It's a Revival!
Greetings, everyone! You may or may not be aware that SIYE has an area for authors who are looking for tips and recommendations to improve their writing. Oddly enough, the name of this section is "Writing Essays, Tips and Recommendations." (Boring, but effective.) Don't feel bad if you were unaware of its existence. This area of SIYE has been under-utilized lately, and with Lord Dreadnault's permission, we are in the midst of reviving it.

What has been going on? Well, the updates include:

  • New links to the WET&R section via the Help page and via the Extras page
  • Touching up the essays that were already posted there
  • One brand new grammar and usage essay on Common Word Confusion Problems

As the new coordinator for this section, I plan on adding a new essay/tip every two to three months, depending on demand for new material and other SIYE obligations (you know, like writing and beta-ing).

I'd like to extend a heartfelt thanks to the members of the SIYE staff and SIYE Betas who have assisted me so far in this endeavour, and I look forward to working with them more in the future.

If anyone has any suggestions, comments or complaints, feel free to contact me at sanidad[at]siye.co.uk

Thanks for your time.

This is one of the best ideas since microwavable pumpkin juice. Our site is naturally dedicated to promoting our favorite couple, but second only to that is the goal of producing quality stories for our readers and helping our members grow as writers. In fact that said quality does promote Harry and Ginny--no one wants to read a poorly written story regardless of its theme. One thing that we ask of our overwhelmed Beta Readers is that they not only make corrections, but also help the authors see where they can improve their work. Our Archivists as well try to contact those who submit marginal stories to point out what needs to be amended to bring it up to standard. Most often that staff is buried in work as well, but the alternatives might be pencil-whipped stories that don't belong or potentially good ones that we didn't take the time to help with. You can see both at less professional fan fiction sites.

With that said, it is now and always shall be the primary responsibility of the author to write and submit the best possible product. Utilize this great resource. Print out the WET&R tips and suggestions and have them next to you as you write. Bookmark a good Harry Potter lexicon. Keep the books themselves handy. If you need additional help please feel free to contact someone on the Beta Staff List, or if you prefer face-to-face interaction (as I do) print off a copy of your story for your English teacher (or barber, or bartender...). I'm adding my compliments and thanks to Sanidad for running with this. Eric B.
