Reconstruction (5-2007) Challenge
After the final battle, all the celebrations and memorial funerals, the acting Minister of Magic makes the rebuilding of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry a top priority. But with all the spells, charms, wards, and other forms of magic put on the old castle over the ages, the reconstruction becomes very difficult. So the lead construction engineer asked Harry Potter if he would use his powerful Elder Wand to attempt to override or cancel some of the magic that was previously used on the building. Harry reluctantly agrees.

The author’s challenge is to write a story to include:

1. How Harry determines what some of the magic was that was used on the castle, good or bad.
2. Describe three processes that Harry and the builders overcome to rebuild three parts of the castle.
3. A very tricky maneuver Harry does that involves both his wands.
4. The temporary headmistress confides in Harry that every master builder who works on Hogwarts traditionally adds a personal touch by building something unique or covert into the castle. So Harry does too.
5. Describe a feature that the students’ request built.

Rules:

1. All general submission rules apply. Huge stories over 10,000 words are discouraged but not prohibited. R-rated stories are allowed but discouraged. Judges are not required to read stories over 10,000 words or any R-rated stories.
2. All entries must be submitted under Reconstruction (5-2007) sub-category under SIYE Challenge and be submitted by midnight DST, Wednesday, October 31, 2007.
3. Multiple chapters are allowed as long as all the requirements are in the chapter(s) that are submitted by the deadline.
4. The categories for judging are Best Overall, Creative Building, Adventure, and Humor.

Bonus phrases for extra creativity are the following. Using any or all of them is not required. A good, creative story will always count much stronger than any bonus.

· “If I can do it, then…”
· “I wouldn’t stand there if I was you.”
· “It looked easy the first time.”
· “How do you know that block…”
· “Keep it up and I might need a longer break.”
· “And he huffed and he puffed and he…”

Merlin's pants, this IS a difficult one. Requirement Number Five does look promising, however... Hmm...

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 09:37AM to say:

sapphire200182 - just think of it as Lego blocks. Some colors and shapes don't go with others.

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 09:55AM to say:

Oooh...this one sounds intriguing. Makes me wish I was writer. I love home and garden renovation shows LOL! Good luck to all our terrific writers.

Torak came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 09:56AM to say:

Um... but Harry stashed the Elder Wand back with Dumbles. He doesn't have it any more... never mind, that gave me an idea.

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 10:35AM to say:

Lovely! After all these years of my making fun of Spenser being so dangerous around power tools and construction projects he will have his revenge on me. Actually, I've incorporated quite a bit of a building theme into my stories. Harry in fact owns a very nice Binford 5000 steam-powered miter saw and a laser-guided jackhammer with the optional telescoping site and detachable espresso maker. Yes my friends; power, ar, ar, ar! As for the Challenge...hmm. Rome wasn't built in a day, but I wonder...? It sounds like fun. Great idea Sir Ollivander! Eric B.

Sibling Creature came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 01:28PM to say:

if a feature is requested by students but not actually built (for whatever reason) will that still satisfy item #5?

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 03:59PM to say:

Sibling Creature - yes, it will. No indoor Hockey rinks on the tenth floor.

goingbacktosquareone came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 04:44PM to say:

Tenth floor? Wow, that's quite an addition Harry's making to Hogwarts...

SiriusBlack1113 came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 07:34PM to say:

ooooh...What a great challenge! I have an interesting idea for this.

Miri came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 07:55PM to say:

Oh, Oh...Spenser's getting ideas involving power tools. Quick everyone ...hide! LOL! Truly Spenser, I look forward to what you and everyone else who attempts this challenge comes up with in their stories.

Gusty_Ginny came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 08:56PM to say:

Intersting. You said that each student working on the building adds their own personal touch, would it be okay for two people to team up and make one? Hypothetically, say if Luna and her dad wanted to team up and make a room to catch Crumple Horned Snorkacks or something, would that be allowed?

melkior came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 09:52PM to say:

I like the idea of the challenge. And I could use a rest from all the meddling.

