Harry’s New Friends

September 1st 1991

The rest of the summer seemed to pass by rather quickly for Harry and before he knew it, it was already the first of September. Harry awoke early that morning; his dreams had started to repeat themselves. He wished the dreams would have gone farther so he would know if everything turned out alright after the first year. Harry had already figured out that no matter how he did at Hogwarts the Dursley’s wouldn’t care either way.

Harry knew everything that might possibly happen during his first year and he was terrified at even the thought of facing the ‘man’ who had killed his parents.

It was around 10am when Harry began to worry that Professor McGonagall had forgotten that someone was to come pick him up and take him to the train station. As the minutes passed by Harry worried even more that he had be forgotten. For a half an hour Harry stared at the clock knowing that every minute passed was one minute more he feared he was going to miss his train.

The doorbell chimed around a quarter to 11 and Harry rushed to the door. He opened the door and there stood a man with a scarred, pale face and greying hair. Although the man had many features of an older gentleman in his mid to late forties, Harry could tell that he was much younger than he seemed.

The man smiled as he held out a scarred hand. “Harry, my name is Remus Lupin. Professor McGonagall has asked me to escort you to the train station.”

Harry stared at the man, Remus Lupin. Something about the man seemed familiar. Harry took Remus’s hand before he spoke. “Harry Potter, it’s nice to meet you. My trunk is upstairs in my room, just let me run up and get it.” Harry ran up the stairs before Remus could say anything.

Remus looked at Harry confused when he came down the stairs empty handed. “Do you need some help with your trunk?” Remus asked. Harry shook his head no before he reached into his pocket and held out a miniature trunk.

“See, Mr. Lupin I have it covered.” Harry said before heading to the door with Remus following.

“You know Harry you can call me Remus.”

Harry nodded his head and smiled. “So Remus,” Harry said trying out the name on his tongue. “How are we going to get to the station?”

“Follow me,” Remus said as he walked down the street and into an alley way. “Take my arm, Harry and hold tight.”

Harry grabbed hold of Remus’s arm and suddenly Remus’s arm twisted away and Harry tightened his grip before complete darkness and the feeling like he was being pushed through a pipe. The pressure ended as soon as it began and when Harry looked around he and Remus were not where they had begun.

“Where are we?” Harry asked looking up at Remus.

Remus looked down and Harry and smiled. “We’re about a block from the train station, but we must hurry. The Express leaves directly at eleven.”

When they arrived at the station Harry pulled out his ticket and looked at the platform number. “Nine and three quarters,” Harry read quietly to himself before looking at the platform numbers. There was five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten; but there was no nine and three quarters.

Harry was about to ask Remus if the ticket had the wrong platform when he heard a woman loudly said, “Packed with Muggles again, every year!” Harry looked over to Remus who shook his head and continued on his way.

Remus stopped directly in front of the wall between Platforms nine and ten. He leaned down and whispered, “Walk direct through this wall and you will arrive on the appropriate platform. It will be the same platform every year. Alright?” into Harry’s ear.

Nodding his head Harry squared his shoulders and stood right at the wall. When he was right in front of the wall, Harry closed his eyes before passing through the wall.

Opening his eyes, Harry was met with the most wonderful sight in all his eleven years, outside of his dream. The train was magnificent and Harry couldn’t wait to get on it and make his to his first year at Hogwarts.

“It’s great, isn’t it?” Remus said from behind him before he pulled out a pocket watch and looked at it for a moment. “It’s almost eleven, Harry, you'd better get on board.” Harry nodded before looking over his shoulder at Remus. “Listen Harry, I know we haven’t known each other for more than ten minutes, but if you have any questions about our world I would be more than happy to answer them.”

Harry wasn’t quite sure what to say to him, but agreed before getting on the train. Harry walked the train until he found an empty compartment. Harry was nervous about meeting the people who would become his friends in the future. The whistle sounded and the train started to move. Harry decided that it was probably best to enlarge his trunk.

He was just trying to get the trunk up and into the rack when the door opened and there stood a red haired boy with dirt on his nose.

“Can I?” the boy asked motioning to the seat across from where Harry’s was. Harry nodded as he gave his trunk a final push up into the rack. Before sitting down and holding out his hand to introduce himself.

“Harry Potter,” Harry said when the boy took Harry’s hand.

“Ron Weasley.”

Harry spent the next few hours getting to know the friend he had only met in his mind. Even though he thought Ron was great, he couldn’t help but think that the dreams made it seem like Ron and the girl in his year were his only friends.

About two hours into the ride the compartment door opened and there stood the slightly chubby eleven year old, Neville Longbottom. He stood in the doorway for a few moments shuffling from one foot to the other before asking, “Have either of you seen a toad?”

Ron looked at Neville for a bit before shaking his head no. Harry shook his head and said, “No, sorry.” Neville gave them a defeated look before turning to leave. “You could sit with us and I’m sure one of the professors will be able to help find him when we arrive,” Harry said as he reached out and grabbed Neville’s arm.

Neville nodded and Harry scooted over to make room for him. “Harry,” Harry said holding out his hand for his new friend. Neville smiled at Harry as he took his hand and said, “Neville Longbottom.”

Less than a half an hour later the compartment door opened and there was a young Hermione Granger, complete with bushy hair and over large front teeth. Harry couldn’t help but notice the slightly superior look about her, it was hidden behind a small mask of fear and anxiety that disappeared within moments of her arrival.

“Has anyone seen,” She stopped as her eyes fell on Neville. “Oh Neville, did you find him?”

Neville shook his head and sighed. “No, but Harry suggested we just wait until we arrive and maybe a professor could help.” She looked at Ron and then to Harry before holding out her hand and said, “I’m Hermione Granger and you are?”

Harry took her hand and introduced himself as just Harry and Ron sulked into his seat while telling her his name was Ron Weasley, his mouth still full of some of the food Harry had purchased earlier. She scrunched up her nose at him before saying it was a pleasure to meet them. She left shortly after.

The train arrived at the Hogsmeade station shortly before dark. They were met at the station by a very large man, who Harry recognized as Hagrid from his dreams. When all the first years were gathered around Hagrid, he led them over to the boat from which they got there first view of Hogwarts.
