WOW. What a chapter.
I, sort of, feel for Harry. His first kill is a lot to take. But, it is the first of many to come (including old Voldie).
I can understand his depression. The war is really getting going now and all the killing and attacks would be disheartening and frustrating.
I can't wait for chapter 18, where Ginny may bring him a little 'distraction' from the war.
Tonks being killed was a huge blow. It was sad but you can't expect there not to be any deaths in a war.
Looking forward to the next one.
Author's Response: While Ginny will be returning in chapter 18, it will be a few more chapters before she runs into Harry again (apart from in the CoS which will be retold from her perspective). Ginny has a bit of backstory which needs telling – I’ve had loads of people asking about Arthur losing his job and that needs to be explained for instance. Anyway, Harry has a lot more fighting to do before we get that far, including Harry v Bellatrix, round 2.

You can't make an omelet without breaking eggs. That's why I can't write fanfiction. You need to have great tragedy in order to expose the degree of evil the dark forces clearly demonstrate, and I just couldn't do it. I couldn't kill off Emma, or Tonks, or even Harry's parents. The characters are too precious to me, even though I know they aren't real, and that some sacrifice is required to feed the drama of the story.
So, all I can say is that it hurts to lose Tonks, but please make it worthwhile in the end. Make her death pivotal in where we go from here.
A well written battle scene. Good strategy by the Death Eaters in the secondary attack.
Author's Response: While I felt a little sad at killing off Tonks, I never thought for a moment about not doing it. The plot line just needed it to happen. The stuff I find really hard to write, or even read, is the angsty relationship stuff such as Tonksaholic or Summer Potter write. I’ve come pretty close in the new story I’m writing at the moment to doing something similar, but even now I want to go back to that scene and hit the delete button repeatedly. I’m an old softy really.

Too soon for Tonks, but it was going to happen, I think. Ouch, stomach wounds are the worst. Hope Harry will recover quickly for it. Oh, where the heck is Ginny?! :)

Author's Response: I just knew I was going to get grief for killing off Tonks. It was necessary for plot purposes I assure you. Ginny will reappear in chapter 18…you’re nearly there, be patient!

Author's Response: Very dark, but the war is picking up in pace and things aren’t going to be pretty. The next few chapters are all going to be fairly combat heavy so be prepared.

You did not just kill Tonks. You did not. Hard chapter. The realities of war are creeping in. Poor Harry, but somehow I knew that poor girl was doomed. His reactions are believable. You've done a nice job of capturing the frustration and despair of the fruitlessness of the Horcrux hunt. Nasty encounter with Bella. Oh, btw, I am suspicious of the cloak that Dumbledore returned to Harry. Meant to say that in the last chapter.
Author's Response: Oh, yes I did! This was Harry’s first real fight since returning from Japan and I didn’t want to make him some mindless killing machine devoid of feelings. He’ll become hardened to the horrors of war somewhat but I’ll never write him as someone to whom taking life comes easy. Ah, you have suspicions about the cloak, do you? Why exactly? If you’re wondering it is definitely the same one that belonged to James and not a fake. Or do you have other suspicions?

Oh my, the war certainly came full force. Very good job of showing Harry's emotions and growth through the chapter. Poor Tonks, wasn't really expecting that. On the other hand, poor Harry if it was just him and Tonks - he's in a lot of trouble. I really like your take on Sirius - he's matured from his stint in Azkaban and he is a good guardian for Harry. Sad chapter, but very, very well done. Kinda bummed I might have to vote for your story, not mine in the next trinket voting :)

Noooooooo!! I knew it'd probably happen but I wasn't quite ready for it. :( Great chapter though - things are starting to get a little tense (to put it mildly).
Author's Response: Yessssssss! I did say I would be keeping character deaths largely as per canon (with a few bonus extras in the last chapter). I’ve just messed with the order they go in quite a bit. It does mean no Teddy though :-(

I'm really glad you dispatched the Carrows, but was surprised about Tonks. Poor Remus, and now no Teddy!
Author's Response: Yeah, no Remus and Tonks so no Teddy. Sorry. I did say right at the beginning of the story that character deaths would be largely as per canon (plus a few extras in the final chapters; I got a bit carried away!) but what I have done is mix the order they met their end up in quite a bit. I suppose in canon the Carrows survive (the last we hear of them they had been captured) so they’ll count as extras. Obviously they won’t be around to spread misery at Hogwarts…but it might just be that they weren’t needed to do that anyway. Mysterious hint!

Author's Response: I felt bad killing off Tonks; she’s a great character. But I did have my reasons for dispatching her so early in the story (we’re not quite at the half-way point yet) as opposed to canon where it’s the final battle she loses her life. It will become a bit clearer next chapter.

Author's Response: I did warn everyone it was a bit grim. As you say, the war really kicks off and this version of Harry’s a bit better prepared to cope with it all. That doesn’t mean, of course, that he won’t be spending a bit of quality time at St Mungo’s now and again.
