Reviews For Summer Story

Reviewer: Gin110881 Signed Date: 2015.05.11 - 05:58AM Title: Chapter 3: Working with Dudley

This is the friendliest Dudley, about whom I have ever read. So far, I really liked the new relationship between Harry and Dudley. Let's see what is still waiting for us here.

Author's Response: I'm glad you like the friendlier Dudley. I do too.

This is the friendliest Dudley, about whom I have ever read. So far, I really liked the new relationship between Harry and Dudley. Let's see what is still waiting for us here.

Author's Response: I can tell you now that the tentative friendship between Harry and Dudley will become important to the rest of the story. The two may only have Harry's rehabilitation in common, but at least it's a start, right? Thanks for reading.

Thanks...I found your last response very satisfactory. It felt like we were both thinking along the same lines and that's pleasing because it makes me feel I'm understanding where you are coming from.

I laughed when I read about Harry grumbling to himself that Dudley sounded like Madam Pomfrey! I have actually started taking notes as I read and I laughed even more as I made this particular note!:)

This chapter seemed to be about the relationship between Dudley and Harry. It would have been way too far fetched for Dudley to have stood up to his friends and demanded they leave Harry alone (and then followed through when they didn't) but given his past behaviour he has showed great promise in this chapter. His involvement in Harry's rehabilitation looks to be very beneficial.

Author's Response: Oh... notes! I like readers who take them because the discussions are always a lot of fun as a result. You're right about the theme of this chapter being Harry and Dudley's changing relationship. I wanted Dudley to have a private side that only Harry sees as well as a public side which is more of a remnant of who he is/was to his friends in canon at the beginning of books 5 and 6. The private side shows how Dudley's maturing while the public side still retains his vicious, immature qualities; therefore, even though Dudley knows bullying Harry was wrong, he goes along with his friends to some extent, fading into the background to do what he can to protect Harry without arrousing the suspicions of his friends. And yes, he's definitely taking charge of Harry's rehabilitation because somehow he suspects that Harry won't take care of his injury without someone like Madam Pomfrey breathing down his neck! Thanks for your thoughtful review.

No this was a really GOOD chapter. I think the way you have Dudley is very likely, Petunia seems a litttle kindlier than I would have expected, but not implausibly. My take on that is thet she will do what Dudley wants. Liked the idea of her taking her frustration out on the rose bushes! I'm now wondering what the owl delivered. The park confrontation was really well handled, too. The sort of cleft stick Dudley is in is really well drawn. Thanks, SF

Author's Response: Thanks for the great review. You're absolutely right that Petunia could have been a little nastier. Unfortunately, nasty is not one of my strong points: all the negative characters are hard for me to write, but I'm getting better as I make myself write them. As for the rose bushes, I feel rather sorry for them! Oh, the owl delivery... Madam Pomfrey is keeping tabs on Petunia's treatment of Harry and the owl brought some papers for her to sign. Finally, Dudley is going to have some decisions to make later in this story and if you keep reading, you'll see just how he's maturing. I'm glad you thought the park scene was acceptable. I look forward to your next review.~~Arnel

wow, I would never have believed that if I hadn't read it
I hope he stands up for Harry again when he needs it
I've always though, even in the books, that Harry has got to be one of the most stubborn characters - never knowing when to stop for his own good

Author's Response: Ol' Dudders actually seems quite human when you get him away from his parents and their prejudices. And oh, yes, Harry is as stubborn as they come sometimes. Thanks for commenting. ~Arnel

Sorry I never put up a comment before, but having changed computers (not by choice...a crash had a bit to do with it) I lost all of SIYE and ff.net. I just found this one, as it came up on 'most recent'.

An odd concept. Dudley actually helping Harry, yeah? A smoking boxer has a lot to learn about his OWN health.

I have no idea where you're taking this story, but the ride should be worth it!

Darian

Author's Response: I'm very glad you found my story and are interested in reading more of it. I wanted Dudley to mature slowly and helping Harry seemed like a good place to start. I hope you enjoy the rest fo the chapters I have up. Oh, by the way, Congratulations! This review is the 100th for this story and I'm glad you decided to review.

I don't know why DumbOldDork is so retarded he thinks that this is a good environment for Harry to recover in! He's not even safe from muggles there, and isn't even being guarded.

