OH, my! What a dark chapter! This is absolutely the best written captivity/torture scene I have read in fan fiction, and is just about as good as anything I have read anywhere in this genre! The emotions are palpable and, at last, Harry gets some benefit from having stood by Dumbledoe, though Albus is correct. He was selfish, and it would have been in the best interest of the Side of Light for him to have trusted Harry to perform side-along Apparition. I HATE torture scenes, but you made this one effective by concentrating on the emotional, rather than the physical, aspects!

Author's Response: I agree that excessive force in torture scenes is abhorrent, so that's why I chose to write from Harry's emotional point of view. It takes away the sadistic glee felt by those inflicting the torture and concentrates on how the victim copes with what is being done to him. I'm glad you liked the chapter. Thanks for reading.

The fact that Harry and Dumbledore became closer lately helps that the both of them are able to comfort each other when trying to survive. Life is hard and unfair, especially to Harry. Whenever he has rebuilt his strength in hard training, he is thrown back and have to start again. I wonder in what state he will face Voldemort at the end.
I've always thought that things like water boarding may have been invented only people as evil as Death Eaters or Voldemort himself.

Author's Response: I'm of the same mind as you on the issue of water boarding. That particular form of torture was in the news when I was writing the chapter and I felt it would be an appropriate addition to the slow, psychological effects of the Chinese water torture the Death Eaters were also using on Harry. However, I couldn't be so mean to Harry and Dumbledore as to put them in separate cells, so giving them the same cell also gave them the mutual comfort they both needed to survive the ordeal. If Harry is rescued and allowed to recuperate, he just might be functioning at a normal mental state when he faces Voldemort.

I found this chapter really, well difficult isn't the right word, but it wasn't an easy read and this is really a huge compliment to you. I got that feeling as I was reading that is usually reserved for dreadful images on the television news regarding horendous famines and war torn countries. How did you manage that with a fiction!? On the surface of it, water dripping on you doesn't sound like too much of a torture but as you read on you sink into Harry's all consuming horror, panic, fear, despair...the list goes on. Let's face it there are sick people out there that get a kick out of seeing defenceless beings suffer and just as in this case, it is way beyond normal people's comprehension...

I got a bit of the way back into my comfort zone with the scenes between Harry and Dumbledore, but his reaction to Dumbledore wanting to send thought and images to him....well my heart just broke for Harry. It kinda reminded me of how, when we've had a bad experience, we presume that all similiar experiences will be the same and we avoid them at all costs. Whereas when forced to endure, for whatever reason, we can discover that things aren't always how they appear...its so often past experiences that shape our views in the future, especially when said experiences have happened in our childhood. (gosh do I get a bonus for the number of times I used the word experiences..lol!)

I'm grateful that Harry has a focus to keep him from completely turning in on himself as I am sure he would never recover from that to be able to participate in the real world. The mind is an incredible and myserious creature...

Author's Response: My secret to making Harry's torture so real is lots of research. I spent hours reading internet articles about Chinese Water Torture, viewed the Myth Busters TV show segment having to do with this sort of torture. (Myth Busters is an American hour-long show on our Discovery Channel that tries to prove/disprove urban myths such as "can a sniffer dog be fooled by household items" or "can you explode a toilet by flushing flamibles", that sort of thing. I love the show and really enjoy the scientific theory behind the myths they bust. If you're interested in watching that segment on YouTube write me a PM and I'll send you the link.) Watching the videos made it so real it was easy to translate what I'd seen into the story. To tell the truth, I nearly put a warning on this chapter because of its disturbing nature. I'm torn between apologizing for taking you (and my other readers) out of your comfort zone and congratulating myself for the same thing. Anyway, as a balance, I needed to have Harry's time with Dumbledore be the comforting, even when difficult and scary subjects must be broached. The same thing needed to happen if Harry was going to hang onto his sanity after Dumbledore's passing; keeping his promise and keeping the information safe gave Harry a purpose for survival and a reason to hope for rescue. Voldemort never took into consideration on how single-minded Harry can be when he has a reason for doing something. This, most likely, will be his saving grace.

This must have been a really tough chapter to write. I rather felt that something of this sort was inevitable, but the idea of using the water torture is clever, even if unsuitable for the squeamish. I think probably this chapter was very necessary. Showing how Harry is coping, and the effect the torture is having on him is really very well done. I liked Dumbledore's support for Harry, too even in his weakened state. Thanks for writing it. SF

Author's Response: You're right, it was a necessary and very tough chapter to write. However, it needed to be done to set up later chapters and show how dependent Harry had become on Dumbledore in order to survive captivity. It's interesting that you're one of the few who thought my use of the two Muggle means of water torture were clever: most people have objected that the Death Eaters wouldn't resort to using anything invented by Muggles, but my response has always been that they could and did put magic to use in both cases. Since we only see Harry's point of view there is no way to know what magical twists the Death Eaters used in administering the torture. As for the squeamish, I hope I gave my readers a suitable warning. Anyway, this was the low point in the story for Harry. He has nothing more to do but go up. I always enjoy your reviews and hope you will review chapter 18 soon.

well im sorry they have not been found yet but then again they need time to look for harry but soon they will be to late.,..kutgw

Author's Response: You seem to have no faith in Harry's ability to look after Professor Dumbledore. Dumbledore may be deep in a coma and unable to talk and interact with Harry, but he still is very much alive. Yes, it will take time for them to be rescued, but the rescue is indeed being planned. I promise you it will happen. Have faith. Thanks for reviewing. ~Arnel

I had found this story a few months ago and then lost my computer and couldn't remember the name of it when I got my computer back. I'm so happy I found it again. Poor Harry, having to go through all that. Poor Ginny for having to 'witness' it. I'm glad Dudley has matured into wanting to help. Update soon.

Author's Response: This chapter is beginning to generate quite a sympathetic turn for both Harry and Ginny. I promise that, for Harry at least, this is about as low as things get. Unfortunately, Ginny's got a way to go yet. I'm really glad you like the more mature Dudley. You'll see some more of him in chapters eighteen and nineteen.. Thanks for reviewing and telling me how much you like the story. ~Arnel

Those DEs certainly seem to have taken to certain Muggle approaches to information acquisition.

I get the impression that this chapter was mostly getting people & perceptions ready for the next, It was quite effective for helping the reader grasp what's happening with the captives, though -- and the Summoning portends Interesting Things shortly....

Author's Response: I debated long and hard about what methods, other than the Cruciatus Curse, could be used to extract information out of Harry without leaving a mark and how to make a Muggle method more magical. I finally settled on what you read, and yes, it's the low point of the story so all anyone can go is up towards the last three chapters which are still giving me trouble! Thanks for your kind words. ~Arnel

Another tough chapter for Harry and Dumbledore, I am glad that Harry is able to do something for him even if it isn't much considering the circumstances.

I hope that they can find some way of rescuing them soon. I seriously hope that Ginny will not see Harry any different after this.

Author's Response: There needed to be some good in this chapter to balance out all the bad stuff going on, so Harry's time with Dumbledore seemed the most appropriate even though it was a very sad time for them both. Thank you for taking the time to write to me. ~Arnel

Wow! I'm glad you're back. I've missed this story and come looking for it several times over it's hiatus. Poor Harry! I'm looking forward to his freedom and reunion with the Weasley's. Terrible torture scenes, and now no Dumbledore...

Author's Response: It's good to be back, even if I'm still having trouble with the last three chapters... which are 'way in the future! This is probably the lowest point in the story for our favorite boy wizard, so there's only one way to go for him and that's up. And yeah, it was a tough chapter to write. Thanks for kind welcome back. ~Arnel
