And The Winners Are....

You’ve all waited long enough for it, one would think the baby would have been born by now. But that’s anotherr story. Now is the time to celebrate the winners of our song fic Challenge. They varied across the board in many ways. Different people, and authors, have different ways to celebrate and discuss this blessed and “romantic” event. We had ten judges pouring over ten stories. One author pulled his or her story out of the running early in the judging. And now the results…

The award for Best Overall goes to:

The winning stories are now prominently listed in our Featured Stories section. Those of you that have multiple chapters or need to do some editing may continue at this time. The Challenge category is back open. If your story is completed, please ensure it is edited and YES, as completed.

The 2010-2 Challenge is coming shortly. Where would you go?

I would like to thank my many judges who worked hard for this Challenge: AM, BG, CP, GC, IV, JG, JS, NSL, RS, & ZA. You know who you are. Thank you very much for all that reading and judging. It wasn’t easy this time around. The Challenge would not exist if nobody judged them.

Some authors have asked if I would tell them how well they did in the judging. If you wish, e-mail me and I will tell you your results.

I would looove a fanfic where Harry and Ginny take baby Albus to visit / introduce him to Snape's portrait in Hogwarts. Maybe Harry hasn't ever visited the portrait until that day? See Snape and Dumbledore's reaction to the naming of his son after them. I haven't read any fanfics about this, and think it would be a nice touch. :)

Bones, I'm not sure why the Quidditch thing matters, either. My own reasoning for her still playing was that (based on the canon dates) she can be no more than 23 years old when she conceives. -N-

The reason it matters is that all the authors except a very few wrote it the same way... I would have liked to have seen some variety in the way the stories were written like A Walk to Life By st122. I would have loved to have seen more AU stories...

I think that is because of the nature of the challenges themselves. If you want to fulfil all the requirements they do end up being written in the same way. I don't think that Ginny was or was not playing Quidditch is what made the authors write it the same way. As Northumbrian notes - there's not a lot of time between her starting Quidditch and getting pregnant. If you choose not to write AU the most likely scenario is that she is still playing when she gets pregnant. I think sometimes when you want a different type of story it comes down to writing it yourself. As an author can't read minds, I don't know what others find tiresome I can only write what occurs to me.

All right lets try it this way... If she is 23 when she conceives that means she's been playing for... six years... Now if you pay attention to sports then you'll notice that people who participate in the so called rough sports generally do not have a long playing time. Rowling herself has admitted that Quidditch is a brutal sport, so that leads me to believe that a player would not be playing that long. She has also said that Ginny played a "few" years depending on how you interpret that six years is a long time. I see her quitting after four years. Remember Rowling has also said Ginny quit because she wanted to started a family with Harry not because she got pregnant. Although that kind gets thrown out the window if you do not believe her interviews are canon.

Not every challege or challenge story is going to be able to fit into canon. Yes, I suppose that the story could have been written so that Ginny gets pregnant after she quits Quidditch and is actively trying for a family with Harry but, like Kezzabear said, you can only write what comes out. You can't force yourself to write a story which fits into canon all the time. I'll admit, it occured to be to write the story after Ginny had finished playing but for some reason it wouldn't come to me that way, although I agree that completly AU stories such as A Walk To Life made reading the stories more interesting and not all the same.

In the actual universe Ginny is not still playing when she conceives. It's not clear in the one shot about it but in my head she isn't. I don't think you can say how long the life of a Quidditch player is. Gwenog Jones attended Hogwarts last in 1986 - as she was still at Hogwarts when Sliughorn was there - and is the captain of the Harpies in HBP - so a decade later. I find it doubtful she began playing at about 23. I guess all I'm trying to point out is that the only way to have all the ducks lined up as you want them is to write it. It's equally as likely that Ginny is still playing when she conceives as not. Clearly a Quidditch player has a possible decade long career. A few is not definitively less than six and not everyone interprets it the same. I think it's just unfair to expect things of others based on your own expectations. I think in a gift fic you can expect that but as a challenge fic it's better to graciously accept the scenarios that the authors tried to present. As I've previously mentioned - challenges lately have been prescriptive and I think that's the reason for them all to come out similarly. The real challenge in SYE challenges is to write a story with originality IMO.
