LOL well I was pissed Snape ruined this moment but the I do expect a truly great chapter next go around since Draco was finally stupid enough to attack Hermy though do like it being Hermy since I think if it was Ginny might not have a Draco Char. to play with anymore.

I just spent the last two days reading all of the Grey Maiden series, and I congratulate you on creating a captivating and intricate universe. I was rather skeptical at the beginning due to the premise of Harry being raised by an elite ex-Auror, but it only took a couple chapters for me to recover from my stereotyping. Your Slytherin!Harry is probably one of the most convincing I've seen, and I admit I really felt bad for him before he met Hermione, and even afterward when he realized she was alienating her whole house for him. I thought it was interesting how you switched Ron's hate of Draco over to Harry, and conflict between the Weasley and Malfoy families has been downplayed. The way you've played his arrogance is intriguing - its more of an unconscious personality trait than the bluster of Draco or Ron. Draco is a nice foil to Harry and shows that not all Slytherins are the same, as even Rowling suggests at times.

While I was reading the first installment of this series, I must admit I was hoping for Ginny to get sorted into Slytherin. With the series being on SIYE, I wondered if you would do the cross-house Romeo and Juliet thing with Harry and Ginny, but I think the way you've built their friendship first (based a lot on Ginny's need to fit in to a house that hates her) was very well-done.

The thing I find most fascinating about this series is how you've worked in the pure-blood culture. This may be a fault of my own story selection, but I've never read a story where the politics of wizarding society have played any major role other than providing an enemy for Harry and his allies to fight. While sometimes it gets a little weird having two important characters named Daphne, I think Harry's introduction to the pure-blood society through the Greengrass family was very well done, and provides a dimension to the Harry Potter universe that I've never explored before. That aspect of the story alone makes it worth reading, even though it's only one of your major plotlines.

I read in one of your author's notes at the beginning that this story would be dark, and yet, you still caught me by surprised with actually how dark it is. I expected you meant violent dark, with dark magic being used a lot and Death Eaters being at the power level they should be at(Rowling was terrible at portraying the fear the Death Eaters were supposed to produce), but it's also psychologically dark as well. I expected something like Snape's attempted rape of Lily (not necessarily with those people, but the idea), but I didn't expect the darkness ripping away Harry's childhood in such a brutal fashion, nor your excellent (and perhaps horrifying) descriptions of it. Sirius has a very valid reason to get Harry away from Daphne - she gave him his eleven years of childhood, but the last six have been taken from him as she's started to fashion him into a living weapon and a leader of the wizarding would. It's painful to read what's happening to his childhood even if he embraces his destiny - a fourteen year old shouldn't be thinking like a war marshal just yet, even if it is his destiny. I'm glad that he's got Ginny around to ground him - without her, he might be like Hermione and on edge all the time, and lose any chance he has at retaining even a bit of his innocence. It's much more realistic and adult-oriented than the original Harry Potter books, and that's part of why I find this universe so spellbinding.

As far as Darkness Rising goes, it'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Draco is about to get his, which I'm looking forward to, and I'm really interested to see where Giselle is going. I'm assuming that she is the girl that Voldemort was talking about in Harry's dream, but I can't figure out what plan the Dark Lord might have for her. I'm also assuming that Crouch is still impersonating Moody (due to hints you've dropped), so I can't figure out why Voldemort would need another girl, a student even, to go to Hogwarts and be near Harry. Perhaps having Daphne there complicates things a bit and Voldemort needs a more solid plan. The meeting between Harry and the Russian twins is also interesting - I'm looking forward to see where that is going as well.

Very nice work on this story and the whole series as well - I'll be following it until the end.

Author's Response: Thank you for that very long and comprehensive review. It really seems like you've grasped most if not all of the essential elements of the story. The thing takes me in interesting directions at times, but I've got some pretty good stuff planned for the future.

great chapter

he start with the hogsmead vist was well handeled as was the confortation between draco , hermione & harry & your doing a good job of slowly building up the tension between the two slytherines.

The dark ritual that harry attended was very atmospheric & the introduction of Nikolai and Natasha has defenatly got me intrested as to how these two carecters will come into play in later chapters.

The ball itself was very well written & i loved how harry was able to forget about his destiney & just concentrait on ginny & having a good time the the kiss at the end completly impulsive but fits the charecters & how they fell about each other perfectly. of course thes light romatic momnets are propabley going ot be few & far between in the upcoming years but in some way this just increses how speciial thes monets will be to harry & ginny.

The scean between ginny & ron was very well handeled particuler the fact that harry let ginny handel the situation which would have helped with her self confidence, also the fact that her parent obvasley aprove of her relationship with harry & her rather blunt warning to ro should hope fully begin to convience ron that harry is not some dark wizzard whos corupted his younger siste (of course if the second task is even close to how it is in cannon then i cant see ginny close association with harry being quite a smoth as they both hop it will be).

The shock ending with the attack on hermione & harry in my opion jumping to the conclusion thats it draco was a very nice ending to the chapter though i do have my doubts as to who actually carried out the attack as draco may be arogant but he is not stupid & attacking hermione after harry blunt warning plus the fact that iam sure krum will be less than pleased to her that his date was attacked leads me to belive that it was some one else whos decided to set up draco altough i have no idea who.

Anyway looking forward to the next chapter & maybe some answers

James

Author's Response: I'm not even going to bother hiding it: Draco, or more specifically, Crabbe and Goyle, beat up Hermione. Draco thought that it might intimidate Harry. He might eventually be dangerous, but right now he' s too arrogant and spoiled to grasp how desperate and stupid his actions really are. That said, he'll be no pushover in a duel, and who knows, if he gets his arse kicked, that might serve as a little wakeup call.

Eeh, was good.
A few typos, though, I think it's Thestrals, not Threstrals, for instance.
Great writing, as always.

Very interesting chapter, especially the part from Edmond Dressler. What does it all mean? Also i really enjoyed your Harry/Ginny scenes, keep up the good work.
P.S Also i noticed at this mistake i think, “Zabini,” he said in greeting. “Didn’t expect to see you here. I didn’t realize you were friends with Blaise’s family.” “We aren’t,” Greengrass replied curtly. Should it not be 'I didn't realize you were friends with Daphne's family".

Author's Response: I think I fixed that. Yeah, a few typos here and there. Happens when I get really excited, as I was while I was writing that scene.

Great chapter, I really liked the ritual, and the ball was done wonderfully. Malfoy is in for it though, Can't wait for the next chapter.
