Very amusing chapter. I liked the visit to the stately home and that the home ended up being a haunted house. The gay docent reminiscing about his days as an actor was great. I am sure the ghost is happy to have finally connected with someone. Ginny's first ride on a motorcycle was certainly memorable.

Author's Response: You know, a few people gave me a lot of grief about this chapter. It just shows, some people have no sense of humour.

Chaper six, has to be one of the funniest chapters I've ever read in fanfiction. I actually choked on my water when I read " Stop taking pictures, you idiotic sausage muncher! You’ll blind us all!” ....LMAO, Fantastic chapter

Author's Response: It seems like a lifetime ago that I wrote that chapter. I hope my writing has moved on a bit since, but I do still have a soft spot for this and 'The List'. It doesn't stop me wanting to go back and re-write half of it, though.

Loved it! I did have to google a few words and phrases, but very enjoyable :) Harry does manage to attract attention where ever he goes!

Author's Response: I’m interested in what you had to Google now. I’ll have all you yanks talking like Dick Van Dyke before I’m finished – Gawd bless ya, Marry Poppins!

Oh the things we hide from our co-workers and friends, like funny little fan fiction hobbies :) Very funny chapter!

Author's Response: My co-workers are the only people who don’t know I write this stuff, which, of course, is perfect if I want to get revenge on them for some indiscretion by incorporating them into a story! Err, now I think about it as revenge schemes go that’s pretty lame. I guess I’ll have to go back to putting laxative in the Marketing teams coffee instead.

Loved Hugh and the Earl. (what are the chancds of the real Hugh never finding out!?)

I'm glad Ginny and Harry helped Hugh out. I get irritated by folk on tours etc that muck about and spoil it for others when you've paid good money, or spent time getting somewhere...can you tell I'm a teacher lol!

I've never watched, as a point of principle, any of these supernatural programmes. I just remember watching trailers with Yvette Fielding shrieking, and so over the top it made me grind my teeth!!!

Author's Response: Yvette Fielding makes me shriek at the best of times, but that’s another story. As noted, this chapter started life as a stand-alone story which was originally very different. The more I adapted it to fit ‘The Oath’ the more sympathy I developed for Hugh. The first draft had a completely different ending, but I that it works well with H/G helping him. I’m fairly certain the real Hugh will never know I’ve named this character after him as I’m pretty sure the only thing he’s ever used the internet for is to check the cricket scores.

You have Yahs way down there in London? We have them by the truckload here in St Andrews... So I feel our dear old queen's pain.

Author's Response: It took me a minute to latch onto what you meant. I mentioned the Earl as being part of the ‘okay-yah’ brigade, didn’t I? Having read this I typed ‘Yahs’ into Google and got directed to ‘The Sinner guide to St Andrews’ which explained all. The ‘okay-yah’ thing might be a bit eighties, but they certainly seem to relate to the same thing. BTW on the ‘Sinners…’ site I was particularly impressed with the ‘I Saw You’ section where people seem to put up a description of some random person that noticed about in the hope that said person will contact them. Great stuff. I especially liked the appeal to the ‘green-haired woman’ who ‘sometimes pops in Greggs for a pasty’. What man amongst us hasn’t dreamed of meeting a woman like that?

This chapter was good. I can see where you were going with the stereotypical gay British actor. Its not homophobic or anything. This was a good side story but it focused too little on Harry and Ginny and their antics. When can we expect another chapter? Will Malfoy be put in his place? Here's hoping!

Author's Response: You’re right, not a great deal of H&G in it, but I’m allowed to experiment every once in a while. Besides, I just like imagining Ginny in those tight dragon skin leathers. As for the next chapter, as soon as I finish typing this I will be posting it. Revenge plan ahoy!

very funny!! I was waiting for Harry to help him with the scaring.

Author's Response: Nah, Harry wouldn't stoop to Muggle baiting (unless it was the Dursley's)

I go away for a few days and come back to 3 chapters....All really excellent , well done as usual
Mr Brennus.I cant wait to read more about the naked pond scene.

Also looking forward to Ginny/Andy revenge on the Malfoy's.

Author's Response: Thought I hadn’t seen you around for a few chapters, CT. Judging from some of the previous reviews my ‘Brit-speak’ maybe causing a few problems so it’s good to have someone around who speaks the same language! Talking of A/G’s revenge the next few chapters will be getting that underway.

I will say that given the era that is the well-spring for the story I was highly concerned Hugh was going to be in the Paul Lynde/Charles Nelson Reilly/Mr Humphries vein of mincing high camp stereotypes that are, outside of a John Waters movie, problematic to modern sensibilities (or at least should be). That along with Harry and Ginny's little foray into gay panic (I know, I know, replace the dirty old man with a dirty old woman and the joke still works, but it's also lazy, and a bit ugly humor) and I was concerned about the direction this chapter was headed in. Fortunately Hugh never dipped totally into cliche and the chapter rallied from there, but for a minute, I was worried. So would I say homophobic? No, of course not, but it did edge into some uncomfortable stereotypes, but onwards and upwards.

