The Trinkets Situation
You might have noticed that the March Trinkets Poll is missing. Due to several reasons, we were forced to remove the poll and disable voting. Several members noticed that the ballots for certain categories don't match the actual nominations in the Trophy Room. Furthermore, the Best Author category was missing completely.

Due to all these circumstances it was our decision not to have any polls, instead of having faulty ballots. We apologize to all our members, especially to the authors.

The issues are being addressed, but bear in mind that the Trinkets system is a long and complicated part of the site. The adaptation will take some time, but we will do our best to have everything up and running as soon as possible.

Again, our apologies to everyone.

I think it was for the best. don't worry, it's a completely understandable decision. For the best of the Trinkets, we can wait, I guess.

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 06:36AM to say:

Thank you. Will we still be able to continue nominating this month for April's DSTAs?

MyGinevra came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 07:03AM to say:

Good decision, Dino and everyone else on the staff. I appreciate the hard work you all do.

lilyevans_Jan30 came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 07:14AM to say:

Thanks for working on the situation. I am new here, so this may be a question that has been debated and addressed in the past, but is there a reason for showing the running voting percentages while the poll is open? Doing that can have the unintended result of skewing the results of the voting, especially later in the week. (ie, someone not bothering to vote for their favorite because they think it is too low in the poll to have a chance, or a reader who has not read most of the stories in a category automatically picking the one that looks like it is going to win, or for that matter, tying to "buck up" a close second". If this has been discussed in the past and decided, I apologize. We have a similar problem here in the U.S. during presidential elections with East Coast states calling their winner while polls are still open in the west. voters can be very influenced by their perception of who is winning or is going to win. But overall, I know all of you in Admin and Tech do an amazing job. This site is so well run and efficient, it makes posting here a lot of fun. So thanks!

harmoine came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 07:38AM to say:

Thank you for taking the time to rectify the situation and I still think that as part of fixing this is that you should bring in a set number of times that a person/author can win a catergory. Reason for doing this is that it gives everyone a fair go and chance at winning and besides it gets boring if the same person wins the same thing over and over again and month after month.

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 08:04AM to say:

lilyevens_Jan30 - you can't see the running percentages until after you vote. I guess unless someone tells you it is doing badly/well you wouldn't know. I've noticed the winner is usually pretty clear with the first half of the week though *shrugs* I'm not sure if that is becasue it is open or not.

I personally don't see how restricting teh number of times a person can win is giving everyone a fair go. Doesn't it disadvantage those who are banned from winning more awards? Do we do that to Academy award winners? Do we do it to literary awards? "No, sorry. You already won, no more for you." It doesn't matter how many times someone brings this up I never can quite see how people think this approach is *fair*. As a popularity contest it should be a popular vote - as soon as you restrict eligibility further than timing it's not going to be a true reflection of popularity is it?

melkior came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 08:55AM to say:

Nominations have also been disabled as they currently don't serve any purpose.

hgfan1111 came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 09:27AM to say:

Thanks for working on the issue. I agree that there shouldn't be a restriction on the number of times an author can win--some authors out there put amazing work into their stories and deserve the recognition. I do wonder about seeing the percentages, as lilyevans_Jan30 pointed out. It does seem that the last section of the week is a bit of a loss as the numbers get skewed sometimes. Another thing I've wondered about is a 'Newcomer' category. I'm fairly new to posting, so I'm not sure if it's ever been brought up before. But it might be nice to see a category for authors who are posting for the first time. It's quite the daunting task to overcome some of these mammoth stories. Sometimes that little bit of recognition may just give an author the encouragement they need to keep going. **shrugs** Maybe the execution of the idea is just too much to work out. How would the nominations work...etc, Thanks for the chance to say something.

Victor Aagaard came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 12:14PM to say:

I support you in your decision! (Although I feel a bit sorry for the would-be March winners.)

lilyevans_Jan30 came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 12:40PM to say:

Kezz - you are right - I kept thinking that everyone could see the running totals. I also agree that we shouldn't restrict how many times a person should win, but I do think a "Newcomer" category would be great. It doesn't even have to be tied to first posts, but could be for stories that are either less than, let's say, five months old from their first chapter, or shorter than a certain number of words (i.e, 30,000 or less). That way, any new story from any author would have a chance, but newer stories without a big following would not have to compete against the "tried and true", so to speak. Just a thought. -lilyevans_Jan30

Victor Aagaard came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 04:17PM to say:

lilyevans_Jan30 - I absolutely LOVE your idea for a "Newcomer" category! That's the smartest thing anybody's had to say about the 'restriction' topic. (No offence to all the other people who have said stuff about it... I'm just saying.)

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 05:00PM to say:

It is a good idea indeed. I like it! Pity my mythical vote is just that ... mythical :P

TGIF came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 05:43PM to say:

Aagaard, I believe hgfan1111 came up with the "newcomer" category, its just sa few posts above. But I do agree that its a really interesting idea and would give more exposure to new authors. Lets face it, Many readers vote for favourite authors based on reputation as well as their current stories. That can be a daunting task to try and compete with. Not that it doesn't make any wins less valid or worthy. It reminds me of certain award ceremonies that have a "Best Young Actor/Actress" awards. I also support winning multiple times. There are certain stories out there (finished and WIPs) that are amazing, but very lengthy. Such hard work for writing a continually amazing story should be rewarded. And if anything (if authors are a competitive sort) it serves as further encouragement for the author to continue with such a massive undertaking. As a reader I see these DSTAs as way of thanking the writers who took such time and care to write these for us. I'm sorry to see that this wasn't able to happen the "normal" way. Hopefully it'll work itself out! You're doing the best you can with the situation at hand!!

