Challenge 2017-3 update 2

"So I thought to myself, 'Oi James, now you're done for!  It's dead dark an' you'll never find your way back!', then suddenly a second Hinkypunk -- a good Hinkypunk this time -- pops up behind me, an' he's lighting up the gap in the hedge, an' I say, 'Oh bless you, bless you, li'l mate!', an' I run run run all the way back home, and snuck back in bed 'fore anyone even noticed I was gone!"

"You're bluffing, Jamey!"  Albus Severus scowled at his older brother.  "No way you went down to the stream last night, no way there's a Lethifold behind the gorse, and way no way he took Griffy!"

"Leffy-fooled took Gwiffy-Wiffy!"  Lily Luna clapped her hands, grinning cheekily at Albus's glare.

"No bluffin'."  James gave his younger brother a deathly serious smirk.  "Only way to get your stuffed Griffin back now 'sif we go down there together.  You lure the Lethifold away, an' I'll grab Griffy."

"Al fools leffy-fool 'n' Jamey grabs Gwiffy 'n' Lily Luner's gonna watch!"  Lily danced about the room, singing her assessment.

"Oi crumbs."  Albus's face sank wearily into his hand.  "When do we go?"

James thought for a moment.  "Maybe Tuesday night, as it's full moon an' we shan't need the Hinky-"

"Biscuits and milk!"  Ginny sailed into the room with a loaded tray, then froze, reading their faces.  "Oh my!  What are you three planning now??"

After a moment of awkward silence, Lily shrugged.  "Nuffin' Muvver."

I didn't like that there were no comments on this. Let's get some group participation going here. Brennus is long overdue in saying something to amuse me. Thanks to GHL for all his hard work. I would take credit for bringing him here, but that would be preposterous.

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2017.10.04 - 03:57AM to say:

Boah, six weeks only? Obviously, I have to read less and write more in the next couple of weeks. :( "Nuffin' Muvver." GHL, you did it again. This statement is worth an 'outstanding' on its own. Did the wee lass eavesdrop on her mum? :)

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.10.04 - 05:26PM to say:

Thank you both! I say that not because you're flattering me (which is true) but for the more fundamental reason that small talk makes a community, and I appreciate that you contribute in that way and other gestures!

Well, technically I'd say that it was a combination of Reis McLeod and Google that brought me here, however RightT3rantZ, Gin110881, and a bunch of other great characters are responsible for *keeping* me here.

Having mentioned Brennus, I will say that he has continued to serve us all selflessly in the background (cheers Mark!). Typically, the more times we mention his name (or Belgium, or various flavours of beer), the more likely he is to chime in. So let's all quaff our quota of Stella, then sit back and see what happens!

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.10.04 - 05:27PM to say:

Oh, and than you Martin for the kind quip for my little 'next generation' creature quest excerpt. Whipped that one up in 25 minutes, without any preconception of what I was going to say. May all stories be that way! Anyway, best wishes for your *real* story, and happy composing to all our authours!

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2017.10.05 - 03:04AM to say:

To be honest, I'm a wee bit baffled by the continuous mentioning of Stella. My Belgian colleagues always told me, back in the nineties of the last millennium, that Stella is the best choice when one feels the urgent need for a good old-fashioned headache. Since then I prefer Leffe, brune or blonde, to Stella, or, in the rare cases the devil inside me makes me feel particularly brave, a couple of pints of Duvel. Yikes, I wouldn't be surprised if the Belgian wizards drink beer with pumpkin flavour. Oh, and that gives me to a nice idea for a challenge. I'm going to look for the right thread to add my few Knuts...

Reis McLeod? Was that an inspiration for the award winning Biscuits Deferred? That was a pretty good one. It is up there with Gothic and Butterfly Effect for my favorite story titles on this site. Brennus is like our community NostrA.dU.mas. If you need a winning spell checker Mark, don't look at me. However, if you want to see a handsome face, then by all means do. I kid, Brennus is one of a kind, which is why I am his #3 fan. If we all chip in and buy him a bottle of Belgium? and wrap him up tightly in a warm woolen blanket, he will make an easy target for the little lazy eyed man to zap his fleshy bits and force him to give us another one-shot. In the meantime I can only imagine he must keep busy giving poor old Tim his regiment of electro shock therapy somewhere deep in the bowels of SIYE. Yeah, this is completely off topic, but since when has that really ever mattered? Also, I am VEry much looking forward to the fires. This website is truly a Jem.

La Chouffe or bust

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.10.05 - 03:25PM to say:

Haven't tried La Chouffe, but now I want to! I could get pilloried for this, but my old prejudices slant north of the border to Grolsch country. I suppose if I really got picky about actual taste tests, I'd be exposed as a fraud, but I fell in love with the bottle back in my home brewing days. It got to be a bit of a bit of a vicious circle though -- drink enough Grolsch in time to have enough bottles for my next home batch.

In terms of real Belgian beers, I have a (no-longer-so-secret) thing for lambics. Brouwerij 3 Fonteinen is a great cure for October blahs. But speaking of October (and All Hallows Eve), a couple years ago Brennus introduced me to the 'Hobgoblin' phenomenon. Since then, I've encountered 'Double Zombie Blood'. When there are seasonal offerings like that, then sod the pumpkins.

GHL came out of the woodwork on 2017.10.08 - 12:50PM to say:

We're up to four stories now. Happy happy!

On the question about 'Biscuits Deferred', that's a fascinating thought. The Ginny sections in BD very likely do come across with the same sort of mood as Reis MacLeod cultured in 'Ginny Weasley and the Half Blood Prince'. That atmosphere may indeed have helped set the tone in Biscuits.

Anyway, for those who haven't read it, GW&HBP is one of the best (if not 'the' best) true canon pieces on the site. Highly recommended.

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2017.10.09 - 04:20AM to say:

GW & HBP has been on my extended reading list for a long time. Evidently, I need to raise its rank a bit. It's been a while since I got hold of a few bottles of Hobgoblin, to be honest, it's been so long that I don't remember how they tasted. If I remember correctly, there is still a bottle in the cellar. Unfortunately, it is empty.

Brennus came out of the woodwork on 2017.10.29 - 09:32AM to say:

My ears are burning - is someone talking about me? Seriously, I might be making a return to this site sometime in the near future and bribery of an alcoholic kind might speed my return. I don't need a Patreon account so much as a Pintreon account. Eh? Eh? I'll get my coat...

Brennus came out of the woodwork on 2017.10.29 - 09:38AM to say:

Gin110881 - blonde beers make me want to heave, honestly. Not as bad as this current trend of having grapefruit flavoured beers. honestly, who thought that was a good idea? The only people I've ever seen drinking the stuff were hipster gits who thought it made them look cool. Can I just flag up my current preference for Japanese whiskies while I'm at it, particularly Nikka from the barrel. The finest blended whiskey ever created!

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2017.10.29 - 12:32PM to say:

I've often heard that the Japanese whiskey is supposed to be very good. Maybe I should give it a try. However, I set my heart on the heavily peated stuff from Islay, Lagavulin and Caol Ila.

BigFatMaybe came out of the woodwork on 2017.11.04 - 01:21PM to say:

Honey liquor whisky is where it's at for me. Drambuie is too tasty for my own good.

RighT3rantZ came out of the woodwork on 2017.11.08 - 12:45PM to say:

Both aloud and sotto voce are the fires that burn B man! The return of Brennus you say? Returning with a story? Oh, please don't let this be just another tease. When Brennus, GHL, and HPmum2014 are all in the Right column, I am in Hogwarts know...that place it got sent after you nuked all of 'em, yeah!