Author's Response: I had to look up who Paul Lynde and Charles Nelson Reilly are, I don’t think either of them made much of an impact this side of the pond (although I did recognise CNR from an X-files episode). The Mr Humphries is a lot more familiar obviously and with my long held belief that my stories are Harry Potter meets the Carry On films I can see where you were coming from. To be quite honest though, I was thinking more ‘The naked civil servant’ than the Carry On’s. Hugh’s character was in the tradition of the old thespians, the ‘luvies’ who would quite happily refer to themselves as ‘old queens’. I’d hoped at the start I’d made him an intelligent if rather tragic character that had his moment in the spot-light and is forever living in the past. I admit Harry’s reaction was a bit ‘gay panic’ as you put it but don’t you think that’s the way a lot of young blokes (especially the one’s not so cosmopolitan like Harry) would react? As Ginny points out he can stand up to all-powerful, evil wizard but put him in that situation and he goes to pieces. So, all in all, I plead guilty to the uncomfortable stereotyping but definitely not guilty of the homophobia.

Well I'm glad to see that they could help Hugh out in the end but something tells me he. Will lose his job now....as for Harry and Ginny they could defiantly get in to a lot of trouble if not supervised.......kutgw

Author' s Response: Something tells me Hugh will make an effort to keep the job now. He’s probably got a lot of dirt on his boss so that will probably help! As for Harry and Ginny getting themselves into trouble if not supervised – definitely!

I truly love this story and the one before it, both are fantastic reads!!! I will admit though I am having a bit of a blonde moment and am curious about the story about the man and the ghost. Was that based on an actual book? Please don't think I'm crazy and stupid for asking that? Anyways great story!!!

Author's Response: Originally, I wrote this chapter as a stand-alone story but adapted it to fit this story. In my first draft it had a very different ending (the ghost was evil and trapped all the visitors in the house. It was then up to Harry and Ginny to rescue everyone). I’d previously commented to Mrs Brennus that I was worried that I’d made H&G too bitchy in chapter four, and she felt that the original ending I had for this chapter made them look a bit unsympathetic as well. So I changed it and effectively made Ginny the matchmaker between Hugh and Archie which works much better. I’m afraid I didn’t base it on any book or film I’m aware of; I just wanted to give it a happy ending. Does anyone out there know of a love story between a man and a ghost?

Could you tone down the homophobia please? Also can I suggest avoiding using racially based insults.

Author's Response: Homophobia? Can you please tell me EXACTLY what if homophobic about this story? In case you missed it, this story is basically a love story, admittedly a rather unusual one. If I was truly homophobic do you think I would have written that? So what has got you so offended then? Was it Harry’s comments? I think that his reaction was pretty typical of many heterosexual males in that situation and Ginny quite rightly made fun of him about it. Racially based insults? That must be the sausage munching line, right? Again, I think that was an honest reaction from Hugh at that point, especially as he had just been blinded by a flashbulb. Yes, it maybe nationalistic stereotyping but in case you failed to notice I’ve been taking the mickey out of my own nationality all through both my posted stories. Can I suggest in future you engage your brain before making such deeply offensive insults?

I love this story!! Can not wait for more. Your notes are great as well.

Author's Response: I’m rattling through this story at present! The whole story is actually already written (I much prefer to have it finished before I start posting) but just needs my beta to go through it (always a big job with my wayward grammar). Still, at this rate all thirteen chapters should be up by the end of the month.

Hey! I like Titus Andronicus, it is so wonderfully vicious!
Chav, Jack-the-lad, cricket terms, I need to Brit to American dictionary (why I would never attempt HP fanfiction.) I like on the border, so I speak Canadian, but some of yours I can't even begin to translate. Hooray for google.
Good chapter. I like the distraction into "boring" every day life. You did a nice job with showing the real side of our favorite couple.

Author's Response: We really do speak different languages, don’t we? In many ways I’ve always felt it’s a surprise that Harry Potter became such a global phenomenon as it is very British. The public school environment, the choice of language (although I doubt any British schoolboy has said ‘crikey’ or ‘blimey’ for about forty years), right through the choice of locations (Scottish castles, suburban Surrey, Malfoys Wiltshire manor house), all these things are images of a forgotten Britain (if such a place ever really existed). Even the ‘pure-blood’ stuff has strong echoes of the British class system which has divided the country for so long. I often wonder if it’s simply that JKR wrote such a wonderful, imaginative story that overcomes its strong nation identity, or if it’s actually part of its appeal to non-Brits? I’m not sure I use many more purely English phrases than JKR does, but maybe because they are so ingrained in my normal talk I simply don’t notice. Besides, there are an awful lot of Americanised stories on site, with their use of ‘sidewalks’ instead of pavements and ‘brownstone’ buildings, and I’ve already had my rant about breakfast items. I’m just balancing things out. I should offer myself as a Brit-picker really, shouldn’t I?
