Potter’s Affairs Challenge (2008-4) Closed
Today is September 1, 2008, celebrating Labor Day in the United States. It is also the day for the judges to start judging the Potter’s Affairs Challenge (2008-4) as the Challenge is now closed. We have nine candidate stories, eight that are completed, for the awards of Best Overall, Drama, Adulthood, and Galleons Wisely Spent.

The authors went in all directions. Some concentrated on Harry and Ginny getting back together. Others worked on sharing all those Galleons Harry was awarded for ending the war. What career he will have after school or the home he decides to live in wasn’t too prominent in most stories. I was looking forward to finding that hidden passageway. Oh, poo.

Well, once the judges are satisfied with their nominations and submit them by Sept. 14, the winners will be posted on Monday, Sept. 15. May the best storywriters win!

"Very short story"... hmm... you have me intrigued, Sir Ollivander!

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.01 - 10:04AM to say:

Best Adulthood Story has me scratching my head. I turned forty-nine last week (Rupert Grint and I share a birthday), but I've avoided becoming an adult for years now. Money Wisely Spent? Does that include paying my bar tab and playing the Oregon Lottery? Best Drama I can understand; you should see me act out when someone has forgotten to replenish our supply of coffee beans. I still think that the most interesting category is Best Overall...use of banjo players.

Very Short Hidden Story is so obvious that we don't need to hack into the Challenge database this time. A family of very short, seven-inch-high gnomes takes up residence at Harry and Ginny's new home, hiding themselves in the walls. The story will have to involve how they ultimately rid the house of these tiny pests. Am I wrong? Am I ever wrong (not counting all those other times)?

M_And came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.01 - 10:17AM to say:

Spenser, I thought you'd go the more obvious route with your humor with regard to the best "Adult" story. Be that as it may, I'm in the same boat. People have been telling me to grow up for years. Has for the bar tab...you can work on your credit score by setting up a payment plan. The coffee beans aren't my problem. My damn coffee maker died this morning. I'm pretty sure the the end of the owrld is near. Sir Ollivander - I've got a challenge idea for you (or maybe you've already thought of this) Harry and Ginny are looking through a property that he inhertited and will eventually be their home. While exploring a secret back passage way... All kinds of possibilities there. Good luck to all my fellow challengers! - M_And

Zapatorf came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.01 - 12:16PM to say:

Spenser.... are you ever wrong? .......Well........ ;D You're always funny, anyway. And I've been told to grow up often. I think it's contagious. Very short (hidden?) story could mean anything. It could mean that the Burrow and everyone in it are hit with a massive shrinking charm and are forced to reach their giant wands while avoiding giant bugs and Arnold the Pygmy puff. M_And.... Really great challenge idea. I'm only disappointed that we might not see it in action until after 2011.... if you can believe that. 0_o

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.03 - 10:43AM to say:

I was discussing our ideas here with one of my betas (my bartender believe it or not) and he told me about the secret passages that run along our Main Street here in Oregon City. The town abuts the Willamette River, and I guess they once used them to Shanghai sailors. He took me down into the tavern's cellar and showed me part of it; a stone wall that ran along one side into a cement one. Flooding and modernization have destroyed most of the riverfront's hidden passages, but I understand they have some good photographs at our county museum. I hear inspiration calling--that and my coffeepot.

tangle elfwand came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.04 - 02:48AM to say:

very short story? Maybe it needs to be under 10 words. That would be fun... i guess. I like the idea of shrinking though, or if it's about house-elves

gejufan came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.05 - 04:25PM to say:

Spense you always crack me up. i have to say i was highly disappointed with this latest challenge. and i hope the new one will be much better. however i am horrible at taking orders or inspiration from peo... umm i mean challenges. :-]

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.05 - 04:37PM to say:

gejufan-I'm sure that you will love whatever Sir Ollivander develops. This Challenge had some great possibilities. We could perhaps copy the instructions off the back of a laundry soap...the trick is to try. We are trying to grow as writers and the Challenges are meant to make us think, produce...yes grow within a very limited context. If we can do that then imagine what is possible beyond the restraints of a contest. If the next one requires you to write about tiny pixies running a new discotech, and you are able to come up with a few lines, then you and we are the better for it.

M_And came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.05 - 07:09PM to say:

Spenser - Far be it from me to be a conformist but that was a spot on reply to gejufan. In my case, the challenge beofre this was way out of my comfort zone, But it force me to think more and to place myself in a different perspective than is my norm. Was it my best work? Probably not. Did it recieve rave reviews? - well... I didn't get trashed, but I knew it wasn't going to win. And that's ok, because for the authors it should be about the journey, and so much about the arrival. just throwing in my $2.02 cents worth (inflation don't you know). - Mike

M_And came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.05 - 07:11PM to say:

That last line should read "...not so much about the arrival..." - I apparently need a beta for my comments. - M

Perspicacity came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.05 - 08:37PM to say:

Mike, at least yours made it past submission. It's advisable to ensure that every rule is clarified exhaustively prior to putting a word down, else you could end up with 20k words penned and only ff.net to post them (like some idiot I know). :)

p.s. Note the smiley face. (The silver lining is that said idiot did revise his piece into a superior story elsewhere; to be posted soon).

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.06 - 12:11AM to say:

Mike--You voiced it exactly for everyone. It is the journey. I actually wasn't at all comfortable myself with the last Challenge. That was when I enlisted my school-age children to throw ideas at me. My daughter Loony was extremely helpful, but it was actually my Betas who kept me going with original inspiration. Yes, I do utilize a bartender and two barbers in that capacity.

M_And came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.06 - 01:27AM to say:

Perspicacity - I know it's tougher here to submit than other sites (personal experience speaking here), but I've been told by one administrator/validator that they really make a conscious effort to maintain the quality of the writing, Ultimately that's a very good thing. I know before I got a site approved beta, I had all kinds of difficulty with submissions. That, I'm happy to say has gotten much better. One because I understand what they want and expect better, and two because working with my beta has made writing better. So it's all good really. Hang in there, there's always a learning curve to go through, and we all have to go through it. Spenser - A bartender and two barbers? Isn't there a joke that starts off that way? :) Besides, I figured it would be the brew master behind the counter at your favorite coffe shop. Which reminds me, I still haven't replaced mt broken coffe maker! Oh crap! Tomrrow's gonna be rough. - M

Mojomig came out of the woodwork on 2008.09.10 - 03:25AM to say:

Hello peeps! After a what seems like a lifetime of personal issues and an extremely excessive workload at work, I'm writing again and hope to take part in the next challenge.
