Old and Inactive Memberships
While doing some maintenance on SIYE, we have found a number of old membership accounts. We have listed them in two categories:

One-shot Memberships: a person signed on to SIYE and created a membership account and then NEVER logged on again.

Inactive Members: regular members that have not logged onto SIYE in a very long time.

SIYE is looking at membership accounts that have this inactivity for over 24 months. There are about 3,000 of them, inflating our real membership numbers on SIYE. These same members have no stories posted. We carefully checked that one issue.

Therefore, we are going to remove these inactive accounts in one week, Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009. If you are one of these members and don’t wish to have your account removed, you just have to log onto SIYE. If, in this process, we have made an error and removed an active account, you can always re-register and become a member again. But our techs have been very careful to ensure the statuses of these accounts so we don’t make such a mistake.

No stories, complete or otherwise, will be deleted. We will not remove any stories.

It means that inactive members with stories posted won't be deleted, right? There are a lot of fics which would be lost forever...

Frozen: If an inactive account has a story posted it will not be deleted. NO stories will be deleted

@Bear: Thank you!

Frozen - that was our one main concern. No stories will be lost. Those inactive member accounts with stories will stay! We have some terrific stories from authors from 2003-2005 but have moved on to other interests. Their accounts, and therefore their stories, remain with us.

Could we extend the deadline until Dec 31st? I don't think my first chapter will be ready by then because of finals...

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2009.12.12 - 10:23PM to say:

mewells - the simple fact that you logged onto SIYE to write this Comment means that you are not going to be deleted. We are only deleting member's accounts that have not been accessed in over 24 months.

i can't figure out how to delete accounts. i had two that i wanted to get rid of but i'm unable to figure out how to...

iloveyou2death - If you haven't logged in since 2007 they will automatically be deleted.

I think this is a good idea.... But will this delete the stories they have written?

Professor Scroll came out of the woodwork on 2009.12.13 - 03:46PM to say:

hot48cricket None of these accounts have stories on them, so no stories will be deleted.

My live-in computer expert (I give her neck rubs, and in return she keeps my laptop from crashing) tells me that this weeding process could free up server memory and make the system work much better. Of course, Kathy has also suggested that I delete all my stories to both save computer memory space and spare the world from my puns.

I am trying to be a good lurker by logging in for a change. Please spare me oh mighty techs!

omega13b came out of the woodwork on 2009.12.16 - 03:40AM to say:

One of those inactive accounts if from my first attempt to register an account (that was like 2 years ago). For some odd reason, I never got the confirmation email. Knowing how this site's email behaved back then, it probably didn't get sent... I've been meaning to ask but I keep forgetting, is it possible to have my pen name changed to omega13a like how I'm known elsewhere without having to redo my favorites and repost the story I've posted? omega13a was the pen name I wanted but because I didn't receive a confirmation email for that account, I had to settle with omega13b...

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2009.12.16 - 02:14PM to say:

omega13b - let me ask our techs before I do anything dangerous. Give me a couple days, please.

sanidad came out of the woodwork on 2009.12.16 - 10:57PM to say:

I just thought of something... I can think of a couple instances where someone got an account just so they could leave a nice review for a story that they enjoyed, but then never used the account again. If those accounts are deleted, will their reviews be deleted as well?

Bear came out of the woodwork on 2009.12.17 - 04:09AM to say:

sanidad: No reviews will be deleted. All that will happen is the link from the review to view the users profile will vanish, but the review itself and the name attached to the review will remain

hgromance came out of the woodwork on 2009.12.20 - 04:26PM to say:

this is great but I wish you could take it a step further. I've noticed there are LOTS of unfinished stories that are several years old. It's too bad you can't delete them and free up more space for those who are currently writing and updating their stories at least semi-regularly. (I'm talking stories that haven't been updated since 2000 or even earlier)

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2009.12.20 - 07:16PM to say:

hgromance - It is SIYE's policy not to delete any stories if at all possible, even if they are not completed. However, I have an aggressive program to inform authors that they have incompleted stories over TWO years old. A few will update them. A few will ask to have them removed, which we will. But the vast majority of them, about 300-500 a year, will not respond. After two months of notification, I post a NOTICE in the stories' summary stating...

*** The author has been reminded via the e-mail address on file that this story is listed as incomplete and has not been updated since (YEAR) ***

Currently, that is the best that we can do. We are always trying to find a better way to handle this problem.

hms42 came out of the woodwork on 2009.12.26 - 04:48PM to say:

How did the purge go?

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2009.12.29 - 09:59AM to say:

hms42 - the purge went well, especially if you haven't noticed. That was the point. About 6,000 membership accounts were removed. Mostly very old accounts which were abandoned and one-shot members who never logged back on a second time. Also a few other odds and ends that were found, an orphaned chapter here and a no-account story there. Otherwise we're all satisfied. Abandoned, uncompleted stories is next on the radar. But they will NOT be deleted.
