Yes, any parent will tell you that getting vomited on by your child is a a part of being a parent, I know I do!

A well constructed and wonderfully told story!

Author's Response: Thanks for your reviews! Yes, I wrote this bit from a little too personal of an experience. Glad you are enjoying it.

I think that the children will be in for a surprise when they return, but the cookies they ate do not. Oh no...you had to let James use Sirius' famous joke line. It really fits well here. I guess that the interaction works really well if the kids could do all that--could smell, taste…destroy Harry’s shirt. I was really wondering how the younger twins might sleep though. The thing that jumped out at me the most with this chapter was how you had the younger Harry and Ginny interacting with each other. It was perfect, from the awkward first steps to the heartwarming developments. Hmm…Arthur wouldn’t really lock him in the cellar would he? Eric B.

Author's Response: Hmmmm, I'm going to blame the brilliance of George for being able to construct a "full senses" interactive patented daydream Pensieve charm - can you say that five times fast? Having James getting sick on him is a memory I am sure the younger Harry is glad he won't be revisiting. Thanks! -Mel

You are so right about being thrown up on as a parent! Can't wait to find out about the bet! On to the next chapter!

Loved the Minx reference!

Nicely done. I enjoyed watching the younger Harry and Ginny cautiously, even a bit reluctantly work their way into "parental mode." Can't wait to see what the bet was and who wins!

Abraxan

Author's Response: Thanks! As you are now finished with the story, you can see that the bet was actually less important than the reason everyone went into the Pensieve in the first place. Glad you enjoyed it!

Very cute. I love the kids bullying Harry and Ginny into kissing and holding hands. I like their innocent expectation that their parents should be who they've known them to be. The vomit scene was adorable. I know exactly how Harry felt, many times over. When you love a child, things like that just don't matter. I can't say I enjoy moments like that, but the sweetness of knowing your child knows he/she can depend on you is worth it.

I am interested to see the motivation behind this trip into memory. Particularly Molly's angle.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review, Debbie. I purposely made the kids a little more innocent than they could have been - because it worked best for this story. There was a fine line between making them sweetly oblivious to the changes in their family and making them just look clueless - hopefully I pulled it off.

I think you will like the motivation for the trip into the Pensieve - and I don't think it will be what anyone expects. Enjoy! -Mel

Mel, I just LOVE this story. If you ask Andi what my favorite kinds of stories are, other than really fluffy H/G stories, it's stories about Harry being a dad. Or in some cases, a really great godfather to Teddy. So this is right up my alley!!

I love their conversation about how they already love the kids. Especially Harry's line, "Knowing that I’m going to love them someday, it makes me love them now. I mean, why wait?” Exactly, why wait? :)

I also love the part right after James says he doesn't feel good and the younger Harry and Ginny echo their older selves. That was a great touch.

And it really got me when the kids were being put to bed. Lily said 'love you' and James took Harry's hand. That might be my favorite part!

This is just too great Mel! Can't wait to see what happens when they go back.

Jen

Author's Response: Thanks so much Jen! I had never written Harry as a dad before, but if you've read Taking the Train, you know that for me too, I love the thought of Harry as a father and I love writing about how important family is to him. One of my favorite touching parts here was the younger Harry talking about how he could suddenly understand how his own dad felt, and the older Harry telling Ginny that he had thought the same thing, when the twins were born. And I'm happy you noticed the parallel discussion between the two couples with James started not feeling well - I like doing things like that.

And if you like lots of fluff, I have a one-shot almost finished that should be right up your alley - I just need to finish writing the final chapter of this first! Thanks! -Mel

Ha ha on the K-I-S-S-I-N-G song--must be a girl thing. My girl loves watching hubby and I kiss while my boys go running and hiding their faces and yelling, "Eeeeeewwwwww! Are they done yet?"

As for throwing up on a parent--(from personal experience) don't ever lift a baby up over your head. My oldest threw up all down my shirt and into my bra when he was 7 months old. I had just lifted him up over my head to play with him. I NEVER did that again!

Author's Response: Hee hee - I learned that same lesson giving my oldest (who was a huge spitter -upper anyway) an "airplane" ride where I lay on my back on the floor and she "flew" on my feet, which were up in the air. Yuck.

Wonderful chapter, Mel. And, strangely, I'm glad you didn't have young Harry and Ginny immediately starting a relationship, but seemingly content to wait a bit. After all, Harry would be forcing what he's just now starting to feel.

I agree with the parental-vomiting thing in the notes. It's most definitely when you know you've 'arrived' as a parent.