Author's Response: Thank you for your thoughts. Harry was originally only going to spend a few days at the Dursleys, but due to circumstances beyond the Order's control, it was not practical to move Harry without great danger to him or his minders. And yes, he did have minders: at least one person, whether it was Mrs Figg or someone else, was on duty at all times; if you read carefully, Tonks says so near the end of the chapter. Thank you for reviewing... By the way it's not nice to call people names, no matter how much you disagree with them.

I suspect Ginny may not be happy to hear about the later events in this chapter..... :-} But yeah, I can see that Dudley couldn't easily tell his (former) "friends" to go bugger off. And maybe someone can point out to Big D that smoking isn't especially likely to improve his athletic abilities (well, unless he has some in mind that don't involve breathing).

[Sorry about the delay; spent about 3 weeks with only intermittent Internet access, and that was only at work.]

Author's Response: You'll see Ginny's reaction to the events in this chapter in Chapter 4. In the meantime, Harry and Dudley are trying to improve their relationship and maybe some day Harry'll feel bold enough to remind Dudley that smoking is bad for his health! Thanks for reviewing.

soory for not review the last chapter i did nto see an update and now i did ....strange how things work out int he end but having dudley nice is still creapy and all....but it should help get harry better and may help ginny soon to....kutgw

Author's Response: It's no problem that you didn't review last chapter. Whenever you have the time to leave one is great. I'll admit that having a "nice" Dudley is a little strange to me, too, but that's how JKR wrote Dudley's maturing character in DH. And yes, having someone on his side while he's staying at the Dursleys will help Harry heal faster. You'll see Ginny next chapter. Thanks for reviewing.

Hi Arnel, I really like how you're exploring Dudley and Harry's maturing relationship. It's not one dimensional, where D is suddenly a wonderful, sensitive bloke. Here, you're showing two teens taking steps forward and backward, as is typical of that age. Very well done!

I'm sure you intended to parallel the mindless bullying of Dudley's crew (though you cast suspicions about how long he will stay with them) with the Death Eater's Muggle activities. Safe to say, the gang's actions were irritating, but D's again were revelatory. Loved Mrs. Figg's involvement!

Even though this was your longest chapter yet, it read very quickly and easily. Next, please! -- Jim

Author's Response: Jim--My goal for this fic is to have all the chapters at twelve pages and under. To tell the truth, I can't see Harry ever trusting Dudley completely, or for that matter, allowing him to become as good a friend as Ron is. There's just too much water under the bridge for all the hard feelings to completely go away, but since Dudley is making an effort to change his attitude, Harry is, too. I really had fun writing this chapter. I loved Mrs. Figg in OotP and wanted her to have more press time, so she got it here. I also enjoyed writing it because there really are so many parallels in the two worlds. Both contain bullies and those who take pleasure from another's discomfort, both contain people who are trying to change or not change as the case may be. Chapter 4 is in the beta process and hopefully will be up sometime in October. Thanks for reviewing. I look foward to your next comments.

Hmm...interesting developments with Dudley, especially his mention of the Dementor. JKR has mentioned that Dudley's encounter with the Dementor was what led to the beginning of his changing attitude in canon, so considering that you apparently had most of this story written before DH, you seem to be something of a seer! ;-)
I loved the thought of Mrs. Figg using a shopping full of tinned cat food as a weapon against Dudley's nasty friends. You Go! Mrs. Figg.

But I'm curious. Was it really only Harry's imagination that he heard someone in the park with him or is there a little mystery developing?

Author's Response: I'm really glad you liked this chapter. Even with all the rewrites it was a fun one to create, especially after JKR confirmed my hopes that the Dementor attack in Book 5 was what helped change Dudley's attitude for the better. That, and the fact that he's spending a good amount of time away from his parents and is learning to accept all sorts of people and not just the ones exactly like himself. Another part of OotP I have always liked was Mrs. Figg's involvement, so I gave her a little more press time in this chapter just because I loved her unique method of defending herself and Harry! Finally, as of this writing, poor Harry was sadly completely alone in the park that day and his imagination really was playing tricks on him. However, that does not mean to say that the idea has not been filed for future reference; due to questions from readers I actually did write scenes to answer their questions in New Year, New Hope and that could very well happen again with this story. Thank you for the idea and for writing such a detailed review.
