Silver Trinket Voting
The nominations for the 2008-2009 Silver Trinkets are now closed. The system has created a voting ballot. Most categories have the top ten, but owing to ties, some categories have more than ten choices on the ballot.

We will accept votes through 10 January 2010. I will then ensure that the top story in each category does indeed fit the category and issue awards, at which time, the nominations for the next round will be opened.

Please take the opportunity to review these excellent stories and vote for your favorite in each category. The link to the ballot can be found on your account page. If you are at this moment logged in, you can also click on the link provided below.

Also, on behalf of the staff, I wish all of you a very Happy New Year.

Robert L. Scott
President, SIYE

The VOTE NOW! link does not work. I am logged in but it takes me only to a blank page and it has a log in tab at the top right as if I am not logged in.

Bear came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.01 - 06:20AM to say:

Kezzabear:Can you try logging out and then back in and let me know if that makes any difference.

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.01 - 06:52AM to say:

It didn't mke any difference although if I tried to navigate away from the blank page within the site it treated me as if I was logged out. Going back to my book mark I was logged in as per usual. I was able to vote using the link in my Account. It is just the VOTE NOW! link in this message that I was unable to use.

Didn't work for me but I was able to vote by going from Mt Account to the page.

bransfolly came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.01 - 09:55AM to say:

This may be a silly question, but why can't it be ensured that the stories in each category are correct before voting?

Bear came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.01 - 10:05AM to say:

Okay, there was a problem with the link in this news post, it has now been fixed.

Lord Dreadnault came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.01 - 12:50PM to say:

bransfolly: The Silver Trinkets system has been set up so as to be as automatic as possible. It is designed to automatically ensure that stories are nominated for the right categories. However, given that the most determined cheater is apt to find a way around the system, it was necessary to set it up so that the results had to be ratified by a staffer. So, yes, it would make more sense to check the category before the voting, but 1) by doing it at the end we can also check on everything else we're concerned about and minimize the effort and 2) we're depending on the voters to typically not vote for something that ought not to win. In addition to this, I can assure you that no staffer who has stories involved in the voting will be assigned to do the "ratifying" and that if the ratifier feels that a winner should not have won, he or she will have to get the backing of five or more staffers before the winner can be rejected. I hope this sheds more light on the subject.

MyGinevra came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.01 - 04:32PM to say:

I have to agree with bransfolly. If a story is disqualified after all the votes are counted, that would mean that a lot of votes will have been wasted; it would be unfair to both the voters and the author. It seems to me that it would have been better to take a couple of days or even a week between the closing of nominations and the opening of balloting to make sure a story fit into a category.

Kezzabear came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.01 - 08:08PM to say:

I was under the impression a story could not be nominated in a category unless it was a listed category in the profile. Apart from that I have a question - once you have voted is the list unavailable completely? I know you used to be able to look at the standings as the voting went on - is this feature no longer available and is there anywhere a list is becasue I can't rememeber what's even in the running since I voted.

Lord Dreadnault came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.01 - 11:20PM to say:

We're going to look into programming the system so that we may get rid of stories that have been improperly put on the ballot earlier than after the voting is finished. The winners would still be subject to ratification. However, when I talk about rejecting a winner, I'm talking about extreme and unlikely circumstances; it's mostly a safety of last resort. I've also requested that we look into making the list of stories currently on the ballot available for viewing before and after a user has cast their vote. However, I'm not inclined to make the running tally for nominations or voting available. If anyone else has suggestions or ideas, post a comment. We're open to improvements.

Aragorn came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 01:46AM to say:

My perspective is that your system is neither as obvious or intuitive as you seem to hink: ie, the voting makes no sense to me. How does one actually select a favorite in a category? Clicking on a story simply takes you to the story.

