The Marauders Map Challenge (2008-6)
The Third Challenge in the Retro Series:

In their infinite wisdom, the twins give Ginny the Marauders Map, not Harry, in her second year. She makes good use of it throughout the school year with her friends. Eventually she teams up with Harry using the map. And…she makes a discovery, seriously.

The Challenge is to write a story involving:

1. Ginny using the map to get around Hogwarts at various times of the day or night.
2. Ginny making friends with a smart but shy, large, black dog on Hogwarts grounds.
3. Ginny having a special use of the map during the Christmas holidays at Hogwarts.
4. Ginny and Harry realizing who Wormtail on the map is and its implications.
5. Ginny talks to Sirius before Harry knows.
6. Ginny in the final confrontation involving Wormtail, Sirius, and Harry.

The Rules:

1. All general submission rules apply. Stories over 10,000 words are discouraged but not prohibited. R-rated stories are allowed but discouraged. Judges are not required to read stories over 10,000 words or any R-rated stories.
2. All entries must be submitted under The Marauders Map (2008-6) sub-category under SIYE Challenge and be submitted by midnight Wednesday, December 31, 2008
3. Multiple chapters are allowed as long as all the requirements are in the chapter(s) that are submitted by the deadline. Completed stories are highly encouraged!
4. The categories for judging are Best Overall, Adventure, Secrets, and Drama.

Bonus phrases for extra creativity are the following. Using any or all of them is not required. A good, creative story will always count much stronger than any bonus.

· “There is no such thing as a free [blank].”
· “Never sniff a gift hippogriff!”
· “Why doesn’t it ever do that for me?”
· “That will put color in your cheeks!”
· “My Healer recommends that I [blank] twice a day.”
· “There’s something you don’t see every day.”
· “Because is not a reason!”

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.01 - 08:10PM to say:

Sorry, I'm late this evening. It's my parents' anniversary and I need to be on my best this time of year. So I visited them before coming home and posting the Challenge.

Torak came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.01 - 08:28PM to say:

Awww... well, congratulate them on behalf of SIYE. :-D

jennyelf came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.01 - 09:30PM to say:

This looks like a great challenge. Don't know if I'll be entering, but I look forward to reading the entries.

pippan121 came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.01 - 09:48PM to say:

"Never sniff a gift hippogriff!"? What made you think of that? Sounds like fun!

M_And came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.01 - 10:56PM to say:

"My healer recommends that I use flea powder twice a day," said Sirius with a devilish gleam in his eye. Am I done yet? Nuts! Guess I'll have to write more if I want it to be a legit entry. This could be an interesting challenge. I may need to mull this one over a few days before deciding. Has always Sir Ollivander - great idea. It'll certainly make us think outside the box. - Mike p.s. - Congrats on your folks anniversary. And by the way, you had your priorities sorted out right.

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.02 - 12:56AM to say:

pippan121--That is a play on the humorist Patrick McManus' book Never Sniff a Gift Fish. I highly recommend his books and stories. He has been the major influence for all my stories.

Sir Ollivander--I will add my congratulations to your parents. My own just celebrated their fiftieth. I hope you all had a special evening. Eric

SirTimothy came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.02 - 10:23AM to say:

'Ginny, Harry, Sirius make rat cry'... Oh darn, a month too late...

Sovran came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.02 - 01:15PM to say:

Hmm... I think the real challenge for this one would be fitting it into a reasonable length for a challenge fic. Even 20k might be a neat trick.

ginny_lola came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.02 - 02:51PM to say:

I think I may enter this, I've been wanting to enter a challenge for a while now, so I think I may give this one a shot!

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.02 - 03:41PM to say:

ginny_lola - go for it! No time like the present. It's always good for practice anyway.

Duelist came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.02 - 05:27PM to say:

Oh, that looks like fun! Hmmm.

Lesa came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.02 - 05:39PM to say:

May try to put something together after finals, but besides that this is going to be a brilliant challenge to read! Nice one, Sir Ollivander!

Yunchao came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.02 - 09:48PM to say:

Nice. I'm looking forward to seeing the stories that come out of this one.

kaedesilver came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.03 - 07:22AM to say:

I agree with Sovran, 20k would be a neat trick, this challenge has plot bunnies playing ice hockey with my brain,

Zen came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.03 - 11:53AM to say:

Having just finished NaNo, I'm a little bit hesitant about writing for this...but it does sound like an interesting challenge, so I might just give it a shot. :)

ginny_lola came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.03 - 02:24PM to say:

Yep, I have now officially started writing it!

Yunchao came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.03 - 11:54PM to say:

I agree with the people who are saying that it'll stretch the word limits. There would need to be some sort of relationship development in there and we all know that takes time. I'm sure the other judges won't mind much, I know I won't. Good luck authors!

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.04 - 07:59PM to say:

You all know you can write over 10k words if you need to, right? If your story is that good and it needs 15-20 thousand words to tell it, go for it. I'd rather read a good, long story than an average, short story.

ginny_lola came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.05 - 02:25PM to say:

Oh that's OK then! I was worried, it just seemed really hard!

M_And came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.05 - 04:13PM to say:

I couldn't help but notice all the hullabaloo over the issue of story length. I don't mean to sound harsh, but isn't the idea of a challenge to be...well...challenging? Isn't the idea to make us think outside our comfort zones and be creative? There are lots of of literary devices that could be used to fit all the requirements in with in the 10K word limit. I apologize if that seems tough, but I guess I must be looking at this differently. - Mike PS - Good look to all the authors who enter!

jvan71 came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.05 - 08:31PM to say:

This may be a stupid question, but I've never participated in a challenge before other than the Hemingway Six one. Does the story have to have all of these or do we choose one? 6. Ginny in the final confrontation involving Wormtail, Sirius, and Harry.

sanidad came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.05 - 09:19PM to say:

jvan71 -- In order to be a valid entry, your story must incorporate all six elements that you listed. The seven quotes are optional; your story may include from zero to all seven of them. Good luck!

jvan71 came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.05 - 09:25PM to say:

Got it! Thanks sanidad! I have a couple ideas, just have to see if I can manage to incorporate all 6 of those elements.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.05 - 11:13PM to say:

jvan71 - the idea of the Challenge is to use all the requirements in the story. However, we have had some great stories whereas an author has left out one or two of the requirements and still came out with a prize-winning story. I'm not really strict with the rules but try to meet all thr requirements.

Victor Aagaard came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.06 - 06:45PM to say:

piltad came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.07 - 05:00AM to say:

I personally say longer the better. Seems like a few of the people out there are scared to write them to long. I can promise I will read them at least. :) Can't wait to see what comes from this it is rewriting cannon and those and dark stories are my favorites.

NotACat came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.10 - 07:07AM to say:

I'm slightly worried that you feel it necessary to discourage an "R" rating for a fic set so early in canon: what on earth opportunities did you think people might find to write anything which required that?

sanidad came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.10 - 09:32AM to say:

NotACat -- That rule is standard for all the challenges, not just this one, so it wasn't written with this particular challenge in mind. It probably wasn't written with any particular challenge in mind.

Lesa came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.10 - 03:31PM to say:

Also I think R can deal with gore/violence/language, not just sex.

Torak came out of the woodwork on 2008.12.12 - 12:48PM to say:

Some would argue that violence needs ratings more than sex does. And yes, I'd be one of them.
