Cat's In The Cradle
disclaimer: I only own Landon and Lannie, all the other are JK Rowling's, the song is Cat's In The Cradle by Harry Chapin and i dont own that either
---My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talkin' 'fore I knew it, and as he grew
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, Dad"
"You know I'm gonna be like you"---
"Harry," said Ginny with a smile. "This is our son, Landon." Harry grinned and took his son from Ginny. "He's beautiful, gets it from his mother," Harry said looking lovingly at the baby. He glanced at his watched and sighed. He kissed Landon's head and handed him back to Ginny. "Sorry, Gin, I have to run home and pay the bills, then I have to catch the plane." Harry kissed Ginny softly then kissed the baby's head once more. Harry quickly walked out. Ginny sighed and looked at Landon. "He loves you baby, he's just a busy man." She planted a small soft kiss on his head and rocked him to sleep.
"Daddy!" 1 year old Landon tried to walk toward him but took two little steps and fell on his behind. "Hey buddy! When did you learn that?" Harry picked up Landon and kissed him. "A week ago." Ginny appeared in the door way. "A week? And I didn't know?" Harry felt guilty and it shown on his face. "You didn't call," said Ginny strolling over to Harry and kissing him.
5 year old Landon looked from the now stainless carpet, where Harry got the spot, where he'd spilt juice out, to Harry and grinned. "I'm gonna be like you, Dad!" Harry smiled. "You know I'm gonna be like you!" Landon hugged Harry around the middle and ran outside to play.

"When you comin' home, Dad?"
"I don't know when, but we'll get together then"
"You know we'll have a good time then"---
---My son turned ten just the other day
He said, "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on let's play"
"Can you teach me to throw?"
I said, "Not today, I got a lot to do"
He said, "That's ok"
And he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah"
"You know I'm gonna be like him"---
Landon gasped. It was his 10th birthday and Harry and Ginny got him a set of Quidditch balls for his birthday, so he could play on his broom. "Wow! Thanks! Hey, Dad can you teach me to play?" Landon looked up at Harry, anticipation in his eyes. Harry glanced at his watch. "Not today, I got a lot to do still." Landon didn't stop smiling, in fact his smile became bigger. He walked over to Ron to show him his new Quidditch set. "I'm gonna be just like him!" Ron chuckled and sat on the floor with Landon to take a look. "You know im gonna be like him!" Landon grinned at Ron as they walked outside so Ron could teach him.

---Well, he came home from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son, I'm proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head and then said with a smile
"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys"
"See you later, can I have them please?"---
17 year old Landon came home from his last year at Hogwarts. He was a man now. Harry grinned as Landon came throught the door. Pride showed in every crease on Harry's face. Landon graduated with top grades of his year. "I'm proud of you Landon, sit for a while, we'll talk." Landon shook his head smiling. "Nah, hey, listen, I really gotta head off to Lannie's I told her I'd go, and I need the car," said Landon hold his hand out. Landon wanted to go to his girlfriends house the second he got home, Harry hid his disapointment and handed Landon the keys. "Thanks Dad! See ya later!" Landon walked out the front door. "He's a man now, Harry, he doesn't want to always sit with, he's no longer a boy," said Ginny resuming her spot on Harry's lap.

---I've long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind"
He said, "I'd love to, Dad, if I can find the time"
"You see my new job's a hassle and kids have the flu"
"But it's sure nice talking to you, Dad"
"It's been sure nice talking to you"---
"Hello?"
"Hey Landon"
"Oh! Hey Dad, what's up?'
"Well, I was thinking we could get together? You can bring along Lannie and the kids, your mother would like to see them."
"Ah! Dad! Wrong time! I'd really like to, but Nick and Witnie have the flu, Mandy's showing symptoms of it, and you know how it is at the Ministry, always busy, I have to work over time, hey, I'll give you a call when I got time to see you, ok?"
Harry's heart sunk in dispointment. "Sure, that would be great."
"It's been nice talkin', Dad, but I gotta run, Witnie calls." Landon said with a laugh and they said their goodbyes and hung up.
---And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me
My boy was just like me---
Harry hung up the phone and it hit him. Landon, busy with a job and a family, no spare time to see his own father. Harry hung his head in shame. That had been Harry. Only Harry was busy with a job, and getting money to support his family, not spend time with them. It also occured to him how much he'd missed out on Landon growing up. It was Ron, not he, who had taught Landon how to play Quidditch, because Harry didn't want to cancel a meeting. Landon really was like Harry, and Harry's one wish for Landon was that he would treat his children better than he had. That Landon would set aside time to be with them, as he, Harry, had not done.
