Three Little Words Challenge (2011-1)

“Without thinking, without planning it, without worrying about the fact that fifty people were watching, Harry kissed her,” (HPB Chapter 24).  So it began…for Harry, Ginny…for all of us who were cheering as we read this most famous of scenes.  It begs the question, however, as to when did our hero actually utter those three little words to her: “I love you.”

The Challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write a story describing events leading up to the scene, his actually saying it, and, naturally, Ginny’s reaction.  It is safe to assume that Harry tells her before James, Albus and Lily come along.

Suggestions and food for thought:

● What kind of difficulties does Harry have in admitting his true feelings to himself…to Ginny?  Maybe it’s not difficult at all?

● Is it a planned event (i.e. a romantic supper), spontaneous (i.e. in the heat of battle), or maybe even accidental (i.e. he tells a sleeping Ginny—who really isn’t), or something else?

● Does Ginny react with surprise, disbelief, laughter, anger, tears…another epic kiss?

● Is Ginny frustrated with Harry for not having said it yet, patiently confident that he will eventually, or perhaps, despite the Common Room kiss, unconvinced about how he feels?

● Are Hermione and Ron encouraging Harry to tell her, reluctant support (at best), or maybe clueless about his feelings?

Rules:

● All general submission rules apply.  Stories over 10,000 words are discouraged, but not prohibited.  R-rated stories are allowed, but discouraged.  Judges are not required to read stories over 10,000 words or any R-rated stories.

● All entries must be submitted under the Three Little Words Challenge (2011-1) subcategory of SIYE Challenges, and must be submitted by midnight Monday, February 28, 2011.

● Multiple chapters are allowed as long as all the requirements are in the chapter(s) that are submitted by the deadline.  Completed stories are seriously preferred.

● The categories for judging are Best Overall, Most Romantic, Most Humorous, and The Luna Prize (for most unusual).

Bonus phrases for extra creativity are the following.  Using any or all of them is not required.  A good creative story will always count much stronger than any bonus.

● “That’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard apart from [blank].”

● “Death Eaters and Dementors are bad, but [blanks] really scare me.”

● “Naked Wizards have contributed very little to Magical civilization.”

● “You’ve never heard of [blank]?  Well, they’ve never heard of you either.”

● “They’d never write a book about Harry.  Who would read it?”

● “Don’t just stand there!  Kiss her you idiot!”

This Challenge is intentionally wide in scope, and with few restrictions, but therein lies the possibilities and the fun.  I actually have a friend who first told his girlfriend he loved her while up in a hot air balloon, and another who admitted it to his future wife while doped up in a post-operative ward (and later had no memory of having said it).  I first told my wife during a pillow fight.  How will Harry do it?

I would like to thank Sir Ollivander for allowing me to develop this romantic theme just in time for Valentine’s Day.  Naturally, having had much more time to build a story, I won’t be including my own submission in the Challenge competition itself.  Great luck to everyone!  Now let’s break out those quills.

Mischief managed!

There are too many paths! Get me out of here! Do I go with something fluffy and sweet, or go the route of somewhat zany comedy. I've got two stories forming here. Good thing I don't have Uni this month.

Oh well, as my story of those events is written (in Aurors and Schoolgirls, I'll wait for the next challenge. Why did I think that this might be a story about four words - "will you marry me?" Never mind. -N-

I may actually enter this one...whether or not it'll be dark or romantic and fluffy is anyone's guess though. Oh, great, plot bunnies galore!! ~Soraya~

babewithbrains came out of the woodwork on 2011.02.01 - 05:15PM to say:

I just wanted to ask if it could be the other way round--Ginny saying I love you to Harry? I think that would be more interesting for me...but of course if that's in violation of the rules I won't do it.

Spenser Hemmingway came out of the woodwork on 2011.02.01 - 05:34PM to say:

babewithbrains---The story does have to be about when Harry says it to Ginny...but that doesn't mean she can't say it to him first. That could be really good fun in fact---a flustered, tongue-tied Harry, for example, trying to get the words out after she's admitted her feelings first. It sounds as if you have some great ideas.

This Challenge does have a great deal of latitude. The only carved in stone conditions are that you describe/include the first time Harry says those three little words to Ginny, the events leading up to such and her reaction to hearing him say it. That's pretty wide open, as is our intention.

Great luck to you! Eric

are multiple entries allowed?

OK, thanks for clarifying!

Lazy Lazuli---Multiple entries are indeed permitted, as are multiple chapters to a single story.
