It’s something unpredictable
But in the end is right
I hope you had the time of your life

Billie-Joe Armstrong, Green Day

A/N So, here it is. The long awaited epilogue to 2000 Miles. I’m sorry it’s taken so long but I’ve just been so busy with exams and leaving school. To all of you who believed in this story enough to wait for this final chapter, I salute you. If it weren’t for you I don’t think any fanfiction author would have the determination to follow through any story. Besides, I’ve had a hard time coming up with anything good enough to become the epilogue of this story. I had a really good idea going, but then I remembered my promise not to kill anybody. Anyway, enough babble from me and on with the story.

Epilogue: Little Monster

*+*+*+*

The morning of the first of February dawned cool and clear. It was almost exactly seven years since the last hostages of the second war had returned home and as the sun rose on another winter morning Harry and Ginny Potter, the heroes of the second war, were awoken by a small child leaping onto their bed.

“Cole!” Ginny exclaimed as her two-year-old son landed heavily on her knees. “You could have hurt yourself.”

“You could hurt baby too,” said Harry, rolling the little boy into his arms.

Cole reached under the covers and gingerly patted his mother’s rounded belly. Ginny noticed the tell-tale signs of tears in his eyes.

“Baby’s alright, sweetie,” she said, ruffling the little boy’s jet-black hair. “It’s time to get your breakfast.”

She made to get up, but Harry stopped her.

“You stay here,” he said. “I’ll sort out breakfast. You look exhausted.”

He climbed out of bed with his son in his arms and kissed his wife’s cheek.

“Thanks, Harry,” she said. “This pregnancy is really taking it out of me. But don’t worry, in a couple of weeks we’ll have a new little baby to look after.”

Harry grinned.

“Tell you what,” he said. “I’ll go downstairs and floo your mum and tell her to come and get you. I’ll take Cole out for the day and you head over to the Burrow and put your feet up. Have a good gossip and let Molly take care of you, ok?”

He shifted Cole into his left arm and brushed her face with his fingers.

“Ok,” she said and smiled.

Hal f an hour later, Harry and Cole set out from the house. Cole was wearing a full body suit, which was filled with padding to keep him warm, and he wore a blue woolly hat on his head which kept slipping down over his eyes.

“So,” said Harry, to the little boy in his arms. “What do you want to do today?”

“Gonley,” said Cole.

“You want to go to Diagon Alley?” asked Harry.

Cole nodded.

“Ok,” said Harry.

Harry pulled a glove from his pocket, muttered ‘Portus’ and he and Cole landed moments later in the back room of Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes.

“Where’d you come from?” one of the twins asked peering around the door to see what the crash was.

“Portkey,” said Harry, entering the main shop. “Great thing about being me. I can create an unauthorised portkey whenever I like and no one cares.”

“Not fair,” said the other twin. “You can break as many laws as you want, while me and Fred spend hours every month filling out forms to legalise half our products.”

“Bloody favouritism,” grumbled Fred.

“Hey,” said Harry. “No swearing in front of my son.”

“Sorry,” said Fred. “How is my favourite nephew anyway? Old enough for us to corrupt yet?”

“No,” said Harry. “And who said you’ll be doing the corrupting? He probably won’t need your help. He is the grandson of a Marauder after all.”

“Yeah,” said George. “But you wait. Our products will be the key to his success.”

Harry grinned.

“You’re probably right,” he said.

“Where’s Ginny?” asked Fred.

“At the Burrow,” said Harry. “I’ve asked your mum to look after her today. She’s getting pretty big.”

Fred nodded.

“Baby’s due soon isn’t it?” George asked.

“Two weeks,” said Harry.

“Nervous,” asked Fred with a small glint in his eye.

“Not really,” said Harry. “I’ve been through it all once before.”

Cole squirmed in his father’s arms.

“Anyway,” he said. “We’re going to get going. It was good to see you.”

He opened the outside door.

“See you, Harry,” said Fred.

“Bye Cole,” said George.

Cole stuck his arm out and waved as he and Harry left the shop. Once outside, Harry put Cole on the floor and took his hand.

“Do you want to walk for a bit?” Harry asked.

Cole nodded and they set off down the narrow winding street ignoring the curious glances from passers-by. After walking for about ten minutes, harry spotted a familiar bushy head inside Flourish and Blotts. Harry led Cole into the shop and greeted Hermione.

“Hello, Harry,” she said with a smile. “Hello Cole.”

“Lo, Anermyni,” said Cole, without prompting.

Hermione smiled.

“What’re you looking for?” Harry asked.

“Well,” said Hermione. “Apparently there’s a new book out which I wanted to read.”

“What’s it about?” asked Harry.

“You,” said Hermione.

“Figures,” said Harry, slightly bitterly. “Do you think they’ll have come up with something new to say?”

