Interesting chapter. Not at all what I expected, but fascinating nonetheless. I am glad that he has a friend.

Author's Response: I've always maintained that the Japanese chapters of this story are some of the best I've ever written. Shame not many people seem to agree with me. ;-(

Interesting. I wouldn't have pictured Harry in Japan, but it seems to be working. I like Riku - Harry needs to know that he is not alone in his purpose.

Author's Response: As I mentioned in the authors notes, the Japan chapters were inspired by the wonderful film ‘Yamada – Way of the Samurai’. I’m a sucker for Samurai films which probably stems from a fantastic Japanese TV show called ‘The Water Margin’ which I saw when I was just a tiny Brennus (those days are long gone). There’s just something about the culture that draws me in. Mind you, I’m pretty obsessed with Vikings as well, so maybe I just have a thing for swords.

I am really sorry for constantly making Star Wars references, but the meeting scene between Harry and Tamazuki reminded me so much of Luke and Yoda. How he was reluctant to take Harry on because of his age, but because Nicholas was his friend and asked he was going to do it. Harry is going to be completely amazing when he leaves Japan! If Ginny is dating Michael or Dean when he returns she is going to drop them in a hot second for Harry :)

I enjoyed reading this section and it's nice to be outside England and Europe in general and have a new locale to read about. There is so much to be learned by other cultures and Harry is really going to benefit from the experience.

Author's Response: Actually, in a previous review (I think it was Arnel’s) I did mention that Tamazuki was a bit of an amalgamation of many cinematic ‘masters’ but I specifically excluded Yoda on the grounds that he gets on my tits. Great, you’re a hugely powerful, all knowing Jedi master but you can’t even string a coherent sentence together? I have no problem with the Star Wars references though. In fact, previously I’ve draw comparisons between my three great fantasy hero’s; Luke Skywalker, Fox Mulder and Harry. For some reason I’m always drawn to the lonely, brooding type of character. All three of these men suffered great hardship and personal lose. They have talents that set them apart from society but are modest and really just want to fit in. They befriend those that others might look down upon (the droids for Luke, the Three Gunmen for Fox and Ron for Harry. Oops! Sorry, I mean Dobby for Harry). All three also have to undergo great personal sacrifices before they can triumph. Sorry, I could rabbit on about this idea for ages. I’m sure that those three characters just tick all the boxes in the role of the classic noble hero, but I just always group them together in my head. They all married red-heads as well!

I love the idea of SamuraiHarry. Great chapter

Author's Response: I must admit the idea of SamuraiHarry! was my prime motivation for writing this story. I blame it on watching too many episodes of ‘The Water Margin’ when I was a kid. Shih Chin rocked!

I liked the chapter. I enjoyed exploring another culture, another way of thinking, a different style of training. Some very important philosophical ideas were introduced and debated - which I think was/is good for Harry. Riku is a great character. Who knows, the great evil he has to face, could be Voldemort.... As for overprotective brothers - Harry is so out of luck. Keep up the good work.

Author's Response: In this chapter I really wanted to introduce Harry to a new way of thinking about things. In the next chapter he’ll continue down this path and he’ll even encounter a few Buddhist ideas. While this will largely mean we avoid the StroppyGitHarry! we saw in OoTP he will still have a few anger issues. And a very sharp sword. That’s not a good combination.

Amazing story so far! I really enjoyed it :) I'm still wondering about Sirius' whereabouts? About Harry's '' trip '' in Japan, I find it interesting so far, though I'm not so fond of the idea of him carrying a katana around. And about the last sentence of ch8, would that be Ron? :D Apoligies for my poor English, it isnt my first langage. Keep up the good work! :)

Author's Response: A lot of questions there, some of which I may answer ;-) We’ll be seeing Sirius surprisingly soon actually and he might have a couple of friends with him. Harry won’t be carrying his Katana around but it won’t be far away if he needs it. And as for the pratish brother…hmm, could be. Glad you’re enjoying the story and thanks for reading.