Lord Dreadnault came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 02:44AM to say:

Aragorn: Ensure that you are logged in and then go to the ballot using either the link at the bottom of my announcement or the one on your account page. Instead of the clicking on the title or author of the story you want to vote for, click on the little round circle thingy to the left of the title. When you have chosen one story from each category hit the vote button on the bottom of the screen.

bransfolly came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 06:35AM to say:

This may be a silly question, but why can't it be ensured that the stories in each category are correct before voting?

MyGinevra came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 07:57AM to say:

One author who I know expressed great surprise that their story was able to be nominated in one of the categories (Romance). And I know another story, whose author I'm not in contact with, that was able to be nominated in another category (Comedy) which was funnier than the story because it was never intended to be humorous. And what happened to Angst? I do agree that running totals should not be available.

Bear came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 08:23AM to say:

The ability for stories to be nominated is based on the genres that the author selects. If they have selected Comedy/Romance etc then they can be nominated for that category. If a story has been able to be nominated for a category that it shouldn't have been, then its either got the wrong genre's set by the author or theres a problem with the nomination page, in which case i will fix it, so please let me know what story has caused this problem by site message.

Bear came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 08:27AM to say:

Bransfolly It is possible for an admin to remove a story from the ballot, and If a story makes it onto the ballot that is blatently innapropriate then it will of course be removed. I think what Robert is trying to say, is the final stage of issuing awards is done by an admin, to make sure there is nothing untoward happening. This is a rare occurance, and example I could think of is say a story makes it onto the ballot for best one shot, then half way through the voting, the author uncompletes it and then adds new chapters. Should it still be eligable for best one shot? I'm not sure if the answer to this is yes or no, but I'm just citing it as an example.

MyGinevra came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 09:37AM to say:

Bear, It would be inappropriate for someone other than the author to suggest removing a story from a category, especially if that someone had entries of his own on the ballot. I understand the mechanism of using the author's own categories. The only aspect I thought wasn't quite right was letting readers vote for a story, presumably giving it the award, and then having it disqualified after the fact for being in an incorrect category. The story I'm thinking of that probably shouldn't be in Comedy probably has a decent chance of winning. But I guess we'll just have to see what happens.

Bear came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 09:59AM to say:

MyGinevra: I very much doubt a story would be disqualified at that stage unless it was a blantant case of cheating.

Lord Dreadnault came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 12:17PM to say:

As Bear has said, what categories a story may be nominated for are dependent on how the author categorizes it when it is posted. We depend on the voters to choose the story that is best in each category. This seems to work. I have been tracking the tally and I see that some stories that are on the ballot for multiple categories are doing much better in one category versus the other. Because we formerly had great trouble in past Silver Trinket rounds and because we don't believe that any system is fool-proof, we have made it necessary for an Admin to ratify the winners. (An Admin whose story is not on the ballot) We're not talking about quibbling over whether a story is funny, romantic, or dramatic enough to be the winner in those categories. We're talking about instances where there has been blatant cheating that was not caught until the last second. Obviously, the staff and the readers ought to keep an eye out for those problems so they may be solved prior to the final tally of votes. As for the angst category, it has been lumped in elsewhere. We were afraid that if we put down too many categories, everything would be spread too thin. If there are stories you feel need our attention, feel free to e-mail me.

And just how did I decide on Best Completed story???? I threw all the names in a hat and pulled one out!!! They are all so good. I was also surprised to see some stories in the Comedy category - when there was humour in the story - it was mainly drama!

Aragorn came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 06:23PM to say:

Lord Dreadnault: the "round circle thingies" don't show up in Safari for the Mac...so your description alerted me to a "browser issue". Still didn't help me with the profoundly difficult choice between MoO and NOFP in one category.

M_And came out of the woodwork on 2010.01.02 - 06:27PM to say:

Just a quick technical clarification on the term "Comedy". A story can still be a "Comedy" without being all that funny. The key point to look for in such a story is does it have a "Happy Ending" vs. a Tragic Ending". Don't know if that helps anyone, but I thought I'd throw that out there. - M_And.

Aragorn Im going to contact you by site message about the browser problem.