“Unlikely,” said Hermione. “I take it you’re getting Cole out of Ginny’s way for a few hours.”

“Something like that,” said Harry. “You want to go for lunch at the Leaky Cauldron?”

“Why not?” said Hermione. “I am getting quite hungry. You buying?” she added with a cheeky grin.

“Of course,” Harry said.

“Mr Potter, Mr Potter.”

Harry bit back the curse he was about to utter. He turned around to face the gaggle of reporters which was following him down the street. He lifted Cole into his arms and glared at the journalists.

“Can I help you?” he asked.

“We’d like to ask you a few questions,” said one of them.

Harry groaned.

“What would you say to rumours that your marriage is on the rocks?” a woman asked.

“That’s rubbish,” said Harry. “Ginny and I are perfectly happy.”

“So, how do you explain her leaving your house this morning with a bag?” another woman asked.

“She was going to her mother’s for the day,” said Harry. “The bag contained some maternity clothes that her sister-in-law leant her which she no longer fits into.”

“I see,” said a male reporter. “We saw you having lunch with Mrs Hermione Weasley earlier. Is it true that the two of you are having an affair?”

Harry laughed.

“That’s ridiculous,” he said. “I’ve known Hermione since I was eleven years old and there is no, and never was, any romantic feelings between us. Hermione is married to my brother-in-law and is the closest thing I have to a sister. I was simply eating lunch with my son and an old friend.”

“What about rumours that you and your wife had an argument over the birth of your second child?” asked another male reporter.

“There was never any argument,” Harry replied.

He sighed loudly.

“Look,” he continued. “Ginny is thirty-eight weeks pregnant. She is feeling tired at the moment because this little monster keeps her on her feet for most of the day. She’s gone to her mother’s to put her feet up while I’ve brought Cole out for the day to work off some of his excess energy. All three of us are very excited about the coming of the newest member of the family.”

“Baby,” interrupted Cole.

“Yes,” said Harry. “And I wish you’d stop speculating about any so-called marital problems that we are alleged to have.”

Harry turned and walked briskly away, leaving the group of reporters looking slightly stunned.

Ha rry tore up a slice of bread and handed the smaller pieces to Cole.

“Now throw them into the water,” he said, demonstrating.

The small pieces of white bread landed in the water and three ducks immediately seized them. Cole squashed the bread in his small hand then threw it as hard as he could into the water.

“That’s it,” said Harry with a smile.

Cole laughed delightedly as the mallards quickly ate what he had thrown to them. Harry gave him some more bread which Cole threw once again and watched with fascination as the ducks easily finished the food out of the water.

“You’re really good at this,” said Harry. “Let’s…”

He broke off when he felt the two-way mirror grow warm in his pocket. He whipped it out and held it up in front of his face.

“Hi Molly,” he said brightly.

“Harry,” said Molly, hurriedly. “You need to get to St. Mungo’s as soon as you can.”

“Why?” asked Harry, looking worried. “Has something happened? Is Ginny ok? The baby…?”

“Her water broke,” said Molly. “She’s not started contractions yet but it’s only a matter of time.”

“Ok,” said Harry. “Tell her that we’re on our way.”

Molly disappeared from the mirror and Harry pulled a packet of tissues from his trouser pocket.

“Portus,” he said quickly.

He lifted Cole up.

“Ducks, Dada,” the little boy said, his eyes welling up.

“I’m sorry,” Harry said, kissing his son’s pink-tinged cheek. “We have to go to the hospital. Baby’s coming.”

Cole’s face suddenly brightened, and he allowed Harry to place his hand on the portkey. Within seconds, Harry and Cole were at St. Mungo’s where a healer was waiting to take them to Ginny’s room.

Harry passed Cole to Molly and rushed into the room where Ginny was waiting for him.

“Did you have a good day?” she asked.

“It just got better,” Harry said with a smile.

Four hours later, Harry carried a sleepy Cole to his mother’s hospital bed. He sat him down and placed the new baby gently in the toddler’s arms.

“Cole,” said Ginny, kissing his messy black hair. “This is your little sister Abigail.”

“Abi,” whispered Cole tentatively touching the baby’s head.

Harry reached over Cole’s head and kissed Ginny.

“I love you,” he said.

Ginny smiled, tiredly.

“I love you too,” she said.

A/N That’s it. The end. All over. I’m amazed that I’ve managed to finish it. But here it is, and before HBP as well. I am so excited about that as I’m sure you all are. I can’t believe it’s so close.

On a sadder note, not that this has any relevance to the story, but I just want to remember the victims of the terrorist attack in London today which killed more than 33 people. The attacks were targeted at the public transport system which included one bus and three tube trains. Seven sites in total were affected including King’s Cross station where 21 people were killed.
