There's the mushroom cloud fallout about which I was concerned as well as the political kind...

Author's Response: Ka-boom! To be fair, though, things have ramped up by this point. The massive increase in power between thermonuclear (hydrogen) weapons compared to standard nuclear bombs (such as was dropped at the end of WW2) isn't generally understood. During the cold war, there was much debate in Whitehall as to how many nukes it would take to effective destroy the UK. The figure generally accepted was 10 weapons in the 10 megaton range. Nikita Khrushchev once taunted the British ambassador that it would only take three or four bombs for the UK to cease being a functioning state. Sorry, I'm not sure this is relevant to your comment, but I though I'd mention it, anyway. A single Soviet missile submarine could have destroyed the UK - how scary is that?

Very interesting redrawing of the lines of allegiance. You have magical beings working together on an unprecedented level while the muggle are falling apart. You also have a furthering of the rift between muggle and magical. Although the body count is high this is probably about the only thing that could have woken the wizarding world up to see the true state of affairs and to get them to remodel their antiquated society. You also have the Granger's breaking their ties to reality. Not a surprising response for them considering what they have been through.

Very interesting and insightful writing. I cannot wait to read more of your work.

Author's Response: Hopefully, I've made this story believable to this point (as much as any story about witches, wizards and goblins can be, of course). This is where my secret desire to be Tom Clancy comes out.

Good chapter as always. I really liked how you used Cho in this story as a sort of before/after comparison. Very clever. I do wonder why Harry didn't just read his mind. But then again, there are villains that are very good at hiding their evil side. Just look at young Tom Riddle.

I do notice, though, that as the magicals' successes grow, the tenseness of the story thins somewhat for me. I'm not sure if I like the way this is going with WW3 on the horizon. It feels less about Harry, and more about the events themselves. But maybe that changes again in the coming chapter. Maybe it also has to do with the fact that I read this one chapter at a time, which obviously changes the way I percieve the story.

Either way, this chapter was still enjoyable. It's fun to read Mayer's day being ruined. You really did a good job on him. He's a very good villain.

I do have one question, though: where's Neville? The last time he was mentioned was in chapter 20, when the group was looking at a nuked Hogwarts.

Author's Response: Harry not using Legilimency on Cho's boyfriend was deliberate - I wanted to show that Harry had judged him purely on the fact that he was a Muggle rather than any evidence that he might turn traitor. War always hardens peoples' opinions. I did mention Neville during the riot scene - he and Hannah were part of a group operating in northern London and extracting revenge on his family home being shelled.

Author's Response: Ah, I've just remembered that the Neville bit is in chapter 24 which I haven't published yet. Err... spoilers!

Hmmm, I wanted to write this as comment to ch. 22 but didn't get around to do it, and this chapter has confirmed some of my thoughts.

First of all, I don't think any propaganda on their behalf would really help the magicals. About negotiating with the muggles, how could they ever trust thew muggles not to strike at some later time?

Attacking the infrastructure would have been my idea as well. Imagine Greater London In Summer cut off from water and electricity. Within days or even hours the government would have a whole new set of problems to deal with.

As to them ever knowing peace again, well, I'll suggest a totally outrageous solution: the magicals are going to leave the planet, leaving the muggles on their thoroughly contaminated Earth.

About the Grangers having another child: surely they must be aware of the possibility that the next child might be magical as well?

Author's Response: I'm sure the Grangers realise that their next child might be magical, but as they only really noticed a change in Hermione after she went to that 'damn school' (which is now radioactive rubble) I suspect they think that they could raise a new child differently. Outrageous solution? Hey, I'm all about outrageous solutions!

Well tiptoe through the tulips! The Ellery Queen of qintessential quests and quantified queries has qued up more literary quality! Things certainly seem to be going the Magicals and their new allies way for now! However, things have become a critical mess(mass?) on the world stage ! And that kook Mayer is still around! Love the bit with the Delacour sisters and the Merpeople - that sub commander never had a chance! Shame the muggles, including the Grangers, who seem to be writing Hermoine off, still can't see the error of their ways! Surprised the good guys haven't tried using muggle tv and radio to make their case! But then, maybe this whole thing is in Harry 's mind courtesy of Hadraniel (still waiting to see how he fits in to this)! Can't wait for the next chapter and the next round of 6NR! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Author's Response: Okay, you've totally lost me with the Ellery Queen thing. I don't think that series made it across the pond. I suspect Harry thinks that trying to reason with the Muggles is a waste of time - they will only come to the table if forced. Ah, Hadraniel. Surprisingly few people have mentioned him -he'll pop up again before the end, as well a certain ice cream salesman.

Great chapter. The world is really falling apart. Hopefully Harry and crew can put it back together. Not like they need electricity.
Coronation Street - certainly removes any residual respect for the Grangers. Yes, I've seen it. I live on the Canadian border (closer to Canada than to work) and we get their TV stations. How has the been on for so long?

Author's Response: Gah, would you believe Coronation Street has been on British TV screens since 1960! My mum used to watch it (she was a Northern lass, too) and I hated the bloody thing. Mind you, I hate all soap operas. Besides, the Grangers are dentists - they deserve everything they get.

The Magicals seem to be making a lot of progress! Harry's idea of enlisting other magical creatures to their cause was brilliant. I can easily see some countries trying to take advantage of the situation - wars seem to bring out both the best of everyone and the worst of everyone. Loved the Patriot Act for everyone! Well, we can definitely see where Granger got her lack of empathy - the last kid didn't turn out right, lets replace her. Cho's an idiot. I can understand her falling in love, but bringing him into their planning seems a bit idiotic. The number of people who have been betrayed by family, why would Harry trust a total stranger. Too many losses.

Author's Response: Yes, it's turning into a bit of a free-for-all now, isn't it? I doing my (now) usual thing of taking characters that previously no one minded and turning them into hate figures. Personally, being dentists, I think the Grangers were deserving of the treatment, anyhow.

Harry could have used legilimency on Cho's boyfriend.

So the muggles are have a go at each other now. It won't do magicals any good if they turn the planet into a radioactive wasteland.

Author's Response: Harry could have used Legilimency... but didn't. The point I was making there was that Harry judged Cho's boyfriend purely on the fact that he was a Muggle (as did Ginny and Moody). It really was an attempt to show how much Harry been changed by the war.
