Ginny wandered towards the Black Lake and the tree where her and Harry had spent so many blissful afternoons a lifetime ago. Had it really only been a year since those days? She didn’t see anyone else outside even if the weather was the most beautiful it had been in forever. Everyone else had stayed inside with their loved ones, of course they had, but Ginny couldn’t deal with the grief of her whole family anymore. She needed to get out, she needed to breathe. The bright sunlight seemed to mock her, to taunt her with its beauty, given the darkness she felt inside. How can Fred be gone? Not that she hadn’t been terrified of losing a sibling - or even more - but losing one of the twins and leaving the other behind seemed impossible to her, the world couldn’t be that cruel, could it?
When she found herself facing the infamous tree, Ginny collapsed to the ground and didn’t even readjust herself more comfortably. Tears were threatening to fall, and yet she still faught them even though there was nobody to see her lose it. The walls she’d built after her first year were very strong and stubborn and refused to crumble, even if she was in need of a good cry.
Ginny’s thoughts betrayed her, bringing her back to the day before when she saw the body of the love of her life appearing lifeless in Hagrid’s strong arms. Her heart had been obliterated at that moment, utterly destroyed in millions of tiny pieces, irreparable. She had felt the desire to keep on living completely leave her body and had ran towards a seemingly unbeatable threat, Bellatrix Lestrange, hoping desperately for it to be quick and so she could be reunited with Harry. Then the impossible happened.
First Hermione and Luna joined her, and when the green light missed her by inches - Ginny swearing under her breath - she felt herself being pushed aside and then saw her mum raging in a fury at Bellatrix and defeating her. - If that wasn’t enough, she saw Harry suddenly up on his feet, alive, and running at Voldemort, taunting him.
Ginny had sensed something awakening inside her that she’d thought forever gone. A deep fire burned and she was suddenly very much alive and fighting. She heard Harry telling Riddle to try for remorse, and how Snape had never been truly on his side after all. After what felt like forever, she saw the body of the man with the remaining part of the soul that had tortured her for so long fall down lifeless on the ground, and the man that she loved so deeply standing strong, facing the corpse with a triumphant look in his eyes. She knew it was all finally over.
Totally lost in her thoughts, Ginny didn’t see the person striding towards her and was thus surprised when she felt a hand gently caressing her left cheek.
“I’ve been looking all over for you since I woke up. You are a hard woman to find when you put your mind to it.” She knew this soft, wry voice better than any other.
Ginny looked up, her mind not processing the touch or the words. Something was stirring in the most profound depths of her body, what her senses were telling her couldn’t be real, after this interminable year and all its horrors, her sufferings and her losts, he couldn’t be here, right next to her, having been looking for her and touching her when if what she believed happened the day before really happened, he would have so much to do, so many people to see, wanting to reach her would not be a priority for him. She loved him more than life itself, but she had never had the time to tell him that, and surely he wouldn’t love her back as much as she did, or she’d know, wouldn’t she?
She let herself feel his fingers against her skin. "They felt like a dream after the previous day's horror, like something miraculous.".
Looking anxious, Harry withdrew his hand. “Sorry, I guess I’m not allowed to do that anymore”, he said in a small voice. He’d turned red. “I got carried away when I saw you. I was missing you like crazy and you looked all sad and I…”
“Don’t stop”, Ginny pleaded. “Unless you don’t like me anymore of course, we were apart for a very long time and I can’t blame you for not thinking of your silly little school romance while you were away.”
Harry took a long breath, looking deeply confused. He sat in front of her and took her face into his hands, his eyes turning darker and intense. “What do you mean “silly little school romance”? Don’t you know how I feel about you? Don’t you know that you are everything to me, Gin? I...I love you, I thought you knew that?”
Ginny’s heart seemed to stop. Her muscles froze.. She must be dreaming, could it possibly be real that her wildest hopes were coming true at the same moment when her entire existence seemed to be vanishing? Finally able to swallow, she gulped and looked into the green eyes that always made her swoon.