Miss Radcliffe came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 10:45PM to say:

What a cool challenge! I find this sort of challenge much harder than, say, more romantic ones, but after all, it is a challenge. I'll see if I can come up with anything. Good luck to all entrants! Miss Radcliffe~

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.01 - 11:41PM to say:

Gusty_Ginny - I think you read that wrong. Each master builder adds his own personal touch, not every student. The students make a request.

HarryGinnyMustLiveOn came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.02 - 01:32AM to say:

Great! I've been looking forward to this. Now I have an excuse to stay up late typing ;) Now I have to start brain storming. Great idea Sir Ollivander.

sapphire200182 came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.02 - 04:38AM to say:

Sir Ollivander - Yeah, 'cept these 'Lego blocks' make a spectacular boom if, say, you combine a Reductor Curse with an Engorgement Charm...

Spenser - That reminds me. Vernon Dursley works for a construction company, right? I'm sure it said that in Book One...

Alanius came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.02 - 07:17AM to say:

Vernon Dursley works for Grunnings, a company that makes drills.

Cool challenge. I'll see what I can do to enter ...

LilyLady came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.02 - 08:34AM to say:

Hmmm...this sounds interesting...don't think I'd be able to meet all your requirements though...I think it sounds a bit TOO ooc for Harry to actually agree. Can't wait to see what everyone else does though, I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this challenge!

quinn came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.02 - 08:44AM to say:

I can't believe it, no romance category in a construction story? I mean seriously, the most popular construction show on TV is Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, and I think we could agree that it's 98.7% fluff. Of course, if this story winds up looking like one of my nephew's vidoes of bulldozers pushing stuff around for hours, I just might concede your point! Good challenge, I'm really excited to see what crops up!

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.02 - 09:12AM to say:

quinn - most popular? I didn't know they watch "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" in Ulaanbaatar. They don't even get the DIY channel on state TV. But they do have bulldozers.

quinn came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.02 - 09:35AM to say:

Sir Ollivander - Come on, Ty's huge in Ulaanbaatar. They even sneak in old Trading Spaces" episodes. It used to be Bibles. OK, fine, you win:)

amblewat came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.02 - 06:29PM to say:

I love the challenge hope i can write something. Been in a slump lately

Zen came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.03 - 05:23AM to say:

This is indeed is an interesting challenge. I've already written out one chapter, but I have to run it with my beta first. I still don't know what special feature Harry would add...hmm...*goes into thinking stance*

goingbacktosquareone came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.04 - 10:05PM to say:

I've had my face scrunched up in the "thinking grimace" for two days now...I've figured out the perfect personal addition and the students' request, now I'm just buggered for a story to write around it...I don't think it would do to have Harry hand Kreacher the Elder Wand and sneak off to the Room of Requirement to ravish Ginny...LOL. That would hardly be fair now, would it?

red haired mom came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.05 - 08:38PM to say:

I have never posted a story here, but I have read a few. I really like this Challenge, and I wanted to know if there was anything special I need to do before entering it? I have posted stories on another site, so I am familiar with the fanfiction world, I am merely asking for specifics on this sites posting regulations. Thanks, RHM

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.05 - 10:00PM to say:

Hi red haired mom, posting a Challenge story is pretty simple. They follow the same rules as any other story. We have some submission rules which you will find under the HELP link. For a Challenge story, I already set up the theme of the story and certain requirements you must try to follow. It can be a bedtime story, a group of friends talking over dinner, Harry describing his latest injury, or day-to-day activity of the events. That’s where your creativity comes in. Just about anything goes. If you have time, you may want to look further down our NEWS and read a previous Challenge, and then read a few stories that were submitted for it. It may give you an idea or two. I will be adding a few idea hints on the 10th and 20th. But I wouldn’t wait too long. Good luck.

Torak came out of the woodwork on 2007.10.10 - 04:32AM to say:

Turned out not to be such a tricky challenge after all - at least after I... um, approached it from a different angle. To my shock - SHOCK, I tell you! - it became a very silly little fic.
Wow, I've never written one of those before... ;-)
