Yeah this does seem a rather... random way to end the chapter. That's ok, though. It's a good plot. I hope you keep going with it.

Interesting start. I look forward to more, probably not before DH though, right? Well speaking of DH, enjoy reading it when it comes out in 5 days (yay!) :)

Hi Laura,

Very nifty. This clearly cannot be the end of the story, and it certainly has me rarin' to know what comes next.

I think my favorite line in the whole story is "This isn't a fairy tale." That one made me laugh out loud. (It reminded me of the first line of the Superman movie (the one from 1978), which was, "This is no fantasy.") My second-favorite line was "Are you my mother?" which of course made me think of the children's book of that name -- I started to laugh, but then it chilled me.

What is really compelling about the second half of the chapter is the pronounced moral ambiguity Harry feels about Hissy and how he's raising her. The mere fact that they blinded her at birth gives me the willies, and the careful way Harry is telling her part-truths puts a rock in the pit of my stomach. There is a part of my brain that is saying, "This cannot end well." The very last line -- and I have no idea of whether you meant it this way -- made me think of Genesis: "For on that day, you will surely die."

I wasn’t entirely sure why you used a rotating POV – Harry to Ron to Hermione – at the beginning of the chapter, since the POV seemed to stick pretty much with Harry throughout the second half.

Something about Harry asking Ginny for an egg -- something which wasn't necessary for the plot so far as you'd developed it -- struck me as seriously symbolic or suggestive.

(Hm, making a Basilisk can't be nearly so easy, can it? I mean, wouldn't every second dark wizard have one?)

Can't wait to read more.

~Ken

Author's Response: Ken---my one and only reviewer! Thank you so much, as always, for your insightful comments and praise. As for the Basilisk thing---it isn't easy to raise a Basilisk, unless you're a parselmouth, so that's why there are so few, and that's why Harry gets to be one of them.
