Ginny Weasley was having a good time at her brother, Bill’s, wedding, until she found out the seating arrangement for dinner that is. She would be sitting between Harry and Hermione, which normally would be just great, but ever since the last day of school earlier that summer she had been trying to keep her distance from Harry. He had broken up with her then. He’d had the lamest excuse, too. It was a stupid, noble excuse of wanting to protect her. As if it would make any difference to Voldemort if she were dating Harry or a baboon. But Harry was rigid on the matter so she didn’t protest, until yesterday. She had tried to give him a good birthday present, but as usual her stupid brother had to spoil everything. She had finally worked up her nerve to kiss Harry and he was actually starting to kiss her back when suddenly Ron decided that it would be a great time to throw open her bedroom door and disturb them.

She was still furious with him about that, but she couldn’t be too mad at him now that he was going to leave tomorrow. He and Hermione were going to leave with Harry to go off and try to do who-knows-what to ultimately get rid of You-Know-Who. They were putting themselves in danger and leaving her behind. She knew that they wanted to leave as soon as possible after the wedding. She had even overheard them saying that they would leave before anyone woke up the next morning. This was going to be her last time to see them she knew it.

She remembered how it was when she and Harry were dating. It was so good that it felt unreal. She was carefree and giddy; the only thing she had to worry about was her OWLs. Now, she had so much more to worry about. She wished it could be like before.

So, in a way she was glad to be able to sit next to Harry. It would give her one last chance to be close to him. But she knew that she couldn’t stand to see him flinch away from her every time their arms bumped like he had been doing all summer. Why couldn’t he just let himself be happy one last time before he left? Would her last memory be of him pushing her away? No, she decided. She wouldn’t let Harry ruin this day for her. She would make him see.

I know that you're leavin'
As soon as the sun
Comes through the window
There's no talkin' this over
The damage is done
There's just too much hurt
Too much to forgive
Oh, we both know
We weren't always like this

She took her seat next to Harry and smiled at him. He gave her a small smile and a little nod before turning away from her toward Ron, who was sitting on his other side. She glared at the back of his head then furiously attacked her chicken with her fork. She started a conversation with Hermione and Charlie, determined to have a good time. As they all were laughing and talking she noticed out of the corner of her eye that Harry wasn’t smiling. Apparently she wasn’t the only one to notice this because Charlie said,

“Why the long face, Harry?”

“What?” asked Harry. He obviously had just been pulled out of his own thoughts.

“What’s wrong?” asked Charlie.

“Nothing,” Harry lied, giving them all a quick smile that Ginny could tell was fake. That wasn’t how he used to smile when he’d been smiling at her. His face went back to a solemn scowl as soon as Charlie turned away. Ginny sighed then said,

“Come with me, Harry. I need to talk to you.” And with that she pulled him up by his arm and dragged him away from the table into the grove of apple trees near the house.

“Harry,” she said, “Please, be happy today, for me. I can’t stand to see you like this. I realize that you’re worried and scared but please, just for tonight, forget him. Forget that we’re broken up. Please, just treat me like you did before: like you care about me.”

“I do care about you, Gin,” said Harry. “I care a lot about you.”

“Then act like it,” said Ginny. “Please, just for tonight. I want to remember what it was like. I want to have a good memory to cling on to once you leave.”

“Ginny, you don’t know how good that sounds, but-“

“But what?” she exclaimed. “Why can’t you?”

“Ginny, if Voldemort finds out-“

“I don’t give a rat’s ass if Voldemort finds out!”

He looked at her, shocked. She was a bit shocked herself. That was the first time she had ever used his name before.

“I care, Ginny,” he said softly.

“Harry, I’m in danger either way. My hand on the clock is still pointed to ‘mortal peril’ even though we’ve supposedly broken up. So, please, just for tonight…”

Help me remember
The way that we used to be
When nothin' else mattered
'Cause you were lovin' me
Just for the night, one last time
One more good memory
When I look back
That's what I wanna see

She gave him one pleading look then said, “Please, Harry, don’t fight it anymore,” and then the next thing she knew Harry’s arms were around her and he was hugging her tightly. It felt so good to be in his embrace again, like being home again, where nothing could hurt her. She just wanted to stay here forever, she thought, as she felt Harry press his lips against hers.

Oh, help me remember

Those days that were so good
Those nights that we held
Held on forever
When we weren't pretenders
We were as real as we felt
I don't want to fight anymore
Don't want the last thing I hear tonight
To be a slammin' door
Baby, let it be like before

She clung to him desperately, never wanting to let him go. She felt all other thoughts, of Harry leaving, of him breaking up with her, of having to say goodbye, leave her as the kiss continued. Nothing else mattered at that moment besides Harry, the feel of him, one hand on his neck and the other wound in his messy, black hair. And his strong arms were around her at last. She had wanted to feel them again for so long. He wasn’t pretending or hiding anything anymore. All felt right again.

Help me remember
The way that we used to be
When nothin' else mattered
'Cause you were loving me
Just for the night, one last time
One more good memory
When I look back
That's what I wanna see

Finally, they broke apart and she looked into his face. His green eyes were staring into her brown ones. He still had his arms around her waist, holding her close. She smiled at him and for the first time that summer she saw him genuinely smile back at her. She looked at him hungrily, wanting to save that image of him in her brain forever. This could be the last time that she might see him. No, she told herself. Don’t think that. Just enjoy the moment.

This could be the last time
I look in your eyes

Harry pulled her closer and hugged her to him. He stroked her back. She wrapped her own arms around him and squeezed him tightly.

“Thank you, Ginny,” said Harry, “for giving me one last happy memory.”

“Promise you’ll come back to me,” she said.

“I’ll do my best.”

“You better.”

He leaned in and kissed her again. She could feel tears stinging her eyes and roll down her cheeks. He felt them too and bent down to kiss them away.

“Don’t cry, Gin. Whatever happened to being like we were before? Come on, be happy.”

She looked at Harry then said, “I’m not sure I remember how it was before. Everything’s changed. I’m going to be the only one at Hogwarts. I’m going to miss you.”

“Then I’ll give you something to remember me by,” said Harry. He kissed her again. It was a deep, passionate kiss that left her mind empty once again. She knew that it would be hard without Harry but at least he would be leaving her with one more good memory.

Help me remember
The way that it used to be
When nothin' else mattered
'Cause you were lovin’ me
Oh, help me remember
Oh, help me, help me
Help me remember