No, she's going to have 6!! Great chapter.

Author's Response: Yes, but without giving too much away it’s really just one of them that Harry’s going to have problems with. I bet you can guess which one!

Ah, and how our wishes come back to bite us in the arse, that last line will come back to haunt our Harry now, won't it? And I notice he thinks of the overprotective prat in the singular - just you wait Harry, just you wait...

Well done story, greatly appreciate you sharing your talents.

And hoo-whoo - review # 100!

Author's Response: I must admit, rather than the number of reviews I’ve been closely watching the number of people who have added the story to their favourites and that’s gone up to 100 as well. What interested me was that is 5 more than added my last story ‘the Oath’ which possible suggests this one has been better received. That’s a huge relief to me as I was a bit worried about the change in style from my last two stories. Now all I need to do is convince people to keep reading until Ginny turns up!

I liked Sensei Tamazuki from the moment Harry met him. His no-nonsense approach and the use of critical thinking will be valuable for Harry when he finds himself in difficult situations and has to make snap decisions that might have lasting repercussions.

The other part of this chapter I find very engaging is Harry's friendship with Riku. It must be comforting to him to find someone with the same sort of problem who is willing to share his knowledge and learn what Harry knows; the mutual benefits seem to be many for these two young men. It also makes me wonder whether Voldemort met his Japanese counterpart in his travels and exchanged ideas and experienced dark magic together.

I'm definitely enjoying this new phase in Harry's training and want to know more about his successes, defeats and the development of his relationships with Tamazuki and Riku. Well done.

Author's Response: I’m quite pleased how Tamazuki came out, actually. He is a bit of an amalgamation of many cinematic ‘masters’ (not Yoda though, he gets on my tits) and eastern philosophies. With Riku I just wanted to create a character that would be sympathetic to Harry and really understand him. What better way to do that than to give him a similar set of problems. The idea behind the Japanese chapters was not only to continue Harry’s training but strengthen him mentally. Having first lost his parents and more recently Nick and Perry, Harry is bound to be in a very fragile mental state. He could very easily succumb to his grief as he nearly does in canon. Here, he’s being presented with new ideas which will help face his loss and prepare him for the future. In the next chapter he will continue this and learn some valuable lessons.

Speaking of "some overprotective prat of a brother , will we get to meet Riku's sister and will Ginny appear eventualy?

Author's Response: Sadly, Riku’s beauteous little sister will not be making an appearance in this fan fic. As for Ginny…sigh…I thought I was being clever by having her only make one appearance so far. The public seem to be demanding she make an early appearance so…err, you’ll still have to wait. Sorry, the whole thing is already written and there’s no way I can really change things that much. You’ll have to grit your teeth and wait until chapter 18 (don’t worry; there’s 31 chapters in total so there will be plenty of H/G action to come).

oh harry you dont know what you have instore for you soon enought.....glad to see harry is makeing head way but will need more then an year to make it work in the end....kutgw

Author's Response: A year (which translates into two chapters) is all he has, so he’d better make the most of it.

Only one nit to pick: You twice used the word "intension" where you meant "intention." According to my dictionary, the two have totally separate meanings. Otherwise, a perfect chapter!

Author's Response: Good spot, sir! The error is now corrected, thank you.

An interesting introduction to Harry's new martial arts training. Curious how his room mate and training partner has so much in common with him, I'm wondering if that will have an impact on the story later. I'll be looking forward to reading your next update.

Author's Response: One of the things I’ve always loved about HP is its Britishness (is that a word?) but it’s always made me think about what the Wizarding word would be like in other countries. It also made me think why does a small country like Britain seem to be the hub of so much important magical activity? Are there not Dark Lords battling for supremacy elsewhere? Are strange prophesies being given in other places? I just liked the idea that there are battles similar to Harry’s going on all over the world and that he’s not unique. As it should be, each hero will have his own task so don’t worry that Harry will end up fighting Riku’s battles or vice versa. I’m sure Harry just appreciates he’s not the only one having to deal with these problems.
