Oh, poor Harry. My heart is broken. MNF

Author's Response: This chapter was one of my favorites to write thus far. I'm a sucker for pain and angst lol Thank you!

Brilliant chapter!!! This is so upsetting, so powerful, and truly manages to highlight the trauma of abuse in a way I have never read before on this site.

What a magnificent chapter but also so sad for Harry! Mrs. G was right! Good to see I was right about Ginny getting to them first! Surprised there weren't hexes all around! Hate that Harry took it so badly he ran and now, with that wicked cliffy at the end, I have worry until the next chapter about what happens to him! Dang Moldyshorts! :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Author's Response: Thank you! I'll tell you, it was a very close thing on the hexing. I think Ginny would've snapped first if Harry hadn't lashed out when he did. The next chapter will include copious amounts of angst, but that's all I'm going to say about it ;) Thanks!

Wow! That was an intense chapter. I could feel the tension building, and I'm not surprised Harry broke. I felt ganged up on as I was reading, I can only imagine how he felt. And of course, he ran, as he's always done. My heart is aching for him. I'm not exactly sure the Obscurus idea fits, however. Harry didn't know he was a wizard until he was ten, so he wasn't trying to suppress his magic, he didn't know it was even there.

I'm really worried about Hermione's parents. I don't think exposing this to everyone will help Harry at all, in fact, I think it'll do more harm than good. I'm eager to see how you handle it. We know from canon that Fred's left buttock will never be the same after Arthur caught him trying to put an Unbreakable Vow on Ron, so Wizarding law isn't that strict as Hermione tried to make it seem. I'm SO beyond curious to see where this goes.

Well done on the excellent build up you created throughout this wonderful chapter.

Author's Response: Rereading this chapter when I was doing edits made me feel the same way, too! I think that means I nailed it haha. You're right, the Obscurus idea doesn't fit. Rowling said that Harry's saving grace was NOT knowing he was a wizard, which meant he couldn't feel ashamed of his magic and suppress it like Credence did in FB and, most likely, Ariana from the descriptions given in DH. Sirius hit the roof and is basically catastrophizing things (something I'm unfortunately very good at doing). That is the absolute worst thing that could have happened in his mind, so that's where he went with it. Once Sirius calms down, he'll have a more level-headed discussion with Harry about the fact that Obscurials are very uncommon as well as the specific criteria needed to create them. As for Hermione's parents, I'm not confident that getting the Muggle authorities involved is a good idea. Hermione would rather the Order take care of the matter quietly than risk anyone in the Wizarding world putting things together with Harry and the Dursleys. Newspapers don't usually report the names of children in abuse cases without permission if I recall correctly, but all it takes is one person knowing who the Dursleys are to create problems for Harry. There's also the fact that the Order is not yet prepared to deal with the end of the protection when Harry turns seventeen, so having it abruptly ended with jail time would be an issue. It's so complicated already that Hermione isn't willing to have her parents add to that. You know, I sometimes mourn Fred's left buttock lol. Child protection laws are definitely strict, but they also rely on people reporting suspected abuse. I don't see the Weasleys as the type of people who spank for every wrongdoing (that's more my husband's thing despite my best efforts to convince him otherwise), but as a consequence for very serious offenses, like Fred's Unbreakable Vow attempt. Should Ron bring up that story, Harry's going to immediately call him out on the whole "never laid a hand on us" and "not even when we broke the rules" things he and Ginny told him in this chapter, which will only lead to further discussion of what really constitutes abuse and what doesn't. My goal is for Harry to come to understand appropriate consequences for behavior and really heal from the trauma of his childhood. Thank you so much!

Ah harry you have that move down for sure, when in trouble run....as for ginny and Sirius and Ron well I hope they are alright but Dudley and petunia I hope they get what’s coming to them....kutgw

Author's Response: Yep, running away works great ;) Ginny, Sirius, and Ron are okay, but definitely shaken. As for the Dursleys... you'll have to wait and see! Thank you!

I had a feeling he would bolt sooner or later...I feel like this was very accurate to how the truth would burst out was this real life and you composed the situation perfectly. I also really like that you kept the abuse to what it was in the books because I feel like whenever fanfiction authors add a lot of different physical abuse on to it it seems as if they don't think the abuse in the books was bad enough, which it is. I really like discovering what could have happened had harry's abuse been exposed and not just suspected like in the books. It'll be interesting to see how the Dursley's will be dealt with, there are a lot of things to be taken into consideration but I agree with Jean that they shouldn't get away with it because of the effect it would have on the wizarding world. I think the muggle authorities might be a good idea because the wizarding world is so ignorant when it comes to the muggle world that they probably wouldn't even notice that Harry's relatives are accused of child abuse by the muggle authorities. It will also be interesting to see how the rest of the time harry will stay at the dursleys will be dealt with, at the very least I think they will have someone stay with him there 24/7. One thing I never understood about the blood wards was how they where still stable after Voldemort return, he used harry's blood to renew his body, shouldn't the blood wards at privet drive be ineffective because of that? I also feel like a Fidelius charm with an unbreakable vow on the secret keeper should offer almost as much protection as the blood wards. I always greatly disliked that harry returned to privet drive year after year
Another thing that intrigues me is how sirius, Ron and ginny will treat him now that the big secret has been revealed. Pity and tip-toeing around him will just make him angry and set him off again so I hope he will be treated with sympathy and honesty instead
I'm also interested to see how the rest of the weasleys will react to his abuse once word gets out and how harry will (or won't) cope with people speaking to each other about his abuse. Thank you for this great chapter and I'm already looking forward to the next!

Author's Response: Thank you! I have always felt that Harry suffered more emotional abuse and neglect than he did physical abuse, because he maintains a certain boundary with Vernon, but is not prone to flinching at the slightest provocation, which would easily be the case had the physical abuse been more frequent. I do enjoy reading stories where the physical abuse occurs more often, but I really wanted to try and stick to canon as much as possible, and the reality seems to be that Vernon was more of one to threaten pain than actually inflict it. Jean and Hermione will be having another talk after Hermione finds out what happened, but I am still undecided as to the result of that conversation. Hermione really doesn't want her parents involved in any way, and she's still worried about what would happen if the wrong people put two and two together. At this point, I don't see her allowing her parents to report the Dursleys, possibly going so far as to involve the Order in modifying her parents memories. The blood wards are a confusing topic in a way, though Voldemort said in GoF during his speech to his Death Eaters: "Dumbledore invoked an ancient magic, to ensure the boy's protection as long as he is in his relation's care. Not even I can touch him there." I think the magic used in the blood wards is very specific to the relationship between Harry and Petunia, and a few drops of his blood wasn't enough to circumvent that ancient magic. In any case, I'm not messing with that. It's enough for me that Harry continuing to stay there for long each each summer allows the magic to continue working. Everyone is going to have to find a new balance in what they suspected before versus what they know now. It isn't going to be easy, I can promise you that!
