Hopefully this is a turning point for Albus. Where is Ginny? Looking forward to seeing her again.

Author's Response: Ah, everyone starts asking 'where's Ginny?' about this point.

Excellent chapter.
Loved the way Harry (sort of ) got one back on Dumbledore by being able to stupefy him in the Gaunt house.
Dumbledore has a nerve keeping Harry's cloak. I can understand why as 'he is The Greatest Wizard of the time!!' (Well, maybe!). He thinks he is above everyone. He cannot do wrong. Ariana soon told him, though. Way to go girl. But, I don't think it has changed him much in any way.

Congratulations on the trinket award. This story and 'The List' both, thoroughly deserve it.

Author's Response: Thank you very much. I must admit I loved writing Ariana’s scene although on reflection maybe the line about ‘the dead watch!’ was a bit corny. I’m probably going a bit over the top with Dumbledore in this story but it sort of spiralled. I started having him do a few bad things and before you know it he’s out of control. Bad Dumbledore, no biscuit!

Dumbledore is a fool....I hope he gets his cumupance real soon!

Author's Response: Where would be the fun in that? Nasty Dumbledore has loads more evil things to do yet!

Why do I have the ugly feeling that Dumbledore engineered Harry getting kidnapped by Pettigrew? Perhaps in an effort to get the Flamels out of the way? He definitely needed to hear what Ariana had to say, unfortunately I have I feeling he didn't hear a word.

So sad about Arthur. I'm guessing that made a tremendous impact on the Weasley family. How on earth was he able to support them? I wonder what he did for work. And why was Albus not able to keep the information on Ginny's involvement quiet? And if he didn't, why doesn't Ginny know?

Author's Response: Just how much control Dumbledore had over events will become clearer in later chapters. Likewise, the story of Arthur’s sacking will be told as well. Regarding Dumbledore keeping Ginny’s involvement quiet – the whole CoS incident is written pretty close to canon, other than the events in the chamber itself. This means Ginny got the diary in the same manner, there was a public outcry at the petrifications and the school nearly closed. The only bit of Ginny’s memory that has been blocked is Harry’s involvement to help keep him hidden. There is a logic to it – would an eleven year old girl be able to keep quiet that she had meet THE Harry Potter and even held his hand? Albus obviously didn’t believe she would. The only thing Dumbledore could do was some damage control – he could prove the attacks were not Ginny’s fault as she was possessed and he could hide Harry’s involvement. But he couldn’t prove how Ginny got hold of the diary in the first place and this is what will come back to bite Arthur Weasley. Anyway, I’m interested if people will be quite so sympathetic to Arthur after they’ve read the chapter detailing the sacking. We shall see!

I am loving this story as I have loved all of your stories. I do have a question, though. It is not a loaded question -- I will continue to enjoy the story no matter your answer -- but I am curious: Is the depiction of Dumbledore in this story your "head canon" characterization, a direct result of other changes in the story, or an alternate universe element of this story that you chose as part of your premise? With most authors I can tell if they're "anti" a particular character or just exploring an interesting idea, but since Dumbledore never appeared in "The List" or "The Oath" I wasn't sure in your case.

In any case thank you for the great story, and I look forward to your next chapter!

Author's Response: I always imagined the Dumbledore in my ‘List/Oath’ stories as being a fairly benign character, which is why Harry mourned him along with all the others. This Dumbledore is kind of an exaggerated version of canon. In the books I’m convinced that Albus believed that Harry would have to be sacrificed right up until the end of HP&GF (remember when he looks up hopefully for a second when he learns Voldemort took Harry’s blood?). See also my previous review reply to Mistress_Lrigtar regarding how he could have prevented the rise of Grindelwald and Voldemort. My version of Dumbledore is like that, but multiplied by a factor of ten. He’s prepared to sacrifice anything and anyone to get the job done. Some people might say that all great leaders have to be like that to a certain degree, but here we’ll be blurring the margins of what’s acceptable.

Good chapter. Never really been a fan of Dumbledore and your version makes me like him less. Can't wait for the next chapter.

Author's Response: The Dumbledore in my story is not actually evil, but he is very controlling, manipulative and ruthless. I based him on Salisbury’s traffic wardens. Now they truly are evil!

Perhaps he'll take Ariana's rejection as an opportunity to grow up a little.

Author's Response: I think it’s more an issue of him being so controlling rather than needing to grow up. Albus just doesn’t trust anyone to get the job done other than himself and he feels he has the right to manipulate others to achieve that. Will Ariana’s words change that? I think Dumbledore is rather too set in his was to change.

Your story is bringing to light all these inconsistencies with Dumbledore in canon I had never really thought of. For example, why did he wait so long to bring Grindewald down and why did he allow Voldemort to even rise to power? It seems he had to know Voldemort was up to no good from the very beginning, so why not nip it in the bud before he can blossom into evil incarnate? And now he's worried about Harry turning dark? He'll have no one to blame for that other than himself.

Dumbledore's use of the Resurrection Stone made me think of the instances that Harry has missed out on seeing his parents - the mirror of Erised and more importantly that time in the graveyard at Little Hangleton. I think that time specifically affected Harry profoundly as it was concrete evidence that his parents loved and cared for him, and more importantly, even in death were there for him. I realize that the Flamels were a nice substitute, and Perenelle also loved, cared, and gave her life for him, but I think in order for Harry to be the well-rounded and emotionally stable person he becomes he needs to have a closer connection to his parents, as well. I hope his time spent with Sirius and Lupin can provide a bit of that. I also hope he sees Ginny again soon because I'm dying to read about their next encounter.

