I typically avoid fanfics that dwell on Draco redemption stories. He's just not a character I usually enjoy reading about. Yet his arc in this story has been excellent. I'm glad for him to be thrust into such an unfamiliar location with such interesting people. Looking forward to learning more about them!

Author's Response: The Draco redemption aspect of this story came about sort of as a personal challenge, as he is one of my least favorite characters in the books, I find him one-dimensional and just silly at times. But I felt once broken and discarded by the Dark Lord he might just be worth rebuilding and I have been enjoying his gradual evolution myself. He will return eventually to the main story line and I an excited to get to that point in the writing. Thank you!!

Oh well, that was a huge Malfoy chapter. Obviously there is a bit more you want to tell us about Malfoy.
I am surprised that Malfoy endures the simple life without bleating.
Torture has never changed a human into a friendlier being.
I am surprised that Malfoy is trying to distinguish the villagers by muggles, half-blood and pure bloods. I'd rather suspected that all the villagers are savages in his aristocratic world view. Even in England not every pure blood is a coequal being for him. Somehow he doesn't behave like a Draco Malfoy.
I'm curious what plans you have with Malfoy.

Author's Response: Yes it was, and there will be more of them, Draco's story will unfold in parallel for a while. I understand what you are saying about Draco's aristocratic world view. However, because we sees magic being used, and these people are essentially his rescuers he is more concerned with Wizard/Muggle dichotomy, than simply seeing all the villagers as the "others" and rendering them all "savage" in his view. Also, I am attempting to highlight the falseness of that learned aristocratic view by having Draco, when faced with a reality that is so completely different from his understanding, instinctively abandon those false structures in order to be able to examine what he is actually faced with and attempt to understand it. That shows that he is intelligent enough to look at facts rather than act on prejudices in spite of his own social programming. In short, I am letting him hit his own reset button, and start over to build himself into something new. I hope it doesn't put you off, I know I have lost readers who simply refused to accept Draco as anything but the petty character from the books. Thanks for reading and commenting! Oh, just as bit of information, I have to go on an out of state trip for the next few weeks, so I may not be around to respond for a while.

Thank goodness you've decided not to make Draco forego his ingrained prejudices just yet. His thoughts on who is who in the village certainly rang true to his upbringing. I had to smile when he conceded that Crabbe and Goyle had been idiots… his idiots. I had a good giggle when Titchi and the Healer made him get into the mud starkers and in front of half the village, no less. What a way to force a little humility on him!

However, I think the the experiences most valuable to Draco are the ones such as learning to fish from the other boys. He's learning tolerance and patience and acceptance of others who are different from him. That he was willing to learn from boys three years his junior is a big milestone for him and I hope that, when he eventually goes back to Britain, he will have internalized the lessons he's learning here, wherever "here" is.

By the way, if it was your aim to make Voldemort absolutely disgusting, you've managed that quite well.

Author's Response: Thank you for getting it! Draco can only fall back on what he knows. He was physically broken, now his learned behaviors have to be challenged and rebuilt. That will take a bit of time.
Yes, letting us see some of the true Voldemort was part of the goal. The man (and I use the term lightly) is a soulless creature and I wanted to show the creature side.
Thanks as always for the wonderful comments!

A very interesting chapter. I don't like Draco and I think he should suffer for his mistakes as he obviously hasn't learned from them. He's still focused on stupid things like blood status. It seems all he's sorry about is the loss of status. At least he shows some concern about his mother.

Author's Response: I am glad you thought it was interesting. You like many people absolutely don;t like Draco, and I understand that. Actually, It is because I don't like Draco that I have decided to take him on this particular journey... in a way to see if there is any way I bring him to a place where I do like him. As far as suffering for his mistakes... hmmm... well, yes... he first has to come to a place where he realizes them doesn't he? I have already put him through physical suffering beyond the normal human capacity at the hands of the Dark Lord. Is there a place at which you will think he has suffered enough?
Yes, he is still focused on things like blood status, because that is in a sense is his base programing, it is all he knows. He is going to have to learn a different way, and that is going to take more than a couple of chapters
Draco has a journey to take before he will be redeemed, obviously that is the goal. I do hope you will stick around and see how it unfolds Please let me know what you think along the way. And, especially, please let me know if you ever reach the place where you start to feel something more for him.
Thank you so much for your comments. Happy reading!