lilyevans_Jan30 came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 05:54PM to say:

Yes, hgfan1111 was the first to mention a "newcomer" category here - thanks Andi! I am not sure if she envisioned it only for new authors or new stories, but envisioned it for new stories primarily so that all authors have an equal chance. One thing I have noticed is that some of the lengthy stories tend to get nominated in every category every month, even when the author only submitted a single chapter for the month that doesn't necessarily fit all the categories, for example, a story that starts out angsty but only has a single, romantic or fluffy chapter in a particular month, may still be nominated for angst. I don't have a problem with this trend per se, because it reflects that new readers may be seeing the entire story for the first time, but at the same time, I like the idea of separating out newer or shorter stories somehow, even if we have to lump all of them (humor, angst, romance, etc.) into a single "newcomer" category. Just a thought. Of course, not being the one who would have to put this into practice, I can't say how hard it would be.

Victor Aagaard came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 07:44PM to say:

...I feel more than slightly embarrassed. Shoulda read all the way down. REDACTION TIME! hgfan1111 - I absolutely LOVE your idea for a "Newcomer" category! That's the smartest thing anybody's had to say about the 'restriction' topic. My bad.

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 07:57PM to say:

*pats Victor Aagaard* Never mind, the Minxes understand ...

TGIF came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.05 - 11:19PM to say:

Hmmm. Lily, you bring up a good point. It'd be tough to seperate because of how the votings been set up. Perhaps the only way it'd work would be to have authors put different categories for their story PER CHAPTER and readers could only nominated stories for DSTAs in the categories the chapters are listed as. Now I don't know how complicated that would make this process but its a thought. I'm sure others are much more creative.

hgfan1111 came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.06 - 01:59PM to say:

He He. It's fine. While I did post the idea here, lilyevans_jan30 and I have been talking about it for a few weeks. And, as Kezzabear said, the Minxes don't mind sharing credit. ;)

MyGinevra came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.06 - 05:01PM to say:

Kezzabear, there ARE restrictions on the Academy Awards. I don't know if they are relevant here, but you can't be nominated for best score two years in a row if elements from the first year are repeated the next year. That's why the LOTR and HP scores were not nominated in 2002; they had both been nominated in 2001. Of course actors, directors, etc., can be nominated two years in a row, but those would be for different films. I think that SIYE could do something like have a rule that a multi-chapter story could not be nominated in the same category two months in a row if it won the first month. If the author of a very populat story wanted to wait a month to submit another chapter, that would be his/her decision. If that rule were in effect, The Hog's Head, for example, could not have been nominated in Romacne for the March awards, but could be nominated in, say, Drama. Then in April it could be nominated for Romance again. A rule like that would restrict slightly the rights of a popular "dynasty," and would open up the awards slightly for other stories. Just a suggestion.

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.07 - 01:43AM to say:

I wasn't meaning the 'in a row' concept when I had my thought. (I didn't know about it actually I feel all enlightened now) What I meant was that you can have a movie win more than one Oscar and that an actor/director/whoever can win more than one Academy award. So I am uncomfrotable with the idea that a story be banned from winning another DSTA once it gets one.

Adding a subsequent award rule like you suggest My Ginevra, would make sense.

AnitaB came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.07 - 11:36AM to say:

I think it was for the best. don't worry, it's a completely understandable decision. For the best of the Trinkets, we can wait, I guess.

kaypgirl came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.07 - 03:27PM to say:

But what about the stories that were completed last month? Those can't be nominated again. Dang glitches.

Victor Aagaard came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.07 - 09:40PM to say:

That is also an excellent idea. I like smart people!

Fics by Fumph came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.16 - 03:39PM to say:

I did wonder why my fic hadn't shown up in the voting, despite being nominated, but figured that you had to receive a certain amount of nominations (and that might be the case regardless of the S.N.A.F.U.). Good call on taking it down.

Zapatorf came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.19 - 09:00AM to say:

The newcomer category IS a good idea, and so is the subsequent voting thing, but I think that something that could also really be used is only being nominated for one (or two) categories at a time, and an author feedback-type thing, which would, for example, let the author choose which two categories to be in if nominated for more than one. I think that the whole problem is that, yes, as Kezz said, this is a popularity contest. However, I don't think that's what they are really meant for. I think that, rather than the number of people that read a certain fic (which, by the way, seems to go up the more chapters there are), this contest is meant to find fics that are a good read, and if we give the same fics the award every time, then there are a lot of good fics that don't get notice. Okay, and before I finish my rant, I would like to remind you that this is my viewpoint on the issue.

iiradned came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.23 - 03:54AM to say:

Any updates on fixing the trinkets? The ideas for new categories can be hashed out later.

melkior came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.23 - 01:23PM to say:

The trinkets are on hold for the time being.

Zapatorf came out of the woodwork on 2008.04.28 - 02:53PM to say:

So, does this mean no April trinkets either? *edited* Well, maybe they'll be ready next month. On a side note: for the next trinkets, can we nominate a fic that would, under other circumstances, be only available this or last month? You know, to make up for the 2 month problem?

PhantomPhoenix came out of the woodwork on 2008.07.09 - 08:19PM to say:

Whew! Ok, I've been gone for like the past few months, and I was on the site, and I was looking for the awards, I was starting to get alarmed because I couldn't find it. Well, now I'm just depressed that it's not around anymore. I understand why they're not up anymore, but I still miss them. ;'( Hope they get brought back soon.
