Buried Gems 01-2018

The first story in the new Buried Gems series is the very first fanfiction story I've ever read. Okay, that's not quite right, it's the second since the first fanfiction story I've ever read was the German translation of this story.

I'm talking about Melindaleo's The Seventh Horcrux.

The Seventh Horcrux continues where HBP ended. The story has been published before DH. To my knowledge, the story was even traded in the internet as the leaked copy of DH. I'm not sure if this is just a legend because I started reading fanfiction about 8 years after The Seventh Horcrux had been released in 2006.

What is The Seventh Horcrux about? I think the summary explains it very well:

The hunt for the Horcruxes begins. Harry has to decide who to trust as he moves closer to fulfilling his destiny. Will he be able to find and destroy all the Horcruxes? And at what price? Will he be able to find the strength within himself "the Power the Dark Lord Knows Not" in order to succeed in vanquishing Voldemort? And, can he do it and still get the girl? Join Harry and his faithful friends on their quest to finally defeat a Dark Lord.

I remember very well that the 'and still get the girl' immediately caught my attention. Would Harry really ask Ginny to take him back?

Why do I like the story so much...and where do I start without giving too much away?

Well, the first reason is that I think the story is very well written, I immediately felt transported back to the Harry Potter universe. The second reason are the many little loving details that, to my astonishment, had many similarities with things I've read in DH, although the plot is very different from DH. The most important reason, however, is that Ginny plays a much bigger role in The Seventh Horcrux than in DH.

Of course, there is also a Horcrux hunt in The Seventh Horcrux, and, of course, it is completely different than in DH, which is understandable considering that DH was released later.

I don't want to reveal too much, but (spoiler alert!) in the end Harry wins against Voldemort, and...oh, I can't remember...did he really get the girl?

What do you think about The Seventh Horcrux?

Oh, and please don't hesitate to correct me if I wrote something wrong.

And what is your favourite buried gem? Just send me a PM with a short description of the story.

So Gin110881 had tipped me off a few days ago about which story he intended to lead with.

I swear I did, nearly physically, bite my tongue yesterday when ML offered her cheery support!

Anyway, it is true that many of us first stumbled on a HPFF story by chance. If that first story happened to be a good one, then chances were pretty good that we were hooked. No surprise that someone whose first HPFF exposure was 'The Seventh Horcrux' would then be off on a many-year voyage of fanfic discovery.

Fine choice!

Yeah, I know what you mean. My eyes popped out when I read her message. The only concern I had regarding The Seventh Horcrux was that I was afraid everybody knows the story, and it turns out, the gem wasn't as buried, as it was supposed to be, lol.

Well I've read a lot of stories but I've never read that one - I only recently read Curse Of The Damned by the same author. I feel like I'm missed out now lol...shall have to go and read it

Sovran came out of the woodwork on 2018.04.25 - 10:43AM to say:

It is 100% true that The Seventh Horcrux was once passed around as a leaked copy of Deathly Hallows. I remember finding news articles about it even after I heard about it through the HP online community. Fantastic choice!

I meant Power Of Emotion, CotD is the sequel

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2018.04.26 - 02:41AM to say:

Yeah, PoE and CotD were the third and fourth fanfiction story I read. I thought about mentioning them here but decided to keep them for a later edition of the Gems...

I'm half way through Seventh Horcrux now - glad this has given me the push to read it :)

alterdream came out of the woodwork on 2018.04.27 - 09:26PM to say:

I think I'll have to reread it now. It's been so long I can't remember much, although I'm sure it will come back while reading. I'll try to dig up a few suggestions too :)

melindaleo came out of the woodwork on 2018.04.30 - 08:44PM to say:

Oh my God!! I just happened to click on here tonight and my mouth dropped open. No one even told me! Am I really a hidden gem when I'm still here? Thank you very much for the kind words. It is true that this one was stolen and passed around - even sold in several countries, but it also brought me my 15 minutes. I got to be interviewed by the Leaky Cauldron and also got contacted by JKRs publishing agent over the whole thing. It was very exciting, and I still have a scrap book of all the newspaper articles, lol.

melindaleo came out of the woodwork on 2018.04.30 - 08:50PM to say:

As for recommendations, two oneshots that I've always enjoyed coming back to are: Gowdie's "Something Gold" and Professor Scrolls "Bullseye." I'd also like to mention an author and former administrator here - Jacquelyne. She was a wonderful friend, and I still think of her fondly. She left us too soon. Any of her wonderful stories would be great.

Gin110881 came out of the woodwork on 2018.05.01 - 03:33AM to say:

When I was asked to oversee of the buried gems, I immediately knew what story I would start with, as it is a real gem. However, I agree with you that, although you are certainly a gem, you're not a hidden gem as it's quite obvious that many SIYE readers still enjoy reading your stories.

Sir Ollivander came out of the woodwork on 2018.05.08 - 10:34PM to say:

I agree with Gin110881. Yes, Melindaleo, you are a gem. I remember reading your stories when I first started with SIYE. I even removed some harsh Comments about your "stolen" story. And that was quite a while ago. Also, Jaq's stories are still worth reading. Thanks for bringing it up. Tom

A Different Beginning by Breanie...definitely worth a read

Breanie is already on my list.
