I love how James would rather be home than out at the pub, it reminds me of my husband, who has to be forced out the door and will only stay out any great length of time for D&D. Poor Lily is breaking my heart, thank Goodness she has Sera, her parents, and supportive school staff. I once had the misfortune to be the only girl on several academic teams. While I was not pretty like Lily, the guys still thought it was funny to make disgusting and judgemental comments about my appearance and about girls in general when I was around, and since it was the early 2000's the attitude of the teachers and competition chaperones was "boys will be boys" and "just ignore it". I can only imagine how much worse it is for Lily, it was bad enough for me that even though I loved academic competitions, not having to put up with the guys from the teams was very much in the "pro" column when I was deciding whether or not to skip my senior year (I did). I hope life gets easier for you and look forward to your next chapter. Can't someone help Lily learn to control her powers?
