Soccer Devil22 came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.08 - 12:12AM to say:

This has nothing to do with the DSTA, but I think is equally (if not more) important. As of right now, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince(movie) is set to release on Firday; November 21, 2008. 15 months and counting! Remember, you heard it here and from me first! At this time, I have no further information besides the fact that Dan, Emma, and Rupert are all coming back (but we already knew this) as well as Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy). I'll post more intel as soon as I get it. Man! I'm already siked! OotP had some killer special effects, I can't wait to see HBP! ~Jeff~

ShadeXH came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.08 - 04:02AM to say:

So it's Sovran, fake a smile, and cwarbeck for the winners again this time? I mean, sure, great authors. But it's getting a tad repetitive.

hjp74 came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.08 - 03:25PM to say:

well done to the three winners the very fact that the same authors are winng awards each month (not always for the same award + the fact there are other good stores out there that dont seam to get a look in EOP & grey maiden spring to mind) is smething that should be appluded because this is a public vote & to keep the level of intrest high eneugh to archive that sort of constancy just shows how good fan fiction at its best can be. For startes MOO iright now has some of the best charecter development in it particully Molly Arther & Mcgonagall, The right time is probably cwarbeck best work so far & after the very dark tone of Dh it no suprise to see such a lfuunt romatic fic picking up awards & Tking control is probably how meny of us would have liked harrys & ginny rlationship to develop in book 6 so yes its nice to have variaty in the winners but t the same time its har to fault the winner just because they happen to be exeptionll story teller (it a bit lkie complaning the harry potter dominates the book charts when it relesed though of course that no longer a problem & iam sure in time other stories will rise up & take there place in winning DSTA as in a way iam sure Those stories are accting as inspiration for the authors of the site to constantly tri & improve there work james

AnitaB came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.08 - 07:18PM to say:

While it's good they (Sovran, cwarbeck, fake a smile) win, which proves what great authors they are, it's kind of discouraging for the other authors to try to compete when it's obvious they (the other authors) have no chance to win. There should be something like an 'Out of Contest' figure so new authors and new stories can be rewarded without discrediting the always-winners

werekitten came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.08 - 08:55PM to say:

I agree with Anita. We had this discussion a couple months ago, and it's still relavant. The idea for a "Hall of Fame" came up, which I realy liked. You may even consider starting a separate contest for stories that have won more than, say, 4 or 5 DSTAs. Authors like fake a smile, Sovran, and cwarbek are amazing, and deserve to be recognised... but so do others. Newer authors who's storied are also amazing, if not as widely read (for ex, like hjp7 said, Grey Maiden, etc), will never get the recognition they deserve, because people won't ever hear about their stories. If you're a new reader on SIYE, and the first thing you see on the sight is the DSTA awards announcements, you're going to go read those stories, right? And when next month comes around, you'll vote for them, because it's some of the best stuff you've read. There really needs to be a way to recognise new authors. It's a case of "one is silver and the other gold".

QwayMelqnu came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.08 - 09:53PM to say:

Being fairly new to this author thing myself, winning a DSTA hasn't been tops on my priority list. -- True, it's extremely cool when I get that nomination message. But after being a part of SIYE for a few months now, I realize that there are a few heavy hitters out there that always consistently release quality chapters one right after the other. -- There's no reason they shouldn't be recognized for their chapter-by-chapter work.

On the other hand, I do believe that there should be some sort of a limit, or a Hall of Fame like werekitten mentioned. I mean if you've got more than 2 or 3 DSTA's on one story there's no doubt that you're the bomb diggity. Anything more than that would make the cake fall over due to the excessive amount of icing, lol.

