I am a Christian, wife, mom, freelance writer and preschool teacher living in the Southern US. For a very long time I avoided Harry Potter because my kids were very young, my church disapproved of it, and I really didn't know a thing about it (much like my church). My husband finally talked me into watching the first movie with him in 2006. We loved it so much that we went out the next day and bought the first three movies (everything that had been released to that date). I began reading the next week, tearing my way through novel after novel until I'd read the first six and had nothing left to do but wait for seven.

Of course, I read the series over again, both to myself and aloud to my children. I started haunting sites like Mugglenet, where I finally, in absolute desperation to fill my Harry Potter void, turned to fan art and fan fiction. I was very lucky that the first fic I read, After the Die is Cast, by Mudblood428, was an exceptionally good one and remains on my list of favorites today. At first, I was a bit embarrassed that I loved a children's book series so much that I'd started reading fan fiction; then, I gave it up and started scouring fanfic sites looking for anything that ended happily and had canon pairings.

I believe JKR's series is a modern classic. She created a fantastic world that mirrors our own and allows us to see ourselves in a new way. Her characters have made their way so deeply into my heart that they're real to me. Her messages: to choose what is right, to be brave and loyal, to love and sacrifice are timeless. The end of her hero's journey is a strong reminder of Christ's sacrifice for mankind. It parallels His walk to the cross, Aslan's walk to the Stone Table, Frodo's journey to Mordor and our daily battle to carry our own crosses and choose what is right over what is easy.

I highly recommend all authors and fics listed in my favorites. I do suggest strongly that you watch the ratings on all stories you read. Some of the stories I have listed in my favorites or in the best of best list below are meant for mature readers. I personally do not enjoy excessively violent or sexually explicit material, but I will read around some scenes to enjoy a particularly good fic. Please keep that in mind. If a story is rated R, it means it.