Thanks for the shout out. If I can be of any further assistance with the HTML issue, just let me know! I have a handy- dandy cheat sheet I refer to that covers all the basics needed for posting on this site:)

Author's Response: I’m convinced that in canon Dumbledore could have done so much more to prevent the rise of Grindelwald and Voldemort. Dumbledore admits in DH that he delayed going after Grindelwald because he feared to know the truth of which of them actually killed Arianna – in the meantime Grindelwald was building an army and Europe is plunged into war. Way to go Albus! Voldemort would have been even easier to stop. I mean, it was fairly obvious when he first visited Tom Riddle in the orphanage that the little bastard was evil. So what does Albus do – he invites him to come to Hogwarts so the boy can learn to become a fully trained wizard. Good thinking! Regarding Harry missing out on seeing his parents, he did at least have that vision of his mother in Japan. I like to think that experience would have brought him closer to her than the mirror/scene in the graveyard would have. Sirius and Remus have already been regaling Harry with stories of Lily and James and the pair will provide an important focal point for him too. As for Ginny – chapter 18 is when she will appear. Thanks for the offer regarding the HTML stuff – when Mrs B gets a free moment (damn her degree course!) she will hopefully educate me. Any problems and I will certainly cry for help. This stuff is too much for my tired old brain.

Well, that was a quick update! Brilliant chapter as always. I can't wait to see the repercussions of Ariana's speech and the destruction of the stone. Thanks for sharing!

That was a surprising turn into darkeness for Dumbledore. I did not expect it and do not know what to expect in the future. But its a good reminder that in a story where the author notes are at the top of the chapter and not at the bottom, the author reserves the right to challenge our expectations.

I do wonder about the promise to keep information confidential--it seems like that could go many ways. Like that Dumbledore can take credit in the future for any success and they cannot contradict him. Not sure about how the Arthur sacking will play out. I suspect that Harry will someday be unhappy about that decision also.

Thanks--and I look forward to reading more.

Author's Response: Note that I didn’t actually say what Dumbledore’s intentions were in uniting the Hallows beyond seeing his sister again. Was he just seeking more power or just trying to prevent Voldemort making use of the Hallows? I don’t think I’ve written Dumbledore that far from canon – I’ve just emphasised his manipulative element and downplayed his sense of compassion. He is a man who is used to others coming to him to solve problems; to the point where he now believes only he can deal with such things. The magical oath was his price for releasing information about the Horcruxes to Sirius and Remus. Albus does like to sit on information after all. The issue of Arthurs sacking will be revisited in later chapters.

WOW! So far, that was the best humbling I have read concerning Albus. Brilliant. Can't wait to see how that will affect him.

Thanks for sharing.

Author's Response: Sadly, I don’t think he’ll listen. He and Harry are bound to butt heads again, I’m afraid.

I know I already reviewed, but I was rereading the chapter. I can't believe Dumbledore allowed Arthur to be sacked - I bet his pet Death Eater still has his job. I'm rather uneasy about the vow of silence they took - that just doesn't sound like a good thing.

Author's Response: Dumbledore is very controlling and certainly doesn’t like to give out information. It could be that the oath was his price for actually allowing Remus and Sirius to know about the Horcruxes. Arthurs sacking will be covered in a later chapter – we’ll be going back to follow Ginny for a while and obviously her father losing his job will have a rather large impact on the Weasleys. Oh, but I’m telling you the plot!

lol at Dumble's chest set, so typical
liked Ariana's outburst at him too, about time someone told him some home truths (you may have noticed, but I'm not a big Dumbledore fan) :)

Author's Response: No, I’m not either, but I’m positive you guessed that by now! I’ll be coming back to the chess board imagery later in the story – it just seemed to fit the way I image Dumbledore would view the whole thing. To him people are just pieces on a board to be moved around and sacrificed as required. You could argue that all great leaders have to think that way but I would think that Dumbledore would have alternatives.

Dumbledore's a real piece of work for letting Arthur lose his job when he could have prevented it.

Author's Response: Ah, Arthurs job. I’m actually not sure Dumbledore could have prevented it. From chapter 18 we will be going back and seeing what Ginny has been up to and there will be a bit more backstory about what exactly happened to Arthur. All will be revealed then!

Fantastic! You saved APWBD and gave him a chance (however small) for redemption! And, boy, did he need taking down by an impartial witness.

Author's Response: As you might gather from my answers to the previous reviews, I doubt Mr Dumbledore will be changing his ways much. Pride and ego are terrible things in a man with as much power as him!

Well I'm glad to see someone has the guts to tell albus his sucks and needs to think more out the whole picture not his part only.....kutgw

Author's Response: But will he? There’s nothing as stubborn as an old man (especially if he happens to be a stupidly powerful wizard).

whoa. The ending chapter was intense. Curious to see what Dumbledore does from this point on. As always good sir, great update.

Author's Response: Thank you. I wouldn’t get your hopes up that Dumbledore will change much. The Dumbledore in this story really does think he knows best.
