat Exams and her fansite awards), I wouldn't really be surprised if it was indeed deliberate. From some of the comments I've seen, there certainly seem to be a lot of plot buuny alarms now going off.

Ravenclaw came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.24 - 06:43PM to say:

The questions I have aren't all from DH (though some are). They are things that she refused to answer previously because she thought they would have given away too much of the plot, but really turned out to have nothing to do with it. I am glad that there is still room to work in the fandom, Rather than the epilogue being incomplete, I felt that the ending of the actual story was lacking a couple pages.

Ravenclaw came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.24 - 06:46PM to say:

*** ^ Dirty rogue commas. * o_o

griffindorechicky101 came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.24 - 10:55PM to say:

ranvenclaw: i t o have question to be answered thats wat i was meaning on there being one other book just telling me the answers you now!?

HeatherWeasley_lover came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 05:16AM to say:

The book is freaking awesome.... Wow... all I can say is just... wow... She went out with a bang. Not that I'm really surprised or anything... I mean honestly... it's JK.

wolfsgurl came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 10:47AM to say:

i thought that the book was ABSOLUTLY wonderful.... but does anyone agree with me that the epilouge....... really didn't say as much as it could and should have?!? i want to know more! arrgggggg!

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 10:54AM to say:

Well, it looks like we may indeed get some more answers because JKR is indeed going to do a HP encyclopedia. It was announced as part of the "Today Show" (USA) interview preview. It might be a while before it comes out as she's going to take a break for a while after all the pressure. It will include more info and back stories on the existing characters (she mentions Dean specifically ) but also more about what happens to people and the wizarding world after DH.More Potter to look forward to!

sapphire200182 came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 11:28AM to say:

Oh come on. Do we really need more Potter-geek facts? Better to leave it as it is and let us fanfictioneers make it up ourselves. Quite frankly I feel we do a better job sometimes than JK.

What kind of an insipid ending was that last line anyway?

Drakir came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 02:48PM to say:

I think the epilogue was supposed to be that vague, wolfsgurl. It leaves...oh...everything up to the reader's imagination.

griffindorechicky101 came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 03:07PM to say:

you guys are all thinking what me and my older siter are the epilugue ws horrible and we wanna no morea nd what is that chessy line telling us

melindaleo came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 03:30PM to say:

I'm beyond happy. I got everything I wanted and more. Not only does Harry get to live happily - in the nail-biting pre-release days, that was all I dared hope - but he also gets our girl. I've nothing to complain about.. JKR came through in spades.

MG and NerdLee came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 04:20PM to say:

I liked the vagueness. It gives us something to think about and write about. She couldn't just go and tell us every little detail of Harry's life now could she? I support her epilogue. I like how I got to use my imagination at the end, not just her's.

MG and NerdLee came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 05:39PM to say:

I liked the vagueness. It gives us something to think about and write about. She couldn't just go and tell us every little detail of Harry's life now could she? I support her epilogue. I like how I got to use my imagination at the end, not just her's.

Ravenclaw came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 06:12PM to say:

I liked, and disliked it. It was vague, yes, but it did what it was supposed to. I wouldn't say that anything JKR has done was horrible. I am quite honestly sick of people saying things like that. They are her books and came from her creative genius. We wouldn't have a fandom to play with at all if it wasn't for her. More information would have been nice to have for sure. A couple more loose ends tied up would have been nice, yes. I'm sure she could have told us more, but it was her prerogative to leave it at what she did.

That being said, I am totally squeeing about the encyclopedia! Woohoo!

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.25 - 07:01PM to say:

Hey melinda, when I was reading DH and came across a certain line that was said to Harry late in the book ( I don't want to do any spoilers but I'm sure you know which line I mean), I had a little mental comment go through the back of my mind along the lines of "Ooh, melindaleo will like that one." BTW, for those in North America, the JKR interview will be in 2 parts on Thurs and Fri. on the "Today Show" (NBC) which runs from 7 am to 10 am EDT. I'm not sure exactly when during the program but could be between 8 am and 9:30 am which is when they usually put on their *important* items. Most of it will be repeated on "Dateline" on Sun. night--Check your local listings ;-)

trouble came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.26 - 07:44AM to say:

The epilogue was awful and a large part of the book read like fanfiction- I hated the book's last line. But apart from that, I did love DH overall and I think JKR went out with more of a bang than a whimper.

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.26 - 08:45AM to say:

Interestingly enough, during the first part of the JKR interview this morning, she mentioned that orignally she planned to have a more detailed epilogue. She didn't say why she didn't in the final version. Jo also said that , "It would be humanly impossible to answer all the questions. There are some fans (said with a chuckle) who won't be happy until they know the middle names of Harry's great-grandparents." when asked if she found that intimidating, her reply was, "No, I love it' ...that the fans care that much (the last bit is my paraphrase of a hard for me to hear bit.) The portion of the interview this morning was shorter than I expected. However, the whole 1 hour "Dateline" program (NBC Sun. 7pm EDT) is devoted to HP and includes the interview.

melindaleo came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.26 - 09:53AM to say:

Hey Miri - I know exactly which line you mean - and I can't even begin to describe how thrilled I was. In her interview, JKR also gave us some more tidbits - including the careers of the trio.

sapphire200182 came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.27 - 05:24AM to say:

So what were their careers? Let me guess...

HP = Quidditch Star (PLEASE!)

GW = err...nurse?

RW = Own business, prob selling sports merchandise...!

HG = SPEW activist, lol!

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.27 - 07:25AM to say:

sapphire: I'm still trying to be careful about Spoilers so if you want really want to know, you can either check mugglenet.com for the links to the news articles or PM me and I'll let you know. Mugglenet also has got a link to the "US Today" interview which also has some information.

Ravenclaw came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.27 - 11:53AM to say:

There is a story on The Today Show about it. She mentioned what the trio do, but not Ginny. The artical is called: Finished ‘Potter’? Rowling tells what happens next. I was very excited when a friend linked it to me! Answered a couple of my questions for sure!

GW_Dreamer came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.27 - 10:05PM to say:

mmmmm just finished mine last night, i agree with many of you about the epilogue!!

ReneeGinSoftie came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.31 - 06:53PM to say:

i finished the book the sunday after it was released

Drakir came out of the woodwork on 2007.07.31 - 10:01PM to say:

I found JK's lack of an answer as to Ginny's future job somewhat disappointing. If she is what I think she is, I'm even more disappointed. I guess we'll see with the Encyclopedia she'd talking about doing.

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.01 - 05:23AM to say:

Drakir, check out mugglenet.com for their transcript of the Live Chat Jo did on Mon. morning (EDT) . It contains a *lot* of info including Ginny's future job which I, personally, was very happy about. The chat was supposed to run 60 min and actually went 90 min. There were a lot of questions answered but as there were over 120,000 submitted, obviously there are a lot more to be answered. Jo said that some of the unanswered ones might be dealt with on her website in future.
