Story reviewing function

Dear all,

Authours, please do not feel unloved for the next while if you don't receive reviews on your stories -- the function is temporarily unavailable, and will hopefully be restored reasonably soon!

For those wondering about the recent outages, they were the result of denial of service attacks.  Why hackers might wish to target a site that brings the joys of free, heart-felt fiction to the world, we may never know.  But with your patience and the technical skills of generous volunteers like Bear (who donated a good chunk of his time thwarting the attacks) we shall persevere!

Happy reading and writing to all!

                                - GHL

P.S.  While we wait for word about the reviewing function, anyone who feels strongly (hopefully positively) about any of our new slate of stories is welcome to leave a comment in this thread.

Dopeydo came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.20 - 07:38AM to say:

Not to invite more of this, whatever the motivation might have been, but it certainly does take a special kind of person to DDoS a fanfiction site.

Dopeydo came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.20 - 07:39AM to say:

Thanks for the update.

pleurocoelus came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.20 - 08:54AM to say:

Could it be angry altshippers? I'm only half joking as all kinds of stuff, including real-world violence, erupted from the shipping wars back when HP was still being published.

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.20 - 09:05AM to say:

I too was half thinking of slash-ers, or disgruntled Durmstrang deviants, or something.

Sadly, I most suspect those viagra-starved purveyors of Gucci handbags and RayBan sun glasses who no longer find us an easy target to spam.

That aside, though... Dopeydo, Pleurocoelus and others -- I owe you reviews for your wonderful challenge entries. I will likely begin posting those in this discussion space quite soon.

hgromance came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.20 - 12:10PM to say:

Thanks for the update! I had certainly wondered what was going on! Seems silly that someone would try to hack the site. I guess, just because they could.

ngayonatkailanman came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.20 - 03:24PM to say:

It is a real shame. I have been trying so many times to review REALIZATIONS and keep getting the ERROR message. Now I know why. KUDOS to Potterfan.

ngayonatkailanman came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.20 - 03:25PM to say:

Why are the COMMENTS and REVIEWS in white typo? It is really so hard to see.

ngayonatkailanman came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.20 - 03:28PM to say:

COMMENTS and REVIEWS clarification: Whenever I type in a review, it is in white, When I read them, they are in black letterings which makes it really easy to read. Please could you also change the white to black in the review boxes?

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.20 - 04:42PM to say:

It's difficult for me to reproduce your problem, as I expect it is browser-dependent, and/or a function of the specific 'skin' setting you have for your profile. Maybe you could send a screen-shot illustrating your problem to

ellen came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.21 - 04:47AM to say:

A big THANK YOU to everyone who is working to fix the issues. I didn't realise how much I'd miss the site until it wasn't accessible.

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.21 - 05:30PM to say:

Oh, please don't tell Harry about the DOS attacks. He would only blame himself again that people who love him were attacked. Do you really think that Voldemort is back again? Whatever, thanks to everyone who helped defeating him.

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.26 - 05:36AM to say:

I'd rather collect my reviews and copy them into the right review boxes as soon as the review function works again. I just hope that 'reasonable soon' is measured by days, not weeks. As far as I understand, the the authors usually place a high value on the review counter.;)

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.03.26 - 06:10AM to say:

Sure -- you're definitely not alone in not wishing to break with the usual protocol.

I too hope that the review capacity will be functional again soon, but unfortunately I can't make any guarantees on time frame. I myself don't have the power to get into the inner workings of the site and know only one person who does. He has worked miracles before (including last weekend) but I wouldn't expect that he can take every weekend reconfiguring the internal scripts.

Anyway, I'll continue to drop the occasional prompter, and I too will transfer my comments into the appropriate story review space when it's possible, but can't tell you much more than that yet.

Thank you all for your continued patience!