She had to fight to get the words out of her mouth. “You..love me?” she whispered. . If Harry hadn’t been sitting so close, he wouldn’t have been able to hear her. The words awoke something inside of her, making her feel more alive than she had felt in over a year, since the last time she’d been here with him. She tentatively drew away from his hands. “Maybe you thought you did a lifetime ago, Harry, but I’m not the same girl I was when we last sat here last year. I’m a shell of who I used to be. I feel so lost, my brother is gone, I haven’t played Quidditch in ages, as close as 12 hours ago I believed everything to be gone forever, lost to Voldemort. Every sense of who I used to be seems unreachable. You don’t love that person, Harry. You cared for a strong girl who stood against everything head on and was full of life. I’m a mess, Harry, I’m not that girl anymore.”
Harry’s eyes teared up. He cupped her face again and this time Ginny couldn’t force herself to pull away. It felt too good.
“It’s not how you behave or how you feel that I care about,’ said Harry. ‘It’s who you are deep down. I’m desperately in love with your soul, Ginny, I need you to know this. I’m not going anywhere. This is it for me. It might be surprising to see me with a solid idea of what I want and going after it, but what I went through last night in the forest changed me. I had everything stripped out of me and I thought I was a dead man, and all I could see was you. Kissing you, being with you. We’ll have more time to talk in detail about what happened, but you need to know that the reason I’m standing before you right now it’s because I want you in my future. I can’t see it without you.. If you tell me that you don’t want me anymore, I will find a way to go on, but I’d rather not. I’ve never been so sure of anything in my life. I don’t care about what’s going to happen next, where I’m gonna be, what I’m gonna do, I only know that I want you with me. We can work out the rest together, but please believe me when I tell you that I need you, Gin, you and nothing else. If you feel broken, we can work together to fix it. I’m certainly not whole myself at the moment, but the central piece is you, that is all I can see. I love you Ginevra Weasley, more than life itself. Please be mine.”
Ginny’s heart jumped. She felt an incredible fire burn inside of her and couldn’t stop herself from leaning in and kissing Harry. It felt completely crazy and unreal to her, but if Harry was saying that he wanted her, there was no other place in the world that she wished to be. When their lips met, everything finally made sense, like nothing else had in a very long time. She was right where she had to be, nothing could take her away from this now. She felt like she finally belonged and that things would eventually be alright. She clung to him with all her remaining strength, one hand holding his neck and the other lost in his hair, messing it more than it already was. Harry returned her kiss just as passionately, moving one hand to her lower back, pulling her even close, and sliding the other one into her hair, messing it up just like she was messing his.,
Ginny parted her lips and moaned, desperately wanting more of him, no, needing more. He slid tongue into her mouth, meeting hers. She felt so much warmer. All her senses were full of Harry; he filled her up and she only wanted more of him. If what she sensed from Harry’s body, entangled with her own, was any indication, he was in the same kind of frenzy. Someone passing by would hardly tell where one of them started and the other finished, and yet it still wasn’t enough for Ginny. She wanted to disappear into Harry’s essence and become one with him.
Harry stopped caressing hers. Ginny groaned at the loss. Harry took her hands and laughed.“Patience, grasshopper.”. Harry tugged, pulling them both up. Just as she felt solid on her feet, she was pushed against the tree trunk and Harry was all over her again. She sighed and reclaimed his lips. She felt so hot she couldn’t think straight. One of her hands went to his bum and squeezed it, while the other went to his face, gently caressing him before going to his glasses that were starting to press against her uncomfortably. “These need to come off,” she gasped, before joining herself to him again. She didn’t want to lose a single second of him.
After a long snogging session where time ceased to exist, they slowly stepped apart, not separating completely, needing to stay connected, their foreheads leaning together and their hands joined. They were both completely out of breath but feeling both more alive than they could each remember being.