Anyway. Congrats to all of those that won, I've read all their stories and they're all more than deserving. - Qway

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.09 - 01:37AM to say:

I never thought of it as something to 'compete' in as it's esentially a popularity contest over which the author has no control. I have however never voted for a DSTA. Not exactly sure why...but maybe it's just that lots of peole, like me perhaps, don't actually vote becasue they wonder if it will be worth anything. I don't vote in TV reality shows either cos I think it won't make a difference maybe that's why I don't here? Maybe I should lol. I was flabbergasted when my story got it's first nomination but treated it as a bit of a laugh really - after all you can't tell I should be awarded best author for example, based on two chapters! I took the vote more as a comment that "I like your style/story." I guess I am asking if other people take it more seriously than I do, or if I have missed the significance? Not that it isn't cool to see trinket notifications in your message space! It lets the author know your story is appreciated - I don't think I need to actually win one I'm happy enough knowing how many people appreciate it through nominations, reviews and PMs.

lecook4 came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.09 - 04:57AM to say:

Congrats to all the winners. Sorry for any typos but I just got back from the emergency roomm and am feeling a little zonnked. Can't sleep so here I am. I'm also typing this one handed and am not doing a very good job of it.

I just want to say it is always a great feeling to be acknowledged by your readers, but I've never won for my main story and don't really care. ?For one, I'm on staff and think I probably shouln't be nominated because of that, but I also have enough readers who genuinly like my tory and that's what makes me happy. Those who are nominated and do win, should be proud and we should give them their due. They respectfully and rightfully earned it. Two thumbs up for C, F & S.

lecook4 came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.09 - 09:50AM to say:

WOW! Was I on drugs when I wrrote that or what? Five hours later I'm a little clearer. Not exactly what I meant to say, but most importantly I wanted to give those who won their congrats.

hayellbayell came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.09 - 01:13PM to say:

soccer devil22: no. it's common knowledge for anybody that pays attention.

JadeSeraph came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.09 - 10:35PM to say:

While I love the idea of DSTAs and I wouldn't mind winning one, as an author I pay much more attention to the reviews I get because they're not based on other people's work. Every time I get a nomination in my inbox, I smile and feel appreciated, but it's nothing compared to a review that was written by someone who enjoyed the story. I don't see writing fanfiction as a contest against other writers - I see it a way to entertain both myself (while I'm writing) and others (while they're reading my work), and as long as that happens, I'm happy. Also, as I mentioned, reviews are about your story, and not how it compares to other stories. A review has no chance of being biased by the work of others, so if you write well and people enjoy your story, you'll know it. With the DSTAs, it's very hard to win an award and get your story(-ies) recognized.

Of course, that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to have that ribbon next to my story title. =)

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.10 - 12:56AM to say:

I mjust admit I tend to get sucked into a story based on the fact it has a lot of reviews, not the ribbon. I know if I think a story was mediocre or even downright terrible I am not going to say so unless I have something constructive about it's composition to say. If it's just terrible or boring due to a bad plot or simplistic writing i simply don't bother. So I value reviews not only for my own work but as a reccomendation to read. I then look out for more from that author. It's not failsafe...sometimes people like and review stories I think are pretty so-so.

Victor Aagaard came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.10 - 05:35PM to say:

Congratulations, all of you!!

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.10 - 11:15PM to say:

I can understand that sometimes it's difficult for a new author to get a look in to the DSTAs. But wasn't there a discussion a while ago about adding a category for new authors just like the one-shot category was added last Oct.? I know that I try to take both parts of the voting process seriously. I have in the past nominated a story that had plot points I wasn't fond of but was such a well written story that I thought it deserved to be nominated. Also when it comes to the actual vote, if there is a nominated story that I'm not familiar with, I'll read it before voting. Not being a writer myself ( I wish! ) I don't know if the option to remove from consideration stories that have multiple wins is fair or not. I will say that, having been partially involved with a fannish vote for quality print fanfic for over 20 years, on the whole, quality work will come to the forefront even if it takes some time. In the meantime, congratulations to all the nominees and the winners.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2007.08.11 - 08:19AM to say:

I LOVE IT! A Challenge story won a DSTA, for Best One-Shot. Way to go Sovran.