I'm excited for the wrap up. ;) Andi

Author's Response: Andi - I don't know if you've ever seen the movie Parenthood, but there is a great kid throwing - up scene at the beginning that I was thinking of when I wrote this - it's just one of those things I think you don't get until you have kids! Yep, no kissing for Harry and Ginny here. In contrast to a lot of time travel stories, the irony here is that teenage Harry and Ginny cannot do anything to change their future, although they both realize that they would have wanted to. I didn't exactly plan it that way, but as you know, my characters often have minds of their own - I just let them go where they want! Thanks! -Mel

Okay, I still had a silly smile on my face the reading this the second time around! Several things I really really love about this story: first, I love how young Harry calls James by name and then suddenly realizes he doesn't know Lily's name. I love how Ginny is able to guess what her name is and then looks at Harry triumphantly! Hahahahahaha. That was just awesome.

I love the lines: “You know,” said Lily, “the baby in your tummy that’s coming after Christmas.” She smiled sweetly at Ginny. “So James and I can have another brother or sister.”

“Maybe it’s another set of twins!” crowed George.

“Maybe even triplets!” said Fred. “I don’t know, Ginny, you do seem to have been putting on a bit of weight, lately.”

“Sod off,” said Harry. “She looks fine.” As Fred and George started making wolf whistles, Harry turned bright red. Without another word, he scooped James onto his back and carried him outside. Harry is just wonderful!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love that he comes to her defense without even thinking about what he just said!!!

I love Lily picking up on the fact that Ginny isn't sitting by Harry and presses her to move--I was REALLY hoping they would have a quick snog--but ah, well, guess we can't always have everything we want.

I was cracking up at Lily's comment of not being Sirius--I think I spit out my Diet Pepsi along with Sirius my first read through!!!

I was floored by Harry's cheeky comment about being a dad and being taught too well by Sirius about the facts of life! No wonder Ginny had a weak smile! I was surprised she didn't go squealing all the way out of the room! I almost did!

I also loved Ginny's comment about building a pensieve herself and bringing their kids back from the future earlier if her 10-year old self would've known that that's what it would take to get Harry to hold her hand. And, Harry holding her two fingers initially like they wear two burning twigs--I'm still wiping away the tears!

I love Harry's gobsmacked expression and present-day Ginny realizing that Harry just spotted her as a girl. And then the following commentary from Harry asking what Ginny saw in him and her saying, "Nothing . . . ." That was priceless. So in character for those two!!!

I love that the teenage Harry and Ginny already loved their kids and that they were so good with them.

Okay, I've never in my whole life written such a long review (Pooky must be rubbing off on me!)--but I have to say that this is one of my all time favorite fics. There really wasn't anything that I didn't like about it. I thought that the few lines you added really cleared up the plot for me. I was surprised in the end that the teenage Harry and Ginny seemed to know that they were a memory. But, I guess I should've expected that since Ginny talked about building a pensieve! I was banking on the bet being who kisses who first--but guess I was wrong there! Now, I can't wait till you tie up the loose ends!

Author's Response: Hee hee Iva - I think this is the longest review I have ever gotten! Thanks! I love most of the lines you mentioned too - and my kids love singing the "mommy and daddy sitting in a tree" song to us and yelling at us to kiss - so that part was a favorite of mine. Teenage Harry and Ginny learn in chapter two that they are most likely just memories - no one know exactly how the modified Pensieve works but I needed them to realize they unfortunately weren't going to be able to change the future in this case, even though they might have wanted to. Cute idea on the bet - that did not occur to me! The bet is actually not the important part of the next chapter - the reason for going into the Pensieve at all is what the focus will be - hope you like it! - Mel

Oh well done that was a very good story, I am looking forward to finding out what the original bet was.

Author's Response: Thanks for the review! Actually, the original bet is not as important to the plot as the reason Harry and Ginny, Molly and the twins all went into the Pensieve in the first place. The bet was kind of an afterthought - but all will become clear soon. . .

EXCELLENT, Mel! This is just so sweet. It makes me want to write my own challenge piece... but not... am at the critical point of Backward With Purpose.... must keep plodding onward...

You've really got a talent with writing about small children. Lily and James were very vivid. It made me want a Lily and James of my own. Maybe I'll have twins next pregnancy... ;)

Anyway, thank you for sharing this with us. I really loved it! And I can't wait for the "wrap it all up" chapter (not to mention the *ahem* other piece you may be working on in the near future). I hope you win it, Mel!

Author's Response: I assure you, Ella, I am not trying to cut down on the challenge competition when I tell you that you have to keep working on BWP! I need my fix! Thanks for the review. I really love Lily and James too - it surprised me a bit that I felt more in touch with James, as I have girls, and usually like them better. But he is just adorable, in my mind. My, ahem, other piece is in the works. For a moment, I thought of something involving time travel characters, but it got kind of . . . icky. Not to mention illegal in most states. (Nothing like in BWP, I assure you). Thanks!! - Mel
