Challenge 2017-2 Awards

For this latest Challenge 2017-2 awards, we are pleased to announce (drumroll please) the following triumphant stories:

And finally, the Rory Award for Most Gratuitous Use of the Word 'Belgium' shall be shared between Revenge is Sweet by Gin110881, and Homecoming by Brennus.

A tremendous round of virtual applause to our diligent judges:  ZA, SM, AM, KH, JG, MG and AS!

And now, here is the topic for Challenge 2017-3:  Somebody is going on a magical creature hunt -- tell us about it!

Categories for the challenge include 'Most Adventuresome', 'Most Unexpected' and 'Best Overall'.  Stories must be submitted by midnight, Nov. 15, in order for award announcements to be made on Dec. 1.

For this challenge, I am going to waive the strict requirement that stories focus on Harry/Ginny, although authors who find some way to at least weave them into tale will always earn a little extra appreciation from many SIYE devotees.

Please use this space to begin proposing topics for Challenge 2018-1.  Please Please.

carolquin came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.01 - 05:14PM to say:

Congrats to the winners but can you please keep politics out of this site. I come here to read good stories not to get political headlines.

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.01 - 05:39PM to say:

Certainly yes, I can make sure that I scale back on any lame attempts at light humour that accompanies my efforts here. I can also scale back on my efforts, perhaps. Any interest in volunteering as challenge coordinator, carolquin?

carolquin came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.01 - 06:49PM to say:

If it wasn't for my 2 kiddies and my job I would. Light humor is gine. Any kind of humor is fine. But it's not humorous when politics is involved.

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.02 - 04:04AM to say:

I for my part, believe that you can't bear today's politics without a good measure of humour. However, let's drop the subject. So, magical creature hunt is it. I even have an idea. However, are you kidding? A story without focus on Harry/Ginny? Is there anything like that at all? Well, Okay, earlier, in the times when we've yet learned that the earth is the centre of our universe. But today we know this was wrong, and that in reality Harry and Ginny are the centre of our universe.

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.02 - 04:06AM to say:

Is there a word limit for this stupid box?

ellen came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.02 - 08:40AM to say:

Hmm, clearly The Last Leg won't ever get exported across the Pond. Regarding the challenge results- I'm really pleased the honours were shared equally as it was so difficult to choose between the entries.

StarFeather came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.03 - 05:36AM to say:

Congrats, winners^! The next challenge sounds interesting. I may make an entry.

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.03 - 08:56AM to say:

Martin -- very sorry to hear that you were having trouble with your message. If you wanted to e-mail me your intended text, I could check to see if there's a special character or whatnot tripping the system. Or, I can just add it to the growing of lists of things that are slightly broken on the site.

Ellen, yes, I agree with you that a split decision was the most satisfying outcome. Both the judges' deliberations and the PC voting produced fascinating outcomes. This time every judge produced comments along with their scores; I will share this useful information with the two authours once I get a half hour to collate the messages.

Finally, StarFeather, it would be great to see another entry from you. Did I already mention how much I enjoyed the last?

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.03 - 06:33PM to say:

The second half of Gin110881's site-thwarted note was topical and of consequence, so let me share it. His words are in bold, and my subcomments are italicised.

Oh, and by the way, thanks for including the nice emerald green blob. Er yes. For clarification to those who aren't aware, the emerald blog seemed to be a fixture in Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker series, from whence came the silly Rory award concept :)

As for the proposing part, I still like the accidental apparition idea as well as Comet Moons time travel idea, where Harry and Ginny go back in time but neither knew the other went back as well. Noted. I will compile this and other prior suggestions in a new news item that I will release in about a month. At that point, further new suggestions are welcome, but everyone's most critical service would be in voting for topics.

Shellyfal came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.04 - 06:54AM to say:

I thought the headline / byline were cute. Quite like the Daily Prophets you'd see in the movies. But anyway, congrats to the winners and thanks for the pranky stories! Looking ahead, why not a Mirror of Erised challenge? A few months after the war, Harry is helping Headmistress McGonnagall get rid of most of the more dangerous Hogwarts artifacts (it's 'school' after all) and comes across the Mirror. On a hunch, he discovers that the mirror can do more than just show one's desire. What happens next?

Brennus came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.04 - 02:36PM to say:

Gratuitous? How dare you! Harry's time in Belgium was essential to the plot. How heartbroken was he to be sent away from all that lovely beer! BTW, everyone knows Russian Goblins are the most mischievous. Why, they broke into my work and changed all my passwords the other day, the scamps. What will they do next? Probably annex the Crimea. Oh, politics! Bad Brennus!!

LysCsuri came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.05 - 11:40AM to say:

Oh, but consider all the publicity, Mr. Brennus! Now I just have to find out if Harry prefers Belgian Abbey beers to Pils. And what sort of pub snacks does he favour? And what was he doing on the wrong side of the channel, anyway?? Oh, and incidentally, I think I met some of those Russian Goblins of yours last night in the club. Ick.

MollyandArthur came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.06 - 07:05AM to say:

Love reading these comments! Congratulations to both winners. They did a wonderful job! The magical creature hunt sounds fun. Greatly looking forward to those stories!!!

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2017.08.11 - 05:40AM to say:

Happy Birthday Ginny!!!

pleurocoelus came out of the woodwork on 2017.09.02 - 04:12AM to say:

Thank you all. I'm glad people enjoyed my embarrassing little tale.
Also, Belgium!
